I haven't seen any of the Berserk movies or series. However, I've heard that this is supposed to be the first arc in the manga, so, as I won't have time to watch Berserk before this one begins airing, can I watch this first and the rest later?

I believe this is a remake, so it should be fine to watch without knowing anything about it.

No you shouldn't. While this will cover the Black Swordsman arc (which is the first arc of the manga), that arc is only being covered because they didn't adapt it in the Golden Age films. That arc is only 8 chapters, then it goes into a flashback covering the Golden Age arc. After they cover the Black Swordsman arc in this new anime, they will go straight into the conviction arc, which is over 100 chapters into the manga and past the Golden Age arc. I would recommend reading the manga as both the 1997 anime and the movies skip important material from the manga, although the parts the movies adapt are done fairly well.

This is NOT a remake. This is the continuation of the series.

You can watch the movies or series (either's fine, I prefer the series thou) but the whole idea of what's driving the main character will be completely left out if you don't watch the previous content.

So, to answer your question - No.

I'm sure they'll give you a re-cap from what happened before.

However, I still suggest for you to to watch Berserk.

I recommend watching the original TV series

After the TV series watch the 3rd movie. And then wait for Berserk 2016 in summer

The 1st and 2nd movie does not have anything new. Everything it has was already covered by the original TV series and they skipped a lot of stuff. So, it is up to you if you want to watch it.

The 3rd movie however has few new things that was not covered by the original. The Eclipse part was better adapted in the 3rd movie than TV series

Just watch the original anime first.

This anime may start from the beginning of the manga (The Black Swordsman arc), but even if it does, they'll completely skip volumes 4-13 (The Golden Age) which is what the original anime covers. The Golden Age is Guts' backstory and it shows how he became the Black Swordsman, so it is very important to the plot.
So, watch the original anime first. Or, better yet, read volumes 1-14 of the manga, at least.

No you shouldn't skip, go grab the dvd of the original anime/movies or read the golden age arc of the manga if you need to catch up.

You can watch this without having watched or read anything before, since its probably going to be a great action-horror-medieval anime on its own right.

That said, the storyline in that anime depends heavily on what happened before, so if you want to be emotionally invested in the anime much more, you need to understand what happened to Guts in the years before that.

It supposedly continues from the movie, so it's kinda necessary to watch that first.

Edit: It's actually a sequel to the movie, and more indirectly the original anime. So it seems more like COMPLETELY necessary. No, you cannot. You can read the manga since I hear it skips tiny details, but it's a sequel. So. You don't have to. Yes, the art's great, the story's great, but it's doesn't seem necessary to do.

Factually speaking.

The manga will be completed sometime in 2080, depending on the release of Idolm@ster games, please look forward to it.

this is the continuation from the movie, watch those movies first then you are good to go. Some people cant get used to the old art from old anime.

I hope they make Griffith look more masculine in the reboot. the way he looked in the 1997 anime nailed it, not so much in the movies.

Yes, you can watch it. No, I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm not gonna say "read the manga" because I don't usually bother with manga myself, but at least watch the 97 anime. It's only 25 episodes.

I'm glad I've been reading the manga. I think I just finished the retribution arc after just starting it like 4 days ago. Hopefully I'm in a good place to watch this.
Don't believe the hype.

He's supposed to look feminine. That's the whole bloody point of his appearance, to completely contrast Guts'. The movie captured that well.

Amen to that. And if Griffith doesn't look feminine, I'm gonna lose my shit. It's really part of the ambiguity the character commands.

this, only this way you can able to understand berserk. The movie and anime is just sugarcoat with VA and BGM sound, made impact that not necessary. If you immers yourself, reading this series, you would feel the sound, atmosphere, even sixth of sense of how it would unfold.

Who cares if he's supposed to look like a girl. Still looks retarded.

Your reply gave me cancer. He's in your list of favorite characters (unless you're trolling of course), but you're being a sore ass about an important part of him, which is his ambiguous gender expression?? Okay.
