Ever since I started read and watching yaoi, I've began to hate female characters. If you read/watch yaoi how do you feel towards the girls?

I don't feel any differently toward female characters than I do males, and I've been reading yaoi for years. There's really no reason why liking gay romance/sex in manga should make you dislike women in manga.

oh, these little earthquakes

I think the problem isn't so much with yaoi as with bad yaoi. You know the type, in which any female character is turned into some kind of demon, or more probably is non-existent (which in itself opens up a problematic can of societal worms). I just don't read the ones filled with misogyny any more; the second my inner feminist alarm system starts going ALERT! ALERT! I begin to think about putting the book down. If you think that's an overreaction, you haven't read some of the insane prejudice I've read.

Try to remember the yaoi mangaka who don't spread the weirdo hate/invisible woman agenda, and analyse what you're seeing as you go - then decide if the anti-woman bullshit's worth wading through anyway. When I come across it, I tend to think it isn't.

To be honest I've never liked shoujo much anyway, and that was before I started obsessing over reading yaoi. I don't hate female characters in general, since there are some awesome ones out there, but I just hate the way shoujo mangakas portray (most of) them. Weak, spineless, cry easily, forever needing to be saved by their knight in shining armour. Plus, I don't know how many mangas I have seen which have 'this is the year I get a boyfriend!'. No, just no. Unfortunately the mangakas have also started to veer into trying to make women more 'assertive' but tend to just end up with 'mega bitch' which isn't any more enjoyable to read.

Well if your reading Shojo most girls in shojo manga are worth hating, I always thought it was funny how Shojo manga is normally written by women yet most of the time the characters are like vastly counter productive to the imagine of women, weak, not so good looking, always need a strong guy to look after them and can't do anything them selves and the opposite of that is like the strong will man eating whore, who bullies the heroine. Some times the shonen stereotype is more productive.

Nope but they just simply too many of them. Well, not that many but just compare how much of them with any yuri mangas out there. Those yaoi fangirls are just overdid it. So far Lilicious is the only scanlation group dedicated itself scanlating yuri mangas while yaoi ones have countless of them.

Indeed. It gives you unrealistic expectations that whenever you see two cute guys together, they'll start making out.

You're setting yourself up for disappointment!

It's not yaoi alone that brought you to this point, so no.
Sometimes there is a misogynistic element in some boys love/yaoi, and I don't think it's all healthy. The idea of jealousy and living in a man filled fantasy can lead you to improper thoughts about women if you allow it to. Still I don't find this what is labeled "yaoi misogyny" to be truly misogynist at all. But most an inner female competition and desire for dominant female gaze.

What is means is that there needs to be a balance, and allow for positive images of women to be present even when one is wanting to fill their things with images of men. And not forget one out of focus on the other, because it can sometimes lead to some really scary invisibility and images of women when not invisible.

This is why I'm for the equal dabbling of both things. Men got bishoujo moe from shoujo. Women can get female action heroes from male directed action shows. Shounen ai doesn't always have to be annoying to the man. For instant, the success of Axis Power Hetalia in both men and women. The same goes for Yuri, many women can relate to Lucky Star and other male directed things. Men can further be given overlapping cute and romantic shows and women more action political shows. We can bridge the gap between "shounen" and "shoujo" and "bishoujo" and "bishounen".

If you feel you're starting to hate the females in the anime and manga you watch and read, is it just the bishounen or in general? If it's the bishounen the females may not actually be well developed and deserving of such. It also may be a point of jealousy and desire to see less women. If it's in general it could also be this at times. If it's anything of the above it could still possibly be leading to something problematic. As you could be overly romanticizing boys love, yaoi, and bishounen characters.

All of this fandom is healthy as long as it doesn't reach a certain point of fixation in my opinion, and even then it's just an usual way of living life and thinking and I don't truly have any strong objections.

If you feel like taking a break, I suggest we both go watch Claymore. Or another male directed strong woman show.

Could you specify just a little bit? Because even I'm not sure what I'm saying and if it makes an inkling of sense at this point.

Female anime characters are always stereotyped into some annoying blob of loudness....or quietness. It's always an extreme and never balanced out. Once in a while I will stumble upon a female character I will actually like (Like Maka from soul eater) but those are few and far between.
I think Yaoi has to do with it (for me) because I want a love story without annoying female characters...plus, my porn is girl free. :'D

To those who think there are no good female characters, please consider watching/reading the following series:

Haibane Renmei
Ghost in the Shell
Battle Angel Alita
Claymore
Aria
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
Michiko to Hatchin
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Honey and Clover
Kino's Journey
Seirei no Moribito

It's no wonder you're going to have these sorts of views if the majority of your shows and reading material are bishounen related and contain silly female characters (VK, Death Note, etc). Branch out. Look into different genres. Good female characters do exist. Even if they are a little rare. I've found that more often than not some of the best ones are in seinen series. Hell, even something like Battle Royale contains some seriously awesome female characters.

tl;dr: you're doing it wrong, try harder.

To LucySky and other members who shared same views, just ignore those yaoi freaks. They hated all female characters because they are FEMALES, regardless how asskickingly cool they are. Those crazy yaoi fangirls will eat anything than have hot fujioshis f@%king each other regardless how shitty those yaoi mangas can be.

xD Okay, my first comment was a harsh on female anime characters. But I have a hard time finding female anime characters that I like. I have found some very good female characters that I enjoy watching, but usually it's more of the male characters that I like more. But, then again, this is only my opinion and probably doesn't mean anything to other people.

Good + Female? Does not compute. Females in manga/anime are eye candy and no more.

If you happen to be a REAL man like me and another poster in this thread, then yes. We know an arse should only be used as an exit and reading stories involving men licking each other insults our manhood. We're able to appreciate a topless, fully developed adult male, but we do not lust after them and think unholy thoughts, touching ourselves at night.

...In all seriousness, I refuse to go near yaoi. For one, I'm straight and the idea of two males getting it on doesn't do it for me. For two, it's (obviously) mainly women who draw stories involving yaoi, and they force their own values on the male characters they create. In the end, you get a team of ladyboys instead of men.

I was happy to watch Gankutsuou, aware that Franz had 'above friendship' feelings for Albert, and I was fine watching them have a touching moment together... but that's where I draw the line. Lesbians only, please.

Sorry I have to point out Matoko from Ghost in the Shell in a horrible reference, First of all she is barely even human, not to mention, Her being a woman actually has come into question more just a few times, On top of that she was designed to be perfect and is embodiment of the ideal of Übermensch. Oh and she's over sexualized and she's even a bit of a sex fiend her self.

A better reference would maybe be Dewnen from Apple seed.

I don't like 90% of the girls portrayed in anime/manga in general. They are always acting and looking either sexy or kawaii, and this is something very sexist, imo. That's why I avoid watching shoujo. I like shonen and other animes in which there are really awesome girls, like Higurashi noNaku Koro Ni and Claymore..

But despite that, I hate yaoi. Especially when the obsessed fangirls have their moment of jealousy when they feel disappointed. I prefer 10000 times more a het pairing than a yaoi one.

Honestly in Yaoi or shonen ai I usually hate the more feminine of the two charas there. EX. I can't stand Suuichi like at all. However there are girls in anime or manga that are equally grating (Miaka) so it doesn't really change to much in my opinion
I won't be fooled by a mere 3-d girl!!!

There is just as much stereotyping in yaoi: for example, the uke is almost always a bashful/clueless tsundere and the seme is almost always a loving-to-the-extent-that-it-is-creepy otter type.

I always wanted to play as Kairi, but never did get to. It would have been really awesome and I missed it. I was lucky to get a minor amount of anyone except Sora. Honestly, I was a little disappoint in that she was a little too damsel in distress for my tastes. A Disney Princess indeed.

It's no wonder Sora went for Riku. Sora has no need for damsels in distress romantically.
Plus Riku is much hotter.

(I'm not a Kairi hater by any means. Just fed up with her lack of ability to save herself in comparison to the other characters and muted importance in KHII. I cry everytime I see the final scene in Kingdom Hearts I.)

Is liking Yaoi Manga bad for you? No.

Is liking bad Yaoi Manga bad for you? Yes

Unfortunately the bad ones often outnumber the good ones. Fangirls will swallow them whole as long as they had hot-looking fujioshis than anything else. 99% of yaoi fangirls are no fans of real gays and that's why when they saw any yaoi manga had slightest hint of realism(in relationship), they will hate it instead.

I think it's a problem if you start developing hatred toward het couples. I've never read full out yaoi, though I have read a couple shounen-ai series like Gravitation, Only the Ring Finger Knows, and Time Lapse. I'm not really a fan of shounen-ai or yaoi, but my friend is, so I tried it for her sake. Anyway, I didn't see anything in the books I read that would dissuade me from liking het couplings, but I didn't feel like it was that much different from shoujo manga. The only real difference was that the couples were male. It was still just as predictable and unrealistic.

But considering I've only really read three different mangas, I am probably not a very good judge.

I'm a big fan of yaoi, BL, and I tend to pair non-yaoi related male characters together but I don't see it as a reason to dislike female characters like how some fangirls tend to dislike them because they are the love interest of their fave bishie who supposed to be with that other bishe forEVAR. If I do hate a female character, it was probably because her characterization annoyed me, not her "intervention" with my slash pairings. Or usually I support both pairings, the slash one and the canon one. Like I'm a huge Lelouch x Suzaku fan but I'm also a huge fan of Kallen x Lelouch and Euphie x Suzaku.

I'm a bandwagon whore

Can yaoi be harmful?

Yes! Once you start reading or watching them you literally can't stop!!
(Now I just stopped after 3 whole hours of reading some yaoi series)
Then it becomes really irritating when I try to watch or read some shonen anime/mana, I just can't stop pairing the male characters... But not only in the virtual world but also in real life, I think I might have started losing it... *sigh*

I have read Yaoi and really it has had no effect on me whatsoever other than feeling awkwardness to be reading it. I haven't read that much Yaoi manga but I don't understand what girls find so fantastic about it. Not that I have anything fully against it but it seems to mess with girls minds in a way that they begin to create up the most ridiculous boyxboy pairings with every anime they watch.

Therefore it's bad for girls in that manner. I don't think many girls like a vast amount of female characters anyway, the same with guys.. not many of them have a big list of favourite male characters either. Ofcourse not everyone is like that but it seems the majority of us are like that.

Anyway, i'm missing the point of this thread. Yes, yaoi messes with yo' minds!

Nope, in my opinion.
I read yaoi mangas occasionally - even my one of old friends in the phil. (i stayed there for 2years) likes yaoi.. and she's strictly catholic actually xD
i'm also more or less catholic, but i guess i'm more evangelic than catholic. (i know, it's weird. but i'm kinda forced into being catholic.. so idc)
i don't think being gay or lesbian is bad & i also think priests should be allowed to marry. but oh well, that's a bit OT again..

back to topic: i dislike yaoi-fangirls, because they mostly freak out about BAD yaoi mangas.. sadly around 75% of all yaoi mangas are pretty bad :x i mean, it's way better to look at "drawings" that portray sex than real porn (imho, again..) or magazines.. Dx i could never, ever read or watch real ones.. but i don't have any problems when it comes to yaoi mangas xD simply because i think it's "only" a drawing, after all.. :)

I still like female characters, even though I like yaoi. I like shoujo-ai and yuri as well,so that might have something to do with it. I'm a complete fujoshi in every single way and proud of it too.

I do think I've begun to dislike female characters a little bit. It's not disliking, but... liking less? That sounds better. I don't know. Female characters in normal manga are often half-naked, annoying or tsundere(I hate tsundere :'D). Though I have some I like, who are just good enough. Well, except for one. She's my fav.

I don't look at female characters any different then male characters because I like yaoi, my reason for not liking a lot of them are for completely stupiddifferent reasons.

There's one thing that I hate about myself that has sprung from reading yaoi: pairing straight characters who usually hate each other with each other. I have no idea why I do it and I am well aware that I'm not the only one who does it.
