Wow, you have no idea what character development even is if you think is just about whether somebody goes from depression>gloomy and back again. Development is about overcoming or submissioning to a character's internal conflict which entirely depended the thing you harp on about mental state. A person becoming positive again after a dark period is irrelevant, it's context behind it (i,.e the reasons) that matter. You act like you have some deep understating about psychology but than here you immediately treat Subaru's mental state deliberately reductive manner. You don't pay attention at all to what he thinks, but have the gall to pretend to know what talking about.
