| The first anime I watched that wasn't on Adult Swim was probably Clannad back in December 2010. This was before I started using list websites, so I don't remember exactly which one was first. I do know that Clannad was one of the first five I watched (once again, outside of Adult Swim shows). I watched it on some random streaming website. |

| First anime I watched was Speed Racer... on a VHS that my dad bought. I didn't realize it was anime at the time, though, and just thought of it as another cartoon. The same goes for Pokemon, which was the first one I watched on TV. Watching Pokemon on Kids WB led me to end up seeing a random episode of DBZ (which initially aired in syndication on there before being moved to Toonami, where it ended up being much more popular). I remember the exact episode I saw. Krillin and Gohan were peeking over a ledge on Namek, watching Freiza and his gang threatening a group of Namekians. As a 9-year-old kid in 1997, I had seen shows like Transformers and Thundercats before this, and I had seen a little bit of violence in stuff like Power Rangers and whatnot (not to mention somewhat violent games like Doom on the PC)... but I felt like this scene was so much more brutal, and the enemies were so much more ruthless and intimidating. I had never seen anything like it before. I was hooked. However, despite this... I didn't actually start following the show until it started to be broadcast again on Toonami a few years later. It was then that I began to learn that this was a show from Japan... I'm not sure how I discovered this, but it led me to try and find more of this kind of stuff on American TV. I eventually stumbled across Princess Mononoke, which was airing on Starz. This was the first anime that I watched realizing it was anime, and boy... what a great first exposure to the medium. From there I would go on to watch many more anime on Starz, Sci-fi, Encore Action, and of course... Toonami. Sometime around 2001, I discovered the existence of anime I could download on the internet. I think my friend introduced me to it... and I remember him linking me to a fansub website for Naruto over AOL Instant Messenger. Naruto would end up becoming the first anime I downloaded off the internet. The rest is history. |
