In a letter sent to the class of 2020, Dean of Students John (Jay) Ellison said one of the defining characteristics of the school was its unwavering commitment to freedom of inquiry and expression. (...)

“Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so-called “trigger warnings,” we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual “safe spaces” where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.”

Wow, I'm impressed. Hopefully other universities will follow this lead.

That's pretty rude.

Bit surprised that the dean had to write a letter about it. Are safe spaces the norm in the US?

Can my university please do this? Our President probably won't let us do this though, she recently tried to get the College Republicans suspended for inviting Milo to speak at our school, I'm not kidding.

We need more Universities like this one...hell I love the idea of free exchange of ideas without having to worry about a person's hurt feeling getting me suspended.

If you can't handle that pack your shit and leave.

Good call on their part. Glad that they respect free speech, and that they're committed to it too.

slowly becoming the norm. it seems every other week there's a news article talking about safe spaces and trigger warnings in a new university. there's probably at least 40 major US universities with it, probably a lot more

Good move, though I had no idea these "safe spaces" were a thing. My country has never had anything of the sort and I sincerely hope that never changes.

It became an especially big thing at a lot of top universities. Since top ones were known to be doing it, a lot of others have followed suit.
I call it bluntly: if the institution makes heavy use of trigger warnings and safe spaces, and refuses speakers with views not supported by the local whiners contingent, it's not a real university. The number of "real" universities has dropped quite a bit these past several years.

It's an irl circlejerk pretty much, where you can't disagree with what the majority say.

But cool I guess, hopefully this university will be the vanguard

While this is good and all, it's a bit of a sad reflection that such an announcement is necessary in the first place. It shouldn't be a given that universities have "safe spaces."

Don't quote me on this but pretty sure most universities don't have a designated "safe space". There are a few that take great pride, and announce to the world, that they have safe spaces, but I think most just avoid the subject because as already implied, it doesn't really need to be said that such spaces are not needed.

Although most universities have an on-campus police station as well as usually some type of counseling service, either of those could technically be "safe spaces", just not the kind with play-doh and cookies.

GOOD!

Hopefully other SANE universities follow suit and start acting like what they TRULY are...

This isn't some fucking adult day-care, it's an institution of higher learning where you are SUPPOSED to be intellectually challenged!

What is this bullshit? A university in America actually being sane? Seriously, people need to learn that life isn't fair and "safe spaces" isn't gonna make it any fairer than it already is. If anything, life will just throw more shit at you since you're now an easier target.

ayyyyy somebody finally got it right
seriously, if you're at school to learn, you don't need to be sheltered and protected like a little child. if what you're learning offends you personally because you're a fucking wimp, by all means, quit school and give your spot and your prepaid tuition to someone who is actually willing to attend and listen to what the professors have to say, instead of being offended by it and crying like a petulant baby in false protest.

I agree that the ideas of "safe spaces" and "trigger warnings" should be challenged and not uncritically accepted, but I also agree with an article that characterized the Dean's letter as shallow intellectual posturing. He doesn't actually analyze the ideas in a remotely serious way, nor is it clear why such an analysis would be part of a letter welcoming students; he's just being sanctimonious and signalling to fellow "true scholars" that Chicago vows to protect "freedom of inquiry and expression". A petty thing, in the end.

Comedy gold from reddit
Sure, I mean, who the hell cares if the lecture or material causes a student to have a severe anxiety attack that's potentially bad enough for them to be hospitalized. Who cares if the lecturer is presenting a theory that slavery wasn't so bad and that maybe it can help us out of today's economic crisis?

God these people don't need an education they need professional help.

Heh heh, I saw this in a video the other day. I was surprised and relieved. There's still some damn sense in this country. SJWs might not take over after all.
