Do you judge anime by the cover or a short clip?

Do you decide to watch anime just from the cover or a short scene?

I did this with some of my favourite anime.
Girl's Bravo - I decided to watch it just from the banana scene.
School Days - all I saw was a character from it when I decided to watch it.
Aria the Animation - I saw the cover picture, and that got me to watch it.
Zero no Tsukaima - I just saw a short scene from the first episode, and all I knew was that it had something to do with a guy going to another world.

I didn't read the descriptions for any of these.

Sadly, yes. I've watched so many animes just because I liked the opening, for example.
Everyday a different sig.

Unfortunately, yes.

Sometimes, I watch an anime just base how its Title sounds cool to me i.e. "Betrayal Knows my Name", I didn't even check any clips or pictures of it.

Maybe yes... I always judge anime from the cover... But sometimes I will look the inside.

Depend on anime genre.. if it has genre I like (comedy or psychological), I usually give it a chance...

I normally don't like anime where there are so many girls and one male MC (you can say "harem"), and my first impression when I saw konosuba's cover made me "meh"... but I see comedy there so I tried to look what's inside. And I love it. I was enjoy the comedy in it.

Pretty much. Aside from seasonals that's pretty much how I pick out a majority of the shows I watch or add to my plan to watch list

No, I go into anime as blind as possible. The only thing I generally see is the MAL Cover art, and then even then, I don't exactly judge it.

I judge an anime by it covers. For example if I see a much of girls in the cover and one male(usually in the back) my interest level drops down hard. However if it's a cool character on the cover like The Major, Alucard, or Guts, I would check it out.

Every single one of you judges an anime by it's cover, it doesn't mean you will develop a bias that determines your liking of the show, but if the only information you have to go on is superficial stuff, that's what your judgement will be based on.

I wouldn't say that I strictly watch something based on covers or scenes, as there are more things that influence my final decision, but it does play a part.

I typically will just see a picture of one of the characters or see them on an AMV and I'm like, "Well damn somebody looks cool." Then jump down to the description section to see what it is.

I will admit that I have. Like with many other factors, often either the cover grabs my attention and then I add it to my PTW if the description sounds good or someone recommended it to me and told me what it's about but I don't actually add it to my PTW unless the cover looks good. Either way the cover could be viewed as the determining factor even if it wasn't the only factor.

Judging an anime by only it's cover is just stupid. Imagine not watching Madoka Magica because of the cover. You'd be missing out on a great show. Princess Tutu is another example. If I only saw the cover and knew the name, I would have missed out on a really great show. For me, the premise and people/studio who worked on the anime are what make me watch it.

yes.

covers of konosuba and re:zero where it shows mainly girls makes me want to avoid it for a long while, i end up waiting a few episodes down and see the rating/reviews if its worth it or not.

I tend to look at the descriptions more than the covers, the only thing that makes me avoid stuff immediately is the 'harem' tag.

Is it even posible to not judge from the cover? When you are about to pick something to watch is almost impossible to ignore the cover. In fact I used to decide what to watch based solely on the cover or the opening.

I mean, who wouldn't judge this cover?

I'm sure most would just judge that as another kids show with bad animation without even watching a PV (and they would probably be right)

That led me to watch Seikon no Qwaser so I stopped doing that though, now I also look up the genre, the people involved in the anime and the studio, but the cover still is the main attention grabber to me.

You kinda have to be an idiot not to judge. It's basic human nature. I see Gundam shit and I immediately don't want to watch it. All art styles from before 2005 bug me. For anyone that argues art doesn't matter, only the story does: you're an idiot. Read fucking books. Or maybe you've come to the point that you're such a complete dumbass that you argue that it needs to be anime. As if the country of origin and language matters.

Yes I do most of the times.
And less than 5% of those times, I'm surprised by what's presented before me.

The biggest mistake was judging One Piece Movie 6 by it's shitty cover. Turned out it was directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who also directed Wolf Children, Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and the recent Bakemono no Ko. Easily one of the best and most unique One Piece movies out there.

Yes I do. However, I will read the description and watch the PV too. If it appeals to me, I'll watch it. Also, cover art gives me a general idea of how the art style will turn out to be. Anime relies heavily on the art style and animation to bring out the story, therefore it's an important aspect for me.

I don't. A lot of good ankles can have bad covers and vice versa. Sometimes the cover doesn't even reflect the animation. I do however, judge it by clips, though that's only for me to decide on whether to watch it or not. I wouldn't have watched Kokoro Connect if it wasn't for that trailer. Same goes for Ao Haru Ride

Well because of the different visual styles present in anime I think the cover can tell you more what it's about than in other media.

For example, you're not gonna have an anime like Kaiba sporting a cover like this:

Almost everyone does that, including myself. First I'd see if the cover/poster looks somehow cool I'll watch the trailer, I'll check the casts production details, then decide whether it's gonna be worth my time or not. Except those few animes I have/will watch(ed) because I've already played the game or read the books.
I mean, that't the exact purpose of promotional posters and trailers right? To let people judge at first sight

I've come to a point where I can't stand the generic Visual Novel art style where everything feels like it's made out of plastic, something almost every anime uses nowadays.

I don't really care about the animation quality, but if something uses that kind of artstyle I tend to get frustrated for some reason.

Other than that, since I'm an extremely slow watcher as well as extremely picky, yes I tend to judge an anime by its cover. I know I'm missing out on great things, but I can't really help it.

You're missing the three best genres on MAL, :(

Especially when Evangelion brings the best out of the three ;p

Also personally i don't judge an anime by its cover, and thanks goodness because i wouldn't have watched Shounen maid otherwise, though this show was very good
