When will it all end? Is it really that hard to write something without this annoying ass trope?
Whats even worse is that all these generic stories get anime adaptions........

Probably not anytime soon.
As long as it's popular in Japan, it'll continue I suppose.

it has and will always exist.

Films, tv shows, western cartoons, anime series, books, even video games will always have generic mcs that are either simpletons or gary stues/mary sues.

They're easy to write about, reach to a wider audience, and there is no fear that the studios will lose money since it's not a big risk.

Try it yourself.

Write a story where the main character is not dense and generic.

You'll find out if it's hard or not.

DxD, Otoshimono, and to an extent Testament have not dense mcs, so it is possible :p
Testament had a weak story tho :/

This trope didn't even start w anime, it goes back to the early days of cartoons

Don't forget anime was inspired by things like disney, many of which have lame main characters who end up saving the day somehow

But as someone who's not looking at the dudes in the first place, I still dgaf lol

We kinda have to thank disney for anime lol so even if that means some characters are dumbasses, it's worth it, especially when it's nothing new in the first place, it's not an "era" it's always been like this

Don't just blame the MC, blame the girls too for not making things clear for him. While yes dense MC is annoying, 8 of 10 harems i've seen so far have heroines who are simply too reserved, embarassed, or in denial about their feelings. It's both parties who are at fault.

At least anime doesn't declare all their heroine as a princess near the end :>

Or do they 3_3

Would it still be a harem if the mc can read the mood?
I mean it's be kinda awkward if he started saying:"Based on her actions near me, this girl is in love with me." I mean how the heck should he react.

it depens on the popularity in Japan. if the viewers in the Japan get bored of it, Generic MC, not MC, Generic Harem will be gone. they will stop making it because it's not popular anymore.

i'm guessing that kind of harem (generic harem) is popular right now in japan, while it's not popular outside Japan. probably that's why they still keep adapting and publishing it. well if that is really the case i can't even argue with it because in the beginning, Anime,Manga and LN are originally from japan. so it's kinda obvious if they only care of japanese viewers.

but...i don't really mind it. well, if it's only one generic harem series in one season, why not ? if it's two, three or maybe more, now that is a big problem.

"Generic"

This word keeps getting thrown around like it's supposed to make sense.

There are a lot of dense main characters out there, and I wouldn't have them any other way.

Yusuke Urameshi is a dense lead. He doesn't understand how others feel about him and that's why him learning about all that stuff after dying has impact. He still stays dense though, but not just about romance but about how a lot of people feel meaning the show can explore it further.

Gon is a dense lead. If he was all socially aware he wouldn't be the selfish person he is.

Ryner Lute is a dense lead. If he was all socially aware it would downplay his decision to outcast himself from society.

Grimgar's protagonist is a dense lead character. He doesn't really pay that much attention to other people. This makes his shift to leader more profound.

Mika from Iron Blooded Orphans is a dense character, and I like him that way. His denseness shows how straightforward and natural he is.

Dense leads have a use. Imagine if the protagonist new which girls liked him or why the antagonist hated him like almost instantly. Now the anime doesn't get the chance to explore that. Also being socially competent means you're not naive and straightforward. Naive and straightforward characters are very likeable.

Simon from Guren Lagann can be considered dense. He never understood how almost anyone felt in the show until it was too late, but that explored almost every character's struggles.

Ok now to tackle generic. This means that there's nothing inherently special about them. They aren't unique by any sense of the word. Ok you're probably throwing this at the protagonists you find boring.
Now think about the heroines.
You've seen them all. ALL OVER THE PLACE. You've seen them in giant robot shows. You've seen the in action comedies. You've seen them in all girl shows. Literally no one's standard personality is that unique. Nothing is really new, but the more you get to know the person the more chances they have of being unique and different.

Psycho-Pass's characters are not unique by any sense of the word. Those character types are literally everywhere. The energetic guy. The cool guy. The cool old man. They cynical young one. The energetic young one.

It doesn't matter, because the show's still good, and the more you learned about the characters the more you can see what makes them special.

Basically, if your first reaction when you see characters like Haruhiko from Phantom World in a show is "generic' just stop.

Protagonists should be like Shinosuke, a natural asshole so hard that even he gets a harem of his own even if he is against it.

It's rather hard to make a harem anime without a dense MC, but there are a few that manages to do it. Also, there are some novels which do a pretty good job at being a harem while not having a dense MC.

In the first place, harems are completely unrealistic, so there is no point in complaining that the characters are unrealistic. If someone wants something real, then they can always enjoy reality.

I think an anime with sex in it is called hentai.
And I hope the otakus you are talking about can't relate to those, the existence of tentacle monster otakus would cause a huge panic among the female population. Especially among the 1-14 years old girls.
