Giant Top Header on the left side, leaves the right side kind of empty. Looks not really good.

Or maybe it's just my imagination.

It won't matter, but I second/third/hundredth the voting concept. It already appears clear that the majority would prefer the old layout, but maybe numbers would speak better.

Eeeeh? Internet sites are not under the same stuff a nation faces, even if the site was made in a country that was democratic. In the end, it's xinil's decision regardless of what others think.

Hit refresh and bam, new design. Nice!

I like the layout a lot better. More cleaner and crisp.

For some reason at work, it keeps trying to load something and the drop down menus just won't show up until it's done. Which is every time I hit refresh or click on another section of the page. So it sucks having to wait for a drop down to show up to click where I want to go.

Hopefully it'll be faster at home tonight.

My main complaint is the large banner. It's really way too large (especially when using a smaller screen like those on a laptop or netbook) and I would prefer it to be recombined with what is now the navigation bar, there's certainly room. If not, well, hopefully the size will be significantly reduced, though that would still be a waste of space in my opinion.
Also, I would make the drop down menus disappear faster after the mouse is removed. Accidentally moving the mouse out of the list isn't really a problem, the menus are more than large enough.
Other than those two things, I don't really mind.

I can understand putting the navigation bar up top but a pop-up only login option? It should be somewhere up there when you're logged off and shouldn't require an extra click. It would be nice if there was an option to switch b/w the themes.

"Demanding makes you look like a snot-nosed, ungrateful, little shit. If you're going to say something, offer some form of constructive criticism. Offer some form of suggestion if you have any, but voice your opinions without actually attacking Xinil. Fact is, like it or not, the guy worked hard on this, and this website. You have to give him that."

everyone who doesn't like it should really NOT write anything here ... for now (i mean senseless and stupid comments without any contributions to this discussion). i mean everything they would write is totally biased and doesn't have much ground and reasons.
get to know this new style people !
after a few days you should be able to make objective comments about everything regarding this sites new style. you will probably get accustomed to the new menu and at that time you will really be able to tell if its faster/slower/better/worse or whatever.
how would you be able to compare something thats online for like 30 minutes and something you know since you registered here? you can't ! theres no way that could work.
also i myself am actually having some problems with the navigations and kinda am on the "don't like" fraction, but i still am able to make unbiased comments and try helping out the site administrators to make it a better one. changes come and go. and its not like the sites style is going to stay like this forever. there are always possibilites to improve things and the community will take its part on that when the time comes so just try this new flavour until everything settled down a little.

- Club comments are not the width they should be.

Things I like:

-I like that the profile and the comments are wider... forum too.

-Bubbles - yeah, I like them :3

Question: Now that the forum has different width, the signature size will be different too?
This sums up my opinions thoroughly.

If not a floating nav, another bar identical to the one at the top at the bottom(assuming it doesn't slow the site down). There is a slight lag to the menus, but there are bigger concerns than that. Not everyone has a home key on their keyboard, and having to scroll up to the top is a bit tiresome. Going back to what Xinil said in regards to the MAL logo not being so large on other pages, I can get behind that. It's a start.

I'd also really like to request other themes/styles/colors/backgrounds/whatever the hell else you wanna call them that are native to the website rather than going through Stylish. I'm not a coder, so I honestly have NO idea how difficult this is, but wouldn't it be a matter of changing a few lines of code for color? If it's harder than that, feel free to ignore this. The same goes for giving people who don't like the new layout to swap to a new one.

As for bugs, there aren't any glaring ones from what I can tell at the moment. As stated by a few people, the menu lags a little bit. It'd be nice if this could be sped up. Also, when people log/in out, the bubble is covered up partially by the new menu. I'll keep my eye out for more, but that's all I can see at the moment.

I don't think it's a very good idea because moving the side bar to the top is simply a visual appeal. Many people who use this site have constructed their pages based on the old sidebar setup. This is kind of like being told we're going to Betamax after VHS rather than DVD. Sure, Betamax might have been slightly better, but what about the guy with 20,000 VHS tapes in his collection (or girl).

It seems more practical to consider enhancing the site with new options. For example, allow thumbs to be shown beside titles in peoples anime list (if this can already be done i am blind). Perhaps allow people to rate by the 10th of a point (7.6) instead of just 1-10 etc...

I would be happy if I can keep my quick navigation on the left.

This would make it functional for me.
I intensely dislike the dropdown menus and the fact that pending requests, messages and clubs all merge into one number. Its highly uninformative to me.
The dropdowns also seem pretty slow.

The side menu was useful, informative, and ... well. simple. It worked. It didn't need fixing.

If the quick navigation had remained on the left hand side I could work with that, because it would mean I could completely ignore the dropdown menus I dislike so much, even if between them and the logo they do push information down the page somewhat.

My only other complaint is that the site now feels too white.
Is there any chance that, if this thing remains as it is, we could get a darker skinned variant? Or dark sidebars, or have that pattern repeating (somewhat darker) all the way down a page instead of just stopping, or something?
The endless white makes it strangely hard to view for me, and I think its making my eyes hurt.
I don't know if it was the same before and somehow I never noticed it because of the sidebar, but now it just feels like theres too much empty white space, and it really does make my eyes feel somewhat strange :|

I do like the navigation bar, but the huge header is indeed an eyesore.

Wrote elsewhere:

My first thought was, "Whoa. New logo is ugly." Too big and gaudy with its metallic/reflective gradients, and the font itself just makes it look like something that was already unaesthetic during the '90s. I feel like I'm reading Animerica, or something. I do like the new navigation bar, though. And I don't really mind the new width of the About Me section, but this sort of emphasizes the need for MAL to allow people to customize the look of their page more freely, along the lines of myspace or livejournal. You can tell they're making efforts to spruce it up a bit, but it still looks amateurish.

If a decent variety of skins is on the way, I think this will end up being a good change. Personally, I prefer sites that look a bit more minimalistic and functional. I've said before that last.fm would be a good point of reference—if I could have a layout/skin on MAL that looked like the "Paint it Black" version of last.fm I would be quite pleased.

Thanks for making efforts to improve the site!

The new layout gives me a feeling of a middle-schooler saying "Hey guys, let's make one of those super-uber cool dropdown menus, which show and hide, and then a biiiiiiig logo, it has to be shiny, all cool kids in town like cool shiny logos with reflections"

ANN has a good layout (if you don't look at the ads): a small logo to the left and clearly visible tabs. (Currently, MAL's menus don't even have borders, they're simple very light blue rectangles on a white background, so they look poor.)

Dropdown menus are worse than simple menu on the left, but I don't dislike them.

But the logo has to change. I'd even prefer those Naruto logos from April Fools. Shiny stuff is so 2000s.

What if he kept the categories, but made a sort of "drop-down" style on the side. So you click the category and it expands showing whats in it. I personally think that would be better.

I enjoy the idea of being able to skin mal, on a per club basis, which can be controlled on a user defined basis, in case someone doesn't like downloading club Bg pictures, be great if we could see improvement and changes in other places as well, like the height of the blue strip above and separating posts in a thread, an increased text area for quick reply that is not absolute but relative, and maybe you could put in some interconectivity with AOL, WLM, Facebook, Myspace and whatever, like some forum sites have underneath the user's picture, in a form of contact card that each user can change the bg image of and style to their own choice...

furthermore I'd like to admit, the less clicks the better, it really is as simple as that.

C'mon, (some of you) guys, if you're going to pour down the hate, can't you at least include some constructive criticisms or suggestions with your posts? "Bring back the old layout" of "Let us have both options" won't really work, because the widths are different. If you want wider sigs/profiles, then that's already a problem right there because it won't display properly depending on what layout each user has on.

Although I agree that there might have been less complaints if Xinil had posted a thread asking for input on this new design before it was implemented and whatnot, I bet most of you won't even remember what the old layout was like after using the new one for a while. I mean, does anyone seriously actually completely remember what the old Facebook looked like?

Toadounet said:
I don't like changes.
This one is quite a good one though. It's clean, not as messy as before, but I miss the old MAL logo ^^
One problem - I don't know if it's the same for you - is that I'm always pushing the "My Panel" button, so it's a bit sad that there isn't a direct access to it. A great thing would be to be able to choose two or three links and have them next to the "Industry" link.

The "My Panel" section can be accessed if you just click on the MAL logo at the top.

Xinil said:
I think perhaps, on subpages of page (anything not home/panel), we'll remove the huge top logo. That way, for most of the site, we still get a decent amount of screen real estate. Decent compromise?

I think that sounds alright. :)

----------------

Some other things:

1. I'm also having some trouble with the pop-up login.

2. I don't really like drop down menus, but either way, I think more work can be done on them if you really want to keep them. The colours don't match well, and although I generally like simplistic designs, they look a bit too plain. I don't really agree with putting it back at the side. If you're going to do that, I think you might as well bring back the old menus. They were more intuitive.

For starters, I also do not like the new layout, but I will also say why.

I can say this right of the bat, because I've always dis-liked drop down menu's like these, and them being used on MAL will probably not change my opinion. In the contrary to that, I like simple menu's like it was before(Dont go "Get used to it", please, as said I dislike the drop down menu in general, not just on MAL, independent of layout).

The banner at the top, and the menu items are to high and thus look greatly over-sized. This should be easy to change, depending on how the site has been written it can be changed easily even through CSS(Having looked through old code, I think Xinil uses CSS for practically everything).

On the bright side, its nice to see everything having a little more space in topics and such, making it bit more pleasant to read larger parts of text.

I wont go state any opinion on rest of menu layouts yet, as that however, would be to soon. As I haven't even taken a close look through and given it some time to sink in yet.

Though as developer I have to add, to some that are posting they just don't like it, please, do not respond without actually saying anything more then just not liking it, your not helping at all, and this topic will probably be very long with constructive posts as it is.
To Xinil, I know how much work it can be to change the layout on a site, and can't imagine how much work it would be on a site like MAL where there are quite a few pages to keep in mind, which all should keep looking good. And it looks in my eyes, that this change has taken a fair number of hours to do. It is nice to still see such great support, thanks for that. ;)

While I enjoyed the Side Bar, I'm perfectly fine with this layout. It looks clean.

Might take some time to get used to, but aside from that, it's perfectly fine. I also prefer the new banner to the previous one.

I don't really mind the new layout. It's quite okay, I guess. Maybe the logo at the top is a little bit too large though (I use a laptop >.> and my screen is rather small)

I'm much more concerned about the loss of my "Dark MAL" theme :( White just kills my eyes.
