Like I tried listening because this is suppose to be some really extreme stuff and actually
Lly I find it really dull and silly. Like I know this kind of music is meant to O be over the he top but you need to make it intimidating by adding a real sense of aggression and malice into the music. It just comes off as ugly but it doesn't feel that violent to me.

Sometimes I find thrash metal that's more extreme or darker than brutal death metal.

My thoughts exactly. It feels like it's actively trying really hard to be over the top and dark to the point where it just becomes bland, uninteresting noise.

The last time I tried to listen to Cannibal Corpse, I decided to do a bit of an experiment. I picked an album (I don't remember which. I think it was Tomb of the Mutilated, but I don't think it really matters.), put on some headphones, shut off everything else, hit play and closed my eyes. I was trying to give it a legitimate shot and see if the reason I never could get into them was because I never listed deeply enough.

I literally couldn't tell one song from the next.

I turn it off about four, five songs in because not only did the songs all blur together incomprehensibly, I could barely tell when one song ended and the next began. It almost felt like I was listening to one ridiculously long cacophony.

Give me some Amon Amarth or Scar Symmetry instead. I find more melodic styles of death metal to be more interesting.

Besides the fact that Cannibal Corpse is neither brutal death metal or slam they aren't even a good death metal band period. I can't even really say they're overrated because most metal heads know they aren't a very good band in the first place. Just one that somehow got more mainstream recognition than others.

This is true. My point was more to express where my upper limit of heaviness sits (again, somewhere around Amon Amarth), while hopefully telling an amusing story of one of the ways I've found that upper limit.

Oh lol well I would say there's plenty of bands heavier and more brutal than Cannibal Corpse who have a more diverse selection of songs though. Some of it does get too same but Carcass`s Symphonies of Sickness for example is far nastier and have than Cannibal Corpse yet the songs are more memorable and it's catchy with plenty of hooks. Not saying that it would be your thing or even recommending it but just putting it out there for anyone interested in a good extreme metal album that doesn't suffer the same issue and actually has memorable songs.

I feel like a lot of these bands sound this way for the sake of "being brutal" rather than for the sake of making music and having a style. Anyway, there are more disturbing bands out there that are legitimately disturbing rather than trying to be forced brutal, especially in the black metal scene.

Can't remember the band's name(I don't listen to black metal because I find the vocals weak) but there was one that used their band member's actual death scene photo where he shot himself (with a shotgun in the head iirc) as album cover. THATS fucking brutal, not this forced "style".

That was Mayhem. In terms of these types of actions I'd say the harsh noise and industrial scene is far worse than the metal scene like with Missing foundation where they set themselves on fire and incited major riots, or with Hanatarash where Eye ran the stage over with a bulldozer and threw junk around with the back hoe. Apparently Hanatarash had to break up because they were banned from playing anywhere in Japan.

Oh yeah those sound familiar. I remember hearing an incident about a black metal vocalist(can't remember who again) who cut off his hands during a recording and sewn pig's feet onto his amputated limbs, not sure how true that is. These people are fucking insane.

One of the few things I know about metal is that there are way too many subgenres, but that sounds like the subgenre of a subgenre of a subgenre of metal, it's oddly specific lol

Meanwhile we actually do have bands out there who are put into the same genre when they actually do need different sub genres to separate them.

Slam is great, I highly recommend Vulvodynia 8) it's so over the top that it isn't music that one would take seriously, imo. Just fun to listen to since it's so chaotic.

Anal Cunts album art is hilarious

But seriously, alot of extreme metal dumb as f. Punk usually does a way better job of conveying aggression.

I like brutal death metal. Bands like Suffocation, Dying Fetus and Cryptopsy are really good in my opinion.

When it comes to slam death metal I rarely listen to it. In my opinion it's one of the most repetitive and boring subgenre of metal there is.

Hey everybody, is this tread still relevant?

I recently returned to MAL for new anime, but I was curious about metalfans here. I have been listening to metal for almost 20 years and have heard al genres, subgenres, hybrids ect. I find in my journey many surprises of newer generations of extreme music. My personal highest recommendation is Shadow of Intent. Not neccesairily br00tal or slam, but it draws from death metal, deathcore, black metal and other extreme elements.

Have fun and I hope to find more metalmaniacs on here!

Yeah I was a big Slam head before, I've branched too much into music to really focus on it like I did before but yeah here's some of my faves

Ah slam, I just really love it for how crushing it is, and the vocals are a treat for me, an acquired taste and ear to enjoy it but seeing as I've gotten into much more avant-garde noisy stuff now this still hits the spot.

this shit's cool when you're 16. not so much anymore when you grow up. some of the most boring uninspired crap in the scene, same with gore and pornogrind.

Lord Gore is the only band that stuck with me from that period. but i wont call them brutal death metal. musically much better than what they usually get grouped up with. like they had Rectal Smegma open for them when they came to the Netherlands, a local band for me, but a god damn embarrassment.
pretty funny is that they're actually really easy to understand.

but honestly its better to just stick with bands like Bolt Thrower when it comes to DM.
