My mom started to like Rurouni Kenshin a bit when i was watching it. My dad however... doesn't like it, he thought xxxHolic was porn... though anyone would if they didn't know what it was -_-U

I've actually got my mom, into InuYasha, and Fruits Basket and she kind of likes Saiunkoku Monogatari. Though with my dad he doesn't like it but if I were to show him a anime it would probably be something like Cowboy Beboy, even though I'm not big on the anime.
What you saw at the castle on that windy night ,and what you saw at the bridge last night .. how I smiled, never utter a word to anyone. If you dare speak .. I will find where you are .. And I will kill you. Kill you. I will rip you apart .. crush your bones And eat your flesh.. I will drink your blood. I will .. devour you.

i dont know which to exactly pick, but i think for my mom i would start by digimon.
while for my dad, since he loves action and a little fantasy, maybe final fantasy and rurouni kenshin would suit him.

I would show them like Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, anything Miazaki really. They are masterpieces and they might just appeal to them.

Well... anything by Ghibli and Miyazaki, could be also series like Haibane Renmei, Mushishi, Nodame Cantabile... even Death Note - depends on parents. My mom got in anime through Spirited Away and another Miyazaki's movies. Later she has shown some movies at school she works in ^^

My mother is always working with a computer and she's tired to use one so she wouldn't watch any anime on it.
My father can't watch the half of any show or episode before falling asleep so mission impossible.

Maybe some movies with a plot and quality animation, otherwise they would get bored.

One Piece or Samurai Champloo. They are the only ones my mom is able to watch. I tried to watch Excel Saga with her but she always asks stupid questions about it. I guess japanese humor isn't really that funny for "normal" adults. ^^"

I don't think I could ever make my mom interested in any anime - for her it would be just another cartoon:/ I'm not so sure about my father, but I guess he'd like somethin like Afro Samurai or Shigurui.

But my grandma... now that's a different story:)
when I was just a chibi shounen we used to watch all kinds of anime together:
JUNGLE BOOK: SHOUNEN MOWGLI (favourite)
TANOSHII MUUMIN IKKA
MITSUBACHI MAYA-NO BOKEN
CAPTAIN TSUBASA
MAHOTSUKAI SALLY
ANIME HIMITSU-NO HANAZONO
IPPATSU KANTA-KUN
SHIRO YUKI HIME-NO DENSETSU (favourite)

and many others;)
those were the days...

I bet my grandma would love Ginban Kaleidoscope & Haibane Renmei;)

Maybe
Death Note
Higurahi no Naku koro ni
Monster
Serial Experiments Lain
Haibane Renmei

But in my case I think it's impossile. My parents allways says You Are nuts or somethink. Why you still watching cartoons for children. Ufff...I'm glad now I have my own place...

Ksyss you are so lucky^^

I would show a serious anime like Rurouni Kenshin Tsuiokuhen or Wolf's Rain just so they could get over the "all anime is Pokemon and Sailor Moon" crap.

Will also say anything by Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli. Sometime back one of my parents (mom) sat down and watched Howl's Moving Castle and she enjoyed it thought it was a good movie.

For my mom I would show her Maison Ikkoku and Fruits Basket
For my dad I would show him Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Monster. maybe even Hellsing.
As for my step-dad, I would show him all the Miyazaki Movies.

Death Note and tell them this is intended for 14 year olds. Then Pale Cocoon, Eva. Then they will never call anime "Toons" again. Then show them Ghibli so they can show to their kids. Then AMV Hell :P.

My dad's always been into action and sci-fi movies like James Bond, Tomb Raider, The Matrix, and those 'out there' ones like Aeon Flux. So I'd probably start him off with Cowboy Bebop or GitS. My whole family enjoyed the sci-fi series Firefly, so either Bebop or Trigun for the rest of them.

I would go for Samarai Champloo for my Dad. I think he would get into the historical aspect of it enough to enjoy the show.
As for Mom, I would go with Aishiteruze Baby or maybe Sketchbook full colors, or maybe Ichigo Mashimaro (for the cutness factor). But I would definately stick with the more "realistic" and funny slice of life anime for her.

Or the new animated Aeonflux film coming out.

My mom claims she has a crush on the main character from Princess Mononoke. FAIL.

I think it depends on your parent. My dad would probably like Black Lagoon because he likes action stuff, plus it has Nazis and he's a World War II historian. My mom...I don't think she'd get into anything, honestly.

I would never try to convert anyone to anything for any reason, but if they voiced an interest I would recommend/loan them Cowboy Bebop. Nothing culturally overwhelming for a first timer, and it is an extremely well done and well balanced anime.

Father:
Something bloody, or Sci-Fi. He's a Treky, and we both love Star Wars, maybe Death Note, Black Lagoon, he might enjoy Gundam too...

Mother:
Haibane Renmei maybe...She can't stand any blood though, or Fantasy, or subtle intelligent works...She likes love stories, hot guys, and 24, any suggestions? She likes comedy too. I was thinking SZS xP

haha i tried to make my family watch howls moving castle when it was on tv...don't think they enjoyed it.
dad even walked out. though i realised dad just has a thing against animation in general...we were watching a scanner darkly and he walked out cause it was animation!
mum on the other hand, i may be able to get her to watch one of the more mature ones, or ghibli - she might like Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo.
but yeah both just have it in that its all just cartoons like what 7 year olds watch before school.
lol if/when im a parent im sure itll be the complete opposite - me making the kids watch anime =P

My Mom thinks I'm too old to be watching anime. But If I were to choose I would definitely show her Death Note considering she loves CSI and stuff like that. And maybe Full Metal Alchemist and Final Fantasy: Advent Children too cause they deal with serious issues and stuff.
