Well... Ma Wenge, but the characters for Wen and Ge in his name are the same.

He's the first Chinese table tennis player to win a men's singles medal (bronze) at the Olympic in 1992, just 4 years before the publication of the manga.

Coincidence or inspiration?

Oh TT is table tennis.

Probably inspiration/reference, since his wikipedia also lists him to have been in a team with Kong Linghui. Then again, fairly common given/surname.

Yeah, I think so too, it's difficult to imagine it being a coincidence when it's the same Chinese characters.

Kong's a pretty common surname; idk what you mean by common given name though? Chinese names don't work like Japanese/Western names, so there's no real 'common' given name.

Albeit not as prevalent as western names, there are definitely some more common given names. In this case, Wenge is the cultural revolution, which is tied to said period in China, thus there are no doubt people named after it. Rather than common, perhaps I should have said it is a reasonable name, such that if two people with that showed up in the same room, it wouldn't be strange at all.

In this particular case though, it's likely it isn't a coincidence with both of those players being Olympic players, and Kong (Anime) becoming one as well.

Matsumoto spent a long while researching table tennis before he began work on Ping Pong, since it was his editors idea to do a sports manga after his previous work didn't sell well. Matsumoto has also said how the manga doesn't include much of his personal thoughts, so it's quite reasonable to assume his research and actual table tennis history, sporting events and players were major points of reference. :)
