Especially when considering just how good some of the stuff intended for an older demographic actually are. Will the age-ghetto be breached or are we forever doomed to an existence where most cartoons are made for teens?

If you can get teenagers to go to work and care for the adults and the adults to go to schools and be care free so they can watch anime then yes , anime will be more toward the adults

So, what kind of shows for older people are you really talking about?
Are you guys and girls really mature enough to watch, for example, Amaama to Inazuma?
Are you mature enough to see Kodomo no Jikan for the masterpiece it really is?
Have you already seen Koi Kaze?

Yeah sure, here are a few:

http://myanimelist.net/anime/28223/Death_Parade

http://myanimelist.net/anime/10087/Fate_Zero?q=fate%2Fzero

http://myanimelist.net/anime/12531/Sakamichi_no_Apollon?q=apollon

http://myanimelist.net/anime/16782/Kotonoha_no_Niwa?q=garden%20fo%20words

I was on the edge of my seat for all of those but I also loved every second of GitS so go in with an open mind.

@BlueBalls, idk if you're aware or not, but the anime you mentioned are also aimed at the teenagers too. And IT IS THE TEENAGERS who likes and buys them.

Fate/Zero is in my favorites, adored Death Parade (the only reason it's not in my favorites is because it doesn't have a second season), Garden of Words is just a very long music video. Haven't watch Sakamichi no Apollon because I believe it's animated using the rotoscoping technique, which I thoroughly dislike.

By Ghost in the Shell, I meant the S.A.C series, not the film. I'm not really a fan of the film either, but that's a different topic.

Not sure if I agree with that. Most anime are made with sales in mind, and teenagers aren't spending 6000 yen+ per volume...

Most anime may have teenage protagonists, but I don't know if that is the same as having a teenage demographic.

Why dont you stick with the Seinen demographic then. There are lots of mature anime under this demographic.

Also you will find it is alot easier to find Seinen manga than anime (just a tip for you).

Well I enjoy anime made for teenagers too, due to immature personality and stunted emotional growth, but I do wish there were more anime aimed at an older audience.

I actually used to like moe, ecchi, harem stuff, but I eventually grew tired of it and I realized how good seinen Anime are. Show like Darker than Black for instance, I wish there were more things like that and not "teenage-hyper-powerful-saves-the-world-sorrounded-by-tsundere-girls" stuff.

The majority of moeshit anime are aimed at young adults. There aren't too many people over the age of 30 who even watch anime so it's easiest to target the younger demographic and just not make it too unappealing to the older crowd. There are plenty of adults who watch anime made for children because they prefer it.

Because the anime is only half the manga with a shitty original ending that ruins Onizuka's character, has very little of the social commentary compared to the manga, censored and only the comedy is well adapted.

Instead of cute I would describe it cartoonesque, however the story is not cute at all, it's full of drama.

Maybe you won't like Princess tutu more than madoka but still if you like fairy tails then it is a strongly recommended show.
