Think it has already been said, but aren't these basically just security stations? As in something they would have at any event? It seems like the only difference is they decided to give it an anime mascot . . . Although it is an anime convention.

I mean "safety first" is the catch-phrase of just about everything these days, from grocery stores to little league baseball, from the educational system to conventions. You get my point right? This is basically something they already had unless I am missing something.

@justalex Outside of the "safe place" these rules are not new and pretty standard for conventions. People just don't read the convention guidelines I guess. If you take the time to do so, you will notice almost all of them have a clause that is ambiguous when it comes to costumes or allows them to make a case by case judgement call.

Anime expo calls it "appropriately clothed" while anime north says "anything that may be disturbing or offensive to others" and anime central says their response team has the final say on the acceptability of any costume or prop. Sakura-Con says "reserves the right to deem a costume unacceptalbe" etc. etc. It's honestly pretty standard stuff.

Same with the rules on photography, although usually it's phrased in a way where if someone asks you not to take their photo's then you shouldn't do so, rather than asking permission. Asking permission is proper etiquette though when it comes to guests.

It looks like they've backed off the background checks, and are only requiring them of convention volunteers and staff now, not dealers/artists/guests/panelists/press/etc.

Momocon here in Atlanta has banned visible buttcheeks on women, and men going shirtless are asked to only take off their shirt for photos. They went gimp on us lol, probably in response to the huge outcry last year when a girl was harassed. IDK whether to be more angry at the outcriers, or the harassers...

I was initially perplexed because of the "politically charged" name but... That looks like pretty standard measures to me.If kids/teens/adults who get lost or make a bad encounter (because no, not every convention goer is a nice little harmless weeb), then it sounds good to me.

Would people be flipping a tit if those "safe spaces" were renamed lounges? I wonder.

@xrockxz89 welp, getting mad at the harassrrs for being douches is a no brainer, but what were the outcriers complaining about exactly? Cosplays being too revealing or the convention not being safe enough?

guess what? Kids can get lost. shocking, i know. And even Adults may need help.

Dude give me a break!

You act like there isn't already a system in place to take care of such matters.

And the video does NOT imply that these "Safe Spaces" are going to be used for kids who get lost.

Are you purposefully being ignorant? I even shared some of the course they offer which shows that's a focus of it. Do some more research before relying on a simple video.

90,000+ individuals attend. This is their system that's in place, just revamped.

They even updated today about it. " We are creating SafeSpace kiosks and other means for youth to report and receive immediate help. Significantly increased private security and LA Police officers will be present onsite" source

KIOSKS you're upset about KIOSKS. So you have a couple people behind some well placed desks helping people if needed, to help relieve the burden from other volunteers busy with lines and events. This is the end of the world.

Bitching about "PC" and "SJW" ruining shit. I love how people act like "safe" spaces haven't existed in some way shape or form. News flash: people have been striving towards creating "safe spaces" forever. I don't understand the backlash of "creating safe spaces." And amazingly, majority of people complaining about "political correctness" a) have nothing to gain from it themselves as already being a member of the dominant group. b) consistently partake in the degradation of of another group. or c) simply too oblivious as a person not in the dominant group to even notice it's significance.

yeah basically the convention's response, the girl who got harassed was not at all satisfied with security's response.

Sounds like Momocon's security didn't take the problem seriously enough. I've actually done security at a con (volunteer) and for me there were no issues so I'd wonder if maybe they didn't believe her or something.

So there will be places in this anime expo, where cosplayers who wear revealing outfits can't enter?
I don't get it. (Watched the video, didn't help)

Because none of these new rules and regulations are necessary.

just because you personally haven't experienced anything during anime expo doesn't mean other people haven't as well, lol, they wouldn't just add this safe space out of the blue. some problematic situation occurred that called for this feature to be implemented

Anime Expo has been running just fine for MANY years without a fucking "safe space"....

eh you don't have an all-seeing eye, you don't really know that. just because there hasn't been wide eyed stories on the news of some chick in a yoko cosplay getting raped by frieza doesn't mean there hasn't been individual problems within the convention

Like someone said earlier in this thread...when you give an SJW an inch, they will take a mile.

but then why exactly does the implementation of this space automatically have to mean that it's by blood thirsty sjw's that want to ruin everything, why are you angry when they haven't done anything drastic to begin with
if you choose to take this as a start of the addition of more sjw bullshit then that's your own problem to deal with? anime expo hasn't announced putting in any other things so uh, slow your roll

But the last thing I want is for this to snowball the way it did in the video game industry...

Now, I'm not worried about Japan because they don't give two shits about retarded SJWs....but I do care about American licensing companies that publish anime and manga Potentially being poisoned by these freaks.

anime expo made a small addition to their convention and you take this as an attack towards the entire anime industry?

We completely ostracized countless cultures and people in order to create safe spaces for "our" women, country and "rights". But here and now the anger manifest towards consideration of anime convention partakers.

I remember people overreacting to this policy and feeling like it was no big deal at the time. To me I thought it made sense to have better security and places for volunteer help at a con that is growing rapidly

Seeing as they had their largest numbers ever "Anime Expo: New Record Set With 100,420 Unique Attendees" as reported by ANN and I've generally heard positive experiences from people I know who went I guess it was just an overreaction by people.

Makes sense to have better security and places for volunteer help at a con that is growing rapidly.

Out of curiosity, anyone who went, did the safe space kiosks ruin everything? I saw risky cosplay as usual, I guess people were worried for nothing in that department too.

I didn't even notice those when I went. Seems like it was just any other day at a convention. No one really gets assaulted or hell even catcalled at AX anyways. SDCC on the other hand, well yeah.

It doesn't help to scream "SJW!!!!!!" every time someone tries to do something reasonable. It's reactionary and polarizing.

I mean, I get it. SJW's and there over-reaction, hypocrisy, etc... are bad. I'm hardcore anti-censorship, and you can't solve sexism with reverse sexism. But if you label EVERYONE who tries ANYTHING to address the problem as an SJW, then you're the one over-reacting and being irrational.

Maybe this is a crazy SJW agenda, but there is no evidence to support that.

Seriously, you people (both sides) need to acknowledge and allow for a reasonable middle-ground.

People who constantly whine and cry about "muhhh SJWs" are 10x more obnoxious than actual SJWs.

Like, no one is forcing you to go to any safe spaces. Suck it up.

^ This. I know it hurts your feelings to see people enjoying themselves without you being able to shit on them, but that's change. Be a mature adult and learn to mind your own damn business.
