So many guys clearly not understanding politics. If 2 parts that are at war or are fighting for soverinity over something. In case who will rule this land. Then you do not help the other side. Do you North or South Korea would help the other part for no benefit? You dont help your current or future enemy.

And Subara should just take Rem abandon everyone else and let them all die. Rem is a better girl than Emilia anyways.

And like Crush said. If Emilie/Roswall are not able to defend their own lands. Then they are not suitable to be a leader.

Welp. Congrats ReZero you ruined me Gojira's Flying Whales now.

The problem with this show is that the author touts this as the supposed "deconstruction" of LNs, but there's not really any deconstruction going on. The author is just a creepy and sick sadist who enjoys making his character go through hell, but the story still has the same tropes that all LNs have and same otaku pandering, just with a whole lot more tasteless and gross edgy gore.

This is no longer the show I signed up for.

I started ReZero because it had a likeable, SMART, and realistic protagonist being transported into interesting lore full of political manipulations, mysteries and great lore. I started ReZero because it showed such an MC working it through the problems via brain less than brawn and we saw him figure out things and solve things without pointless asspulling. I started it and loved it because the show could build tension without cheap gores and create stakes without gross edgy Jigsaw level of perversion. It was an interesting world full of mystery that Subaru was transported to and I could not wait to see him figure out what the hell is going on, as well as to see the whole political play in royal candidacy.

None of that is here now.

Somewhere along the way, the author seems to have forgotten what coherence is or what kind of story it is and just delved headfirst into sadistic torture being thrown into the characters. Because, since the MC can rewind time, you can surprise your viewers with gory and triggering shit, because you can hadnwave it seconds away. So everything can be shocking cliffhanger! Because none of that will end up mattering. So now you can have gross and disgusting ways for MC to die and the edgier audience will eat that up shouting the usual phrases of DECONSTRUCTION, SUBVERSION, blah blah, and other words that Madoka for some reason popularized.

But the show is not really doing a deconstruction. Nor is it delivering on the original premise I fell in love with.

It feels like author abandoned any semblance of interesting and mature story or sake of cheap thrills and shocking gory deaths, so it can sell and the viewers can be pandered to and kept with the show via countless cliffhangers and dark events.

But it is not a deconstruction.

It does not deconstruct. It does not change anything, except making Subaru an unlikeable jerk at times and changing the levels of IQ for various characters so the author can deliver "TEH MAXIMUM SUFFERING(tm)". Like in this episode where the author literally makes all the candidates be literally dumb hitler just so he can put Emilia on a pedestal. Oh and lets make Subaru dumb and unable to convince people suddenly because we need teh suffering guyse. How is this the same dude who negotiated with the apple seller in EP1 is beyond me.

This show abandoned all the interesting lore, all the interesting mystery and all the elements that made Subaru likeable and realistic, thus turning him into an anti-stu. The show abandoned all of that for sake of becoming an embodiment of the "SUFFERING!" Meme. While still keeping cringy ln tropes in it.

So I am out. The show has warped into a weird sadistic thing created by a sick an twisted author who just wants suffering and edge instead of coherence and good storytelling. Its as if you start watching something like Lord of the Rings and then suddenly it morphs into cheap horror stuff like Texas Chainsaw Massacre or The Saw. And then lets morph it into some horror movie with giant sea monsters.

Yet MC still will end up following same path via same waifu filled LN tropes, except he will win via SUFFERING(tm) instead of fighting.

I might pick up show again when it is finished and I can just skip all the episodes and scenes that make my stomach turn and cause me panic attacks.Barely anything of importance is happening. In fact all we had for last 4 or so episodes was Subaru's SUFFERING(Tm) and him being an idiot. No plot progression, no lore, no politics, none that I liked about the show. This is Arc2 all over again in that it drags for dozen episodes, except ARc2 had likeable Subaru and interesting lore and mystery. But right now I think I am content with just watching Alderamin on The Sky this season - at least that seems to be an actual adaptation of Ln that IS interested in doing things differently from other LNs and delivering things that ReZero forgot for sake of cheap gore.

Its sad to see the show drop the ball so hard after brilliant well directed 11 episodes. It is still VERY well directed and I am sure it evokes all the things the author wanted it to. It is sure as hell not the worst thing in this season, but it is no longer the show I fell in love with and the writing is nowhere near as good as first 11 episodes and I can't handle the gross shit this show now throws at the viewer for sake of cheap shocks.

Dropped.

I understand Subaru is suffering, however it is very true that he just keeps asking and asking. His actions during this episode are honestly not rational. He could have mentioned about how if Emilia was killed, a Giant Monster will freeze the entire world. He could have not burst out ranting on and on about killing the Witch Cult. He doesn't offer anything substantial in return for their help. In all honesty, Subaru has been suffering these few episodes but of it is to be blamed on himself. Of course I don't mean to diss him, he is just being human, and has been cornered to that degree. But isn't it too unreasonable to think that everyone should follow his way of thinking? Sometimes I feel like Subaru forgets that he is in a fantasy world during the Medieval Ages.

What Subaru needs to rationally do is to explore all options available. Ascertain who are willing to fight against the Witch Cult. Who won't. Then efficiently recruit all the ones who are willing so that he can save everyone. In the past two loops, he was already late. Does he really think that he can accomplish all that within a single loop? He needs to do a trial by error and make all preparations before going for broke. Instead he is just going back with one person AGAIN. More importantly, he shoul have appealed to the other candidates by their ideals. Pride for the stuck-up chick and military chick, greed for the merchant chick. He just rants on and on about the Witch Cult.

Some people are missing the point of this whole arc. It's mean to to show Subaru at his lowest point. You're not supposed to like him for the most part. Keep in mind this is one part of a much larger story. Other arcs will be different and will the way Subaru acts.

I found Subaru hard to watch this episode, the candidates are mostly douchebags but he needs to wise up fast.

Pretty much. Subaru was able to solve the previous mishaps quite satisfying-ly (despite the shit he went through) so I think that got into his head, which is why now he's seeing how reality actually works, and is suffering. Add to that him seeing people he love constantly die and we get someone who's way too desperate to think properly and gets mad at others for being logical.

I think subaru's attitude is perfectly justifiable, i mean, after all the madness he has gone through... to be fucked like that just for wanting some help.

Expecting a lot the next episode.

Good job Rezero. I thought Yuki Rito from TLR/Darkness was useless. Now that I know this Subaru from ReZero, I can say Yuki Rito is not anymore the most useless character.

I kinda believe that you can tell the story without him now since all he is doing are "try and die" runs until reach the golden way to Emilia-tan. I wonder if at some point he will use his cellphone and use a Rezero wiki to find a "how to survive guide" wiki page.

Back to Ep 16:

This week feels sure boring after all that suffering last week. To be expected but we got nothing out of this episode. It felt like... "you can skip to to ep17".

And we have now this situation:
"whale whale whale..."

Whale whale whale... lets see how Ep 17 will turn out. Let me guess, dying again.

YO THAT GIANT EYE STARING AT SUBARU AT THE END WAS SOME HORROR STORY STUFF

that was awesome

Also I completely forgot about the phone, I wonder if it'll be the key to saving him

Also, I'll just admit I'm retarded (more probable that they werent clear or the translation wasn't clear), what was up with Subaru and the bar full of cat people? How did Anastasia Hoshin double-cross him or screw him over? I didn't really understand that part

I assume Felt was outside of the capitol with Reinhart, otherwise why didn't he think to ask her for help? She's somewhat skilled, probably has some influence through Reinhart's backing, and would be the most likely to help him after that first arc. Or am I missing something else?

He did learn through trial and error, which is how he got through the first two arcs. But it's had the wrong effect on him personally, because he thinks he's the main character of a fantasy adventure... which is certainly frustrating, but then you have the supporting cast letting him know how much of an idiot he is. It's really all you can expect from a shitty NEET who got trapped in a fantasy world.

And I mean, it's not like the first two arcs were kid-friendly material either, Subaru still died pretty brutally.

He learned a lot in first two arcs but then he forgot it all, to the point of hte show making him contradict his own actions and what he learned in order to make his situation worse. And now he seems to be stuck in not learning anything and the story actually alters characters and situations to dick him over for maximum suffering. No good directing can prevent that.

He did die brutally but the brutality was never the focus - look at his second death in the mansion - We did not see a bit of death, even though that was one of the most brutal ways to die for him. It was all about his terror and giving him clues that he would use next time to solve it. It was part of situation but the gore was not the focus.

Now it is all about eye licking, bone twisting panic attack inducing nonsense. Oh and giant whales out of nowhere. VERY different level of gore and focus is all on the actual gore. The show before used the death as a consequences of his mistakes, but it was never the focus. The focus was what Subaru does with what he learned. Now the show REVELS in suffering and despair it can cause to Subaru.
Wait, what did Subaru actually learn in the first two arcs that would help him in this situation? I'm just curious since the way I see it the way he survived those two arcs is by being lucky to not die when he was almost killed and have someone else there coincidentally to keep him in the game. I'm asking this since from my perspective all I've noticed was Subaru learned circumstancial information that only helps on a case by case basis rather than give him insight into what he should do for a home invasion with heavy political implications so I don't really how the previous two situations help Subaru's current situation, other than pile emotional baggage for him.

It is reasonable... For us. We know what Subaru has been through. The other characters don't.

If someone appeared in front of you and told you he knews that there is going to be a bomb in the local government building and asks you for help breaking into it, but won't tell you know he knows, or give you any real evidence or incentive, you wouldn't help him. Subaru just keeps ranting and ranting without trying to be logical. In fact, he one-sidedly acts like all the other people have to do is follow what he says, and doesn't even try to appeal to their ideals or logic. He could have said to the stuck-up chick: "These people are going to be your subjects in the future since you are the obvious winner in those world. Can a natural leader abandon those people like that?" and appeal to her pride, instead of just ranting.

She was trying to extract any juicy details from him, while Subaru seemed to take the whole situation as a normal conversation instead of a negotiation. It seems like Subaru mentioning Russell being at Crusch's place was a nice tidbit of information for her, and he just let it slip out not considering anything.

alright i'm glad I'm not the only one who was baffled by how she screwed him over, basically he just got mad because she was taunting him that she used him for insider info instead of something like actually double-crossing him somehow

She only invited him to manipulate him and get information about the other royal candidates like Crusch, she didn't offer the help he expected aside from the dragon carriage location. I don't know what's up with the bar full of cat people, probably just intimidation.

Subaru is actually one of the most realistic characters I've seen in some time. I think as anime fans we are far to used to MC finding a hidden power or getting stronger. Subaru literally has nothing going for him other than sheer determination. It's no wonder he acts like he does.

I expected focus on Subaru figuring out things and learning things via trial and error.

Ok, I will concede that I thought this also in the beginning.

Fai said:

Nothing in the first 11 episodes of the show ever hinted that it will be about him dying via gross and random ways and learning nothing, but getting dumber.

Say this show gets renewed for another 25 episode season - not an unlikely scenario - the first 11 episodes would merely be a prologue. Even take your example the Lord of the Rings, the entire story is based off of the novel "The Hobbit" - and it is surely a minuscule and different story in theme, tone, mood, and much more. No one should be able to predict the outcome based on such a small sample unless it is some cliche story.

Fai said:

I don't really care about consequences of respawning. I expected smart uses for it and a protagonist that uses his brain. Like getting stuck in a murder mystery, being killed by the killer and then in next loop using the knowledge to figure out the culprit. That kind of things.

I passionately disagree. However, this quote basically sums up why you don't like it anymore. The thing you are not interested in is the entire point of the show. Its his psychological deterioration. But I wont get into that anymore, as i have said much on this topic. I will say this, he is not getting dumber - he is acting more human than most protagonists. Not many can watch their loved ones and even themselves die a thousand deaths and still face the next day. Our MC is trapped in hell. He cant kill himself or be allowed to die. He is forced to fight against fate - that is interesting as hell. It is not something that goes about in a way that can be called a cliche. I love the concept. You dont, thats fine and fair - but I would like for you to see things from my POV and you would probably like it.

Fai said:

Like i compared in my post this is like watching Lord of the Rings and it suddenly goes texas chainsaw massacre in terms of tone and priorities. Or watching Legend of Galactic Heroes and it suddenly turns into Elfen Lied.

Its not what I liked about the show and the overall story is no longer moving forward, being stuck in a sadistic rut of delivering suffering and death.
Oh I agree it is very well directed. The gore is VERRY effective but it is not what the show promised. The show is basically a 25 episode long screamer video where it seems one thing at first and then gives you heart attack.

It is just not delivering in terms of writing what I watned and its priorities shifted to gore. And the plot came to a halt.
It simply does not have what I liked about the show anymore nor what I wanted out of it.

Again - thats perfectly okay for you to not like it. Unfortunately though, the things you say the show is doing - it is largely not. I just feel like you are missing the point, missing out, and passing an unfair judgment. We don't need to debate it. Sadly, I am now given the impression that your prefer for your entertainment to not challenge you to experience things outside your comfort zone - which is unfortunate if that is the case. There is a lot to be said for experiencing a wide variety of media that are creative in their blending of genres.

The Lord of the Rings is not an ideal benchmark for good writing. An epic saga, chalk full of lore, and a rich, high fantasy setting - yes; good writing - no, just IMO but it is full of plot holes, deus ex machinas, and cliche after cliche amongst other things...This is merely my opinion though (i'm not talking about the movie- that was awesome, but for reasons other than the quality of writing. Perhaps you are referring to TLotR's movie instead of the literature format by J.R.R. Tolkien?) This may be another issue, since you had expectations for more of a LoTR's like tale - which is, while epic - geared more towards the good vs evil, fairy tale troupe fanbases; these are typically younger viewers who would struggle with relativistic morality plots (shades of grey, no villains, just people in circumstances). This type of audience would a Charles Dickens type of novel than say, for example, Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" (a classic) or more contemporary styles of stories, i.e. "The Cathedral"

I just tend to enjoy more contemporary styles of literature where you have to read between the lines to understand the characters behaviors, emotions, and experiences - which is the case for Re: Zero.(

Nice tips that second princess gave away about negotiations... I even picked some of them to myself, it would be useful in a job interview too, lol

Also it was fun the she told subaru that the only way there is to improve the reputation would be to change one's past and no one could do this... well except for him, haha

Except that this episode developed the other candidates ( except Felt but we know a lot about her already ), introduced the whale problem and what will happen next ( Goddamn spoilers, I hate knowing what's gonna happen with that friggin whale ).

Plus again, it represents the biggest problem with Subaru and what makes me think he might not be Pride but Greed, or maybe even a combination of both of them. All he does is want. Even when he asks for a favor and has to give something in return, he doesn't really present something to offer. He just says ''oh i'll have a debt'' but he clearly knows what he wants.

I don't know how you could skip this episode tbh. It's pretty important in the story according to me. And I haven't read the LN/WN and have only a little idea of what comes next.

This is no longer the show I signed up for.
-snip-

2/5

That right there was your downfall.
The show "I" signed up for.
You put expectations on the show and when it didn't take the direction you wanted you started lashing out at it.
Congratulations, you're no different from any other anime fan. Welcome to the mediocrity that you and I are apart of.

You went into this show with your standards of what /you/ consider good writing even though there are many forms of it and when it didn't perform as well as anime you're fond off, you bash it.

I bet you if Subaru just tackled every situation flawlessly such as Episode 13 and only was troubled via outside circumstances than his own then you would praise the show.
You say this isn't the Subaru you know. But you don't know the dude at all? I mean, barely any of the people here even know his backstory. Did it not come across to you, that maybe? Maybe this bad side of his that suddenly "showed up out of nowhere" in episode 13 had to deal with his life in the real world?

Can a character not have flaws that come from them instead of others?
I'm still perplexed how you called Subaru OOC when he was trying use his Shounen Protag wits to somehow win his favour in a political situation then Subaru is shocked that it doesnt work out here as well as it did in the mansion.

And to top it off. I feel this best sums up how you work.
You bashed the second Re:Zero Opening because it was "edgy". And you said you preferred the first Re:Zero Opening because the visuals reminded you of Steins;Gate. THERE YOU GO! Right there. "Reminded you of Steins;Gate" So you literally called the second opening pretentious and edgy just because it didn't have Steins;Gate like visuals

Re:Zero is giving you a good time at first as long as it takes the same direction your favorite anime takes. Re:Zero having similar development to Steins;Gate? GREAT! Re:Zero is great! Re:zero takes a different path from Steins;Gate? Bad! Horrendous writing!

Don't get me wrong, Fai. You're actually a pretty likeable person, but when it comes to conflict you're pretty stubborn. I really don't know what your beef is with this show anymore. At one point I seriously thought you were just salty because you were self-inserting with Subaru and when he didn't act how you would act you started bashing the entire show as a result.

THIS. This is the best answer you could give, as it is probably almost 100% accurate.

Fai, you're way too stuck on what YOU think is good writing. Hell yea, Steins;Gate is extremely good writing, I can agree on that. But Re:Zero isn't Steins;Gate. And Re:Zero shouldn't be like Steins;Gate. I mean, if you want copies over copies of other anime, you're free to watch Tokyo Ghoul, Sword Art Online, and all those OP and/or charismatic MCs.

It's getting harder and harder to watch Subaru suffering..
It's confirmed. Subaru has a Nokia. That "creature" won't be able to destroy Subaru's cell phone.

Than spoil me. Or give the source of it. I just want to know if Subaru is doing actually something instead being a savepoint.

Lmao, Subaru fucked up the negotations entirely. I cringed in the scene with Priscilla, he was really about to lick her feet. Anastasia totally rekted him too. It seems poor Subaru cannot catch a break.

And dat fucking ending with based whale appearing. Suffering will be real.

I have to say i love how everyone turned Subaru down.

In your typical anime subarus shouting would have epic soundtrack behind and all candidates would be like "OMG he is soo GAR and determent, he is right, we must bend together, throw away all personal gain and KILL THEM ALL"

exactly

"Okay. Now, what do I have to gain?" <---- never will the waifu-baits ask this, or if they do they give in when the guy says he likes them or something. so refreshing to see cut-throat negotiations

+1
I love it how the characters don't suddenly make a 180° turn. Their personality was established in episode 12 and they all appeared as very intimidating. It's good to see that they're treated like real "politicians" in this story.
Re:Zero nice troll ending.

God Subaru was just rejected in so many ways this ep, it's interesting to see how the last loop or two has changed his attitude to Rem at least. He's extremely aggressive to everyone, and only mildly aggressive to Rem now, which is a nice change.
I was also glad to see Subaru making some normal faces again xD
Oh and I sort of wanted them to add in Otto's talk about supporting Emilia here, I liked that scene quite a bit and thought it would be a nice reprieve from all the anxious tension, but with the introduction of the whale (?) if I'm not mistaken then I guess it wouldn't have been right to have Otto's speech there anyways

Nice ep, I can see Subaru's weak points and issues being brought to light many times by others, now it's more a matter of how many times he has to experience this to undergo change and development

I started ReZero because it had a likeable, SMART, and realistic protagonist being transported into interesting lore..........

Lol,i cant help but laugh everytime you call Subaru SMART :D its a shame you will no longer comment in every episode discussion about how smart Subaru was before he took an ar.........

Because, since the MC can rewind time, you can surprise your viewers with gory and triggering shit, because you can hadnwave it seconds away. So everything can be shocking cliffhanger! Because none of that will end up mattering. So now you can have gross and disgusting ways for MC to die

And this surprised you????Seriously?Did that really surprise you?

Lets sit down and think what other time travel-y show did the exact same thing shall we?
-Steins Gate
-Madoka Magica
-Higurashi
-Boku dake ga Inai Machi
-Mirai Nikki
-...

Oh right...EACH AND EVERY ONE with a serious theme...You can drop it or do whatever with it but stop playing the victim, its your fault....

He's phone a flip-phone model which is battery powered. He doesn't at all so it still working isn't a surprise. It's only been a month in a half since he go to this world afterall.

Stop skipping words dude, you're incomprehensible.
So what if it's battery powered? They have the means to recharge the battery in this "Isekai", that's very weird.

He wasn't using it. So there was still power left.

She played him like a dang violin

It's impossible to see that it's a whale in the episode because the only thing you see is its massive form being obscured by fog and its eye. Now tell me, if the only way I could possibly discern that it's a whale is if I read the Web/Light Novel, why would I be at fault for confusing it for something else?

And hey maybe they changed it for the anime, maybe it's a frog!

... goddamn I need to get out of these topics right away before I get spoiled on things
