nice guy complex, that is the perfect way to describe him lmao!

Haha, pretty much. You'd be surprised how common his behaviour archetype is found in real life but you seem to be aware of this already.
lamictal said:

i understand that this is all a part of a huge character development thing (at least i'm hoping so - after this long it's...ludicrous that the mc was made to be this selfish intentionally. i'm in a bit of disbelief), but i'm frustrated over the fact that it's taking this long. i'm sure you've heard this rant before, but i'm on ep 19 and
this is fiction, so i have some sort of expectations for the mc.. to at least grow.

I am in a similar boat as you. It's just that his character failure (or the breakdown of it) is one of the strong triggers for progressing the plot in the story. Episode 18 is titled "From Zero" and that marks the end of the prologue of the story. Around 10-15% of the whole thing as per the author, so the story is going to be a long one. Supposedly there will be 11-12 story arcs in total and the anime adapts the first 3. Arcs 1-2 (before the leave for the capital) set up the character, while the 3rd arc starts exposing the character flaws.

At present, he has achieved only some level of introspection into his own character. I'd argue that he is starting to take baby steps into the right path now. He is in no way completely evolving as a character just yet. Other than that, I feel time constraints hurt the anime adaptation where they had to skip out on some major aspects in how he learnt the art of negotiating with people from Anastasia. There was considerable thought put forth from his side in convincing Crusch that he is someone to be trusted. At least, it made me think of him differently. I'll leave it for you to read the summary of the events left by someone. Despite my hunches on what took place, I too was misled by how easily he breezed through Crusch like it was nothing.

Most of the things are there in the anime but I feel more time should have been given to it.
lamictal said:

i understand his frustration, but at this point it's not an excuse. his refusal to think rationally about the consequences of his actions is absurd. maybe i'll be pleasantly surprised and he'll make some sort of groundbreaking discovery about himself (saying something aloud that he himself isn't even fully understanding doesn't count).

Yeah, it isn't an excuse of any kind. If he wants to survive properly, he has to grow as a proper character over time. His ability provides him nothing in that department either. Besides his frustration, he cannot game or exploit his way out since the series makes it a point that dying is kind of useless if you haven't changed your attitude. I recall Subaru said something like "I can get as many 2nd chances as possible to redo things" and then he just gets whipped left and right soon after for having that mind set.

The other way of looking at it is that even the most overpowered "badass" can be insufferable if their behaviour isn't worth a salt. What good could be a person who is capable of controlling time when they are just making things worse. Of-course, Subaru cannot control time but the point remains.

He self-admittedly wasted his youth doing nothing by being a shut-in. As a result, he was "slothful" (for lack of a better word at the moment) about learning the necessary soft and hard skills on being a functioning member of society, which includes how to behave in front of people. It's just a thing from real life where character growth is supposed to be a life-long process. A person doesn't immediately turn a new leaf because of some turn of events. Their attitude takes time to adapt, that they will make the same mistakes a number of times before flushing it out of their systems for good. Well, this is what I feel the author seems to have in mind with writing his characters, a slow and gradual progression of character. Subaru's just been through this in just a little over a month, so I don't expect him to turn a new leaf just yet.

Call it some form of weird catharsis or maybe having the correct expectations from the show, could be just me but I don't know, it felt good to see a person like him getting smacked around, stumbling through and piecing himself together in the right manner towards growth. For what its worth, from the interviews with the author (Tappei Nagatsuki) we find that he is actually a full-time butcher in his family business. Him writing a web novel is a side gig of his and he claims to get inspiration for Subaru's circumstances when he is busy chopping meat. LOL

Man WTF is wrong with Subaru, he is like a little kid, annoying, thinks the world revolves around him, has a huge ego, thinking that nothing goes right unless he is there even though he is completely useless, I could go on...

New OP is cool, I like it. :)

Heh, this healing process must be hilarious, haha.

What a hardcore in its intensity ending. Who are those ghost-like people? And why that idiot Subaru did not reset the time earlier?!

I'm starting to like Rem even more than Emilia as a character.

I'm missing the witty nature we started out with, I'm all for it not holding back on the brutality but I did go from liking the show to now just thinking it's kind of meh. I really want to like this shit, please pique my interest a little bit more though.

I thought this episode was going to end with Subaru's recklessness leading him to death. and the dialog with the girl seemed to confirm it. It didn't though. and I was honestly surprised that rem died that way instead.

Subaru's characterization and pace that it's happening at has been a mess so it's hard to really care for what he's going through than what it's supposed to be. Again, I've read HakoMari and its my favorite series so I understand him suffering mentally through all these loops but the way he just suddenly changed from what he was preaching with the start of the new arc when everything was fine then without much build makes his characterization feel phony at best in this particular portion. Can't have shit like this just be sudden, it's got to build up to make it more believable. The ending was fine, as he collapses further and further and further with the harsh truths of reality as he's now stuck in a new situation which he has to figure out how to save everyone, especially Rem.

Also, Crusch is still good. The only genuinely and consistently likable character for me from this series 14 episodes in so far.

I'm feeling more and more disconnected to the story at the point. It' just so hard to feel emotionally invested in the story when you simply can't find yourself rooting for the MC.

Subaru is getting even more obsessed and creepy by the minute. And for someone who is so weak and knows so little about the world, he really ought to listen to others who know better, which he never does.

His stupid actions is ruining the show for me. I hope he redeems himself in future episodes.

its so annoying how people keep calling Subaru useless or a bad character, when he even isn't. He is practicing swordsmanship to get stronger with a sword, and he wants to be there for Emilia. Felix and Crusch gave him advice to better support him. Even Rem had faith in Subaru to make things right, and it was so wholesome. Subaru deserves better. especially with that ending (which shocked me greatly btw), Subaru now has to do what he needs to do in order to save the people he cares about. He wants to overcome his flaws and mistakes, which makes him a great character, especially remaining resilient after all that trauma. so many people on the Crunchyroll for this ep really don't understand Subaru at all, he has been through so much pain and he is trying to make everything right. he doesn't want to give up. I love this series more and more as Subaru's character highlights what makes us human.

I think Subaru's seemingly unfounded confidence comes from his ability, which means he can throw himself into dire situations as much as he wants until he chances at the most desirable outcome.

Watching Subaru 'learning swordsmanship' is the true definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
Must be a cultural thing, reminds me of Japanese office workers clocking in crazy hours with little outcome.
