Holy fuck, Subaru is really desperate now, the faces he makes are pure horror. At this point, you really have to feel for him as the candidates really have no clue.

The white whale is here! (and yes, thats not a spoiler if you guys pay attention ffs)

Subaru's act pretty reckless in this episode, not that he never done it like that before. But to put Emilia's camp at stake?!

I made a pretty long, detailed analysis of his psychological health a few weeks back. Ever since, it has been apparent: some people are having a very hard time understanding this shows themes - namely, psychological deterioration is correlated to irrational behavior. I just skip over people complaining that he is acting dumb - since the show has put this TEENAGER through some brutal stuff. He just can't cope. It is obvious. And it seems like at this point, you either see it or you are probably not yet at a point to be able to analyze the deeper meanings in various literature/stories

Exactly!
Beside, when he was desperate and even discarded his pride to ask for help. Some people will blame him because he didn't realize her test LOL
And if he refuses to lick her feet, they will blame him for other reasons

Well it is MAL so...

Anyway... that Hakugei though... too cool. Priscilla is also awesomely portrayed in this episode.

I totally love how this episode ends with Otto saying he don't know the man Subaru is talking about, since that's totally explaining of what's coming. Also explaining the hint of why "one would not survive in the White Whale's mist"

Next episode is gonna be suffering...

What? I thought you were on record that next week would be one of your top 5 fav episodes? I could be mistaken tho...

Well, that was a solid ep. Good to see Priscilla again! I barely even remember what the OP and ED sounds like since they almost never play them lol. But that's good, they don't want to waste time!

I have an Emilia poster I got at the bookstore yesterday right over my computer, it looks pretty nice.

Spot on. I think a key here is creating tension with a unique power like his - this revive after death. And since one of the crucial elements to storytelling is the building, escalating, and finally breaking of the tension/conflict - one of the only ways to have the viewer feel the tension, while knowing (to a degree) that death is not permanent In this world, is from a psychological aspect.

Maybe I can understand if it was still the earlier portion of the series. It seemed new viewers (myself included)could reasonably have trouble finding this shows identity. You could make the case that this show was going down a slice of life road, the "stuck Ina game world, a harem, and all kinds of various other options.
However, now it is - and has been for quite a while now - clearly a psychological show. To watch it from any other POV while ignoring this is totally missing the point. And to miss such an obvious point for so long - well, they probably wouldn't agree with me anyway. No point debating at this point.

Welp. Congrats ReZero you ruined me Gojira's Flying Whales now.

The problem with this show is that the author touts this as the supposed "deconstruction" of LNs, but there's not really any deconstruction going on. The author is just a creepy and sick sadist who enjoys making his character go through hell, but the story still has the same tropes that all LNs have and same otaku pandering, just with a whole lot more tasteless and gross edgy gore.

This is no longer the show I signed up for.

I started ReZero because it had a likeable, SMART, and realistic protagonist being transported into interesting lore full of political manipulations, mysteries and great lore. I started ReZero because it showed such an MC working it through the problems via brain less than brawn and we saw him figure out things and solve things without pointless asspulling. I started it and loved it because the show could build tension without cheap gores and create stakes without gross edgy Jigsaw level of perversion. It was an interesting world full of mystery that Subaru was transported to and I could not wait to see him figure out what the hell is going on, as well as to see the whole political play in royal candidacy.

None of that is here now.

Somewhere along the way, the author seems to have forgotten what coherence is or what kind of story it is and just delved headfirst into sadistic torture being thrown into the characters. Because, since the MC can rewind time, you can surprise your viewers with gory and triggering shit, because you can hadnwave it seconds away. So everything can be shocking cliffhanger! Because none of that will end up mattering. So now you can have gross and disgusting ways for MC to die and the edgier audience will eat that up shouting the usual phrases of DECONSTRUCTION, SUBVERSION, blah blah, and other words that Madoka for some reason popularized.

But the show is not really doing a deconstruction. Nor is it delivering on the original premise I fell in love with.

It feels like author abandoned any semblance of interesting and mature story or sake of cheap thrills and shocking gory deaths, so it can sell and the viewers can be pandered to and kept with the show via countless cliffhangers and dark events.

But it is not a deconstruction.

It does not deconstruct. It does not change anything, except making Subaru an unlikeable jerk at times and changing the levels of IQ for various characters so the author can deliver "TEH MAXIMUM SUFFERING(tm)". Like in this episode where the author literally makes all the candidates be literally dumb hitler just so he can put Emilia on a pedestal. Oh and lets make Subaru dumb and unable to convince people suddenly because we need teh suffering guyse. How is this the same dude who negotiated with the apple seller in EP1 is beyond me.

This show abandoned all the interesting lore, all the interesting mystery and all the elements that made Subaru likeable and realistic, thus turning him into an anti-stu. The show abandoned all of that for sake of becoming an embodiment of the "SUFFERING!" Meme. While still keeping cringy ln tropes in it.

So I am out. The show has warped into a weird sadistic thing created by a sick an twisted author who just wants suffering and edge instead of coherence and good storytelling. Its as if you start watching something like Lord of the Rings and then suddenly it morphs into cheap horror stuff like Texas Chainsaw Massacre or The Saw. And then lets morph it into some horror movie with giant sea monsters.

Yet MC still will end up following same path via same waifu filled LN tropes, except he will win via SUFFERING(tm) instead of fighting.

I might pick up show again when it is finished and I can just skip all the episodes and scenes that make my stomach turn and cause me panic attacks.Barely anything of importance is happening. In fact all we had for last 4 or so episodes was Subaru's SUFFERING(Tm) and him being an idiot. No plot progression, no lore, no politics, none that I liked about the show. This is Arc2 all over again in that it drags for dozen episodes, except ARc2 had likeable Subaru and interesting lore and mystery. But right now I think I am content with just watching Alderamin on The Sky this season - at least that seems to be an actual adaptation of Ln that IS interested in doing things differently from other LNs and delivering things that ReZero forgot for sake of cheap gore.

Its sad to see the show drop the ball so hard after brilliant well directed 11 episodes. It is still VERY well directed and I am sure it evokes all the things the author wanted it to. It is sure as hell not the worst thing in this season, but it is no longer the show I fell in love with and the writing is nowhere near as good as first 11 episodes and I can't handle the gross shit this show now throws at the viewer for sake of cheap shocks.

Dropped.

This, so much. I'm starting to generally avoid forums because people have a really bad understanding and act as though everything they would do would be right if they were in any other character's situation. But as they say, ignorance is bliss.

Ah, nice run through the candidates to destroy any of my hopes that Subaru had a plan to somehow coerce/use them(at least not yet) Though it really would have been too soon considering his mental state. Those scenes were great for showing him him what he needs to learn and how he needs to teach himself to think. I feel like reading those scenes would have even more impact and help people realize Subaru isn't just 'acting dumb and irrational', but the show does as well as it probably can in doing it.

Of course the narrative makes it look that way when you have all three candidates trashing his character one after another, but it reminds of Emilia-from other's perspectives he is acting irrational, but they don't have a shred of a clue of what he's gone through so their reactions to him are natural and how they should react.

Which makes things so interesting because he's being graded on a scale of someone that is experiencing things for the first time and should act more cool-headed and articulate, when he's far from being able to do that. And it's going to be cool as fuck when he finally teaches himself to think this way despite everything he knows how his experiences have conditioned him. That's when he truly becomes dangerous, it'll be like he's thinking with two brains.

Interesting to see Iron Fang there were a lot of them lol. Subaru also learned some lessons tips in Negotiating. Seeing all the characters and the way they act was interesting as well. Next episode will be interesting

Next episode is gonna be suffering...

What? I thought you were on record that next week would be one of your top 5 fav episodes? I could be mistaken tho...

Next episode's going to be worse than the last episode :.(

Subaru is losing it ^^" And he's leaving such a bad impression on the candidates in the process...

Well, Subaru's getting pretty desperate, and it sure as hell isn't pretty. Not only has he completely disregarded the concepts of tact and respect, as well as seemingly forgetting how to act on the down-low to try and figure things out (though it's fair enough with what he's been through), he nearly tried to attack three of the five candidates without so much as a second thought about the time or place or the damage it does to his already-flimsy negotiating position. He certainly seems to be going off the deep-end, but this time in a different way to how it happened before; if anything, he seems to be getting closer to Betelgeuse rather than just completely falling apart like he had before (I wonder how long it'll take until he realises, that is, if he ever realises at all). Really, all I wonder at this point is about that giant monster near the tree (a trap placed by the witch cultists to stop anyone disrupting the Ordeal?) and Al calling Subaru "brother" and disliking being called Aldebaran. Well, at least they explained why Roswaal wasn't able to do anything about the witch cultists in either of the previous two loops in this arc. ED's a nice song, but the images are so cute that it just feels out of place.

Oh, and good riddance to @Fai. (S)He won't be missed, that's for sure.

I think its obvious now that Subaru doesn't have the best luck when it comes to women. Well besides Rem.

Not as dark as the last episode but still very good. The other candidates are straight savage. I thought they would lend him some kind of help. Hell just asking almost got him killed, but at the same time I can see where they coming from. At the end of the day its politics.

Dat ending had me dying lol. Just when I was like "Okay maybe things are looking up now" a big ass whale pops up out of nowhere.

Once again I cant even begin to think what will happen next episode, but I can't wait for it.

Great episode, I find this one better than the previous one. One thing I didn't quite understand tho, what did Anastasia trick Sabaru into doing that made him so mad exactly?

Cool, bye. Now we don't need to see your constant use of buzzwords and your endless complaints..........unless you do what you did with Boku no Hero where you said several times that you'd drop it, only to show up again in the next episode's thread.

Also, you seem to be the only person in these threads who gets panic attacks from this show. I don't see anyone else saying they feel the need to vomit after watching this, nor do they come close to having panic attacks. I find it odd that this show affected you THAT badly....but maybe I'm just a messed up person and that's why I don't feel sick or whatever after watching this.
I'm no special story or anything. I'm just a manga that wants to be read, like you could find anywhere. But, if, for argument's sake, you were to adapt me into an anime series, it would certainly be....a tragedy.

She was trying to extract any juicy details from him, while Subaru seemed to take the whole situation as a normal conversation instead of a negotiation. It seems like Subaru mentioning Russell being at Crusch's place was a nice tidbit of information for her, and he just let it slip out not considering anything.

More specifically it was also the manner in which she revealed doing so as well. Essentially taunting him on top of belittling him.

The writing in this show is great, last week I said this

Keltrick's last sentence in his third paragraph is very interesting and actually ties back into something beetlejuice said.

Beetlejuice asked Subaru if he was "pride". Think about it for a moment @Keltrick ,you even said it yourself that Subaru refuses to ask for help or seek alternative options and goes crazy when people belittle or exclude him (ultimate thinking they look down on him etc) isn't this a sinful type of pride?

With his resets he always tries to solve the situation on his own when the reality is, someone more powerful or knowledgeable ALWAYS had to help him solve the situations he was put in. I'm almost 100% certain he's going to have to suck up his pride and realize he cannot do it alone. More than likely he will be forced to ask Reinhardt and the other guy (the one who shamed him) to help. I could be looking too much into it but that's how it came across to me.

http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1532099&show=1400#msg46882000

Which essentially happened, but I didn't expect the author to cover every base, i.e. all the queen candidates, the knights and rein. I really enjoy how tight the writing is.

What exactly were you expecting, though? If that were really the case with the show, what would be the point of Return by Death?
I can understand your thoughts about the series, but they seem to be based on the wrong idea. This is more based on the consequences of the respawning, if anything.
I don't exist. But, maybe, I once did.

Very good eps see you do not need all in violets to make good anime. I am a bit lost on the "rules" of what he can and cant say becuse it seems like he saying things in this eps that he could not say in other eps.

Something that is bugging me to no end about this anime is it seems like Subaru has never been to school or at least dose not understand any thing about the world he is from becuse there tech he could use and "sell" as tools to get things done that he wants. Gun powder alone should give him a kingdom if he knows how to even make electricity and light that would go a long way. Even knowing songs ideals or poems he could go far. Why dose he seem not to know ANY THING about this?

Fai,

I read your post. I understand what you are saying. I fundamentally disagree as my prior posts would indicate. But I respect your right to an opinion. However, due to this quote of yours:

To have a show literally or metaphorical produce the feelings of panic and sick to your stomach - that IS powerful, GOOD storytelling. Now you say it's due to cheap gore- that is where I mainly disagree.

Yet you cannot deny that this show is impacting you- watching the MC endure in this world has been a ride you have felt. Right now the feeling is horrible - but I say for an author to produce ANY strong emotions like this;
That is a very GOOD thing, not bad.
I believe many feel your empathy for these characters, which is why I think they are - and I would encourage you also- to stick with it until the end.
Enjoy the ride, because it is not often we care about the journey. And this anguish makes it all the more satisfying to witness the climax of the story and to watch the conclusion unfold. I personally am looking forward to watching this play out, and I am enjoying the FEELING involved with the various plot twists.
Now you may very well be right in some parts of your assessment, but I am waiting for it to all conclude before judging. I like to enjoy the ride, and would encourage you to try to also.
If you want, check out a few of my previous posts going back to the start of July (I think there's only 3-4); they detail my psychological interpretation.

I can not help but shiver every episode of Re:Zero, its awesome

I see many people dont knowing what is the big eye in the end. Im the only one that remember Rem talking about a white whale that would kill them if they go for a X route?

I suppose that next episode Subaru-kun will die and will use all the negotiation advices that they give him to convince at least crusch(She can be saw in the opening fighting with the whale..)

Sorry for my english, spanish speaker here >.<

Glad none of the royal candidates helped him, he doesn't have anything to offer back.
Why the heck is Subaru's phone still functional after so long lmao?
Rin's voice actor being a manipulative cunt, what else did you expect?
Subaru has access to Roswall's money? Well that makes things easier.

I give this a c-. Felt it could have use a ittle bit more troll and a little bit more bait. Try making it shorter next time. Other than that this was a pretty good troll. Hope to see improvement in the next episode thread.

A poster wrote in another forum that "...the main problem I have with this show is that it demands we wait an absolute age for any semblance of a payoff. Needs more carrot and less stick." I agree to an extent. It's an excellent show but at the moment I feel like this is an exercise in contained masochism. How much longer can Subaru go with all this madness, monstruosity and butchery, and to top it off have all these incredibly nasty, condescending and smug people rejecting using and/or abusing him?
I feel I need a drink after every episode.

I'm skimming the episodes at this point. I can't even watch them in their entirety. I'm no masochist. It's getting tiring watching this show that seems like it's designed for male feminist cucks.

Subaru's "the power of suffering will save the day" story line is getting old.

I'm at the point now where i invested half the series not knowing it would turn into this "endless 8" exercise in masochism. So i'll probably just continue skimming the rest of the series just to see the ending.

What exactly were you expecting, though? If that were really the case with the show, what would be the point of Return by Death?
I can understand your thoughts about the series, but they seem to be based on the wrong idea. This is more based on the consequences of the respawning, if anything.

I expected focus on Subaru figuring out things and learning things via trial and error.

Nothing in the first 11 episodes of the show ever hinted that it will be about him dying via gross and random ways and learning nothing, but getting dumber.

I don't really care about consequences of respawning. I expected smart uses for it and a protagonist that uses his brain. Like getting stuck in a murder mystery, being killed by the killer and then in next loop using the knowledge to figure out the culprit. That kind of things.

Like i compared in my post this is like watching Lord of the Rings and it suddenly goes texas chainsaw massacre in terms of tone and priorities. Or watching Legend of Galactic Heroes and it suddenly turns into Elfen Lied.

Its not what I liked about the show and the overall story is no longer moving forward, being stuck in a sadistic rut of delivering suffering and death.

To have a show literally or metaphorical produce the feelings of panic and sick to your stomach - that IS powerful, GOOD storytelling. Now you say it's due to cheap gore- that is where I mainly disagree.

Yet you cannot deny that this show is impacting you- watching the MC endure in this world has been a ride you have felt. Right now the feeling is horrible - but I say for an author to produce ANY strong emotions like this;
That is a very GOOD thing, not bad.

Oh I agree it is very well directed. The gore is VERRY effective but it is not what the show promised. The show is basically a 25 episode long screamer video where it seems one thing at first and then gives you heart attack.

It is just not delivering in terms of writing what I watned and its priorities shifted to gore. And the plot came to a halt.
It simply does not have what I liked about the show anymore nor what I wanted out of it.
