If you have watched Mushishi you know what the Mushi are and what they look like.

I thought it was an original concept and very cool to have creatures that most people cannot see, but are ubiquitous to those who can see them. They float in the sky and are everywhere.

But I also noticed that they have similar "spirits" in Ghost Hound, which also can only be seen by those who can see the "unseen world".

Unfortunately I can't find any good screenshots.... but I am wondering if the Mushi designs are inherently drawn from Japanese inspirations/traditional creatures, or if Ghost Hound ripped of Mushishi?

If it's explicitly needed I'll try to get some good screens myself, but not right now :P

I haven't watched Ghost Hound, but I would like to just throw something here.

I liked this answer on Yahoo Answers, so I decided to steal it:

In older times, it was a common belief that spirits or demons caused sickness (even in western civilization, we say "Bless you" cause in the old days people thought a sneeze meant something evil was invading your body, so they would give a blessing to guard you against it)

Yuki Urushibara (the creator) has little author's notes in the manga at the end of a volume, explaining what inspired each story. About the story "Heaven's Thread" she wrote...
"This is a story I thought of when reflecting on old folk tales my grandmother told me.Tales about how missing people were left upon a huge rock. There are similar folk tales all over, but most of them involve finding people in trees or on rooftops. They were usually blamed on Tengu or other spirits who abduct people."

About the chapter "A Banquet in the Farthest Field" she wrote...
"I lived in an apartment which looked out over an older brewery, and that became the model for this story. It had a nice atmosphere, but I had to move away, so now whenever I taste sake that's been strained through cloth, I get a very nostalgic feeling."

So yes, some of the things in Mushishi are based on old folklore and myths and legends that the author heard growing up, but some are more like the second example, where she based it on places she's seen or just a thought she had and it wasn't really based on anything (such as the Second Eyelid, it was just something in the story, not based on anything).

No, because the idea in ghost hound comes from the concept of astral projection. The Anime in a nutshell is what if astral projection was real? Mushishi uses concept of mushi as a storytelling device to drive themes or show the weaknesses of characters/human nature.
