I'm trying to watch Bakemonogatari and man it's hard. The animation is great but I'm constantly thinking about the time when I watch it. I think 7 years ago I could of watched this kind of stuff easily but now it's so hard to get into these types of shows. I just can't relate to them anymore. I managed to get through Prison School but that's because it's the only anime show that's made me laugh a lot.

I wouldn't say they're appealing so much as that they're just really easy to do.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

It's just to set a routine I think. When it's not the main thing I don't really pay attention to it. When you check something like Shigatsu wa kimi no uso, they're freaking 13 years old. The same story could happen to a 70 years old man just as well tbh... or at least the twenties lol

Wait, they're 13 years old?? Wow.
I've never watched it but I thought they were like 17-18.

I suppose they want to relate to teenagers as those are the most common anime watcher demographic. It's bit of a shame though, I wouldn't want to be reminded of school and hard work while trying to enjoy my free time watching anime. School, you can never escape it...

I wouldn't bet on this one. Anime is still really popular to adults in Japan.

Because teens/young adults are the largest anime watcher demographic, so what setting can easily relate to and appeal to them? High School.

why many anime has high school setings?
> easy to relate for everyone. they are the last time when everyone still threated equaly, at least unlike work setings. also it's still memorable unlike junior or elementary.
> cheap and easy to make. you can use one charater design and not feel wierd especialy daily shows. it's also very common trope so there is almost none risk on it.
> high school is last part of puberty which have big impact on personality. there is also many excuse to use that theme
> most anime target is teenegere.

yeah I never really understand why in japan culture most things revolve around highschool children. EVEN THEIR MOVIES ARE SET IN HIGHSCHOOL!
but I think it's like a cultural thing, since they have very strict rules and what it means to be an adult, maybe it's hard for the populace to accept or even fathom that an adult or someone outside of teenage years can go on a crazy adventures. BUT one must also consider the target market. most mangas may be read by teenage boys so they're targeting the biggest market for the biggest profit

I mean im not even in school anymore but I still watch shows like that and continually watch every Monogatari adaptation that comes out.

You must be pretty disinterested in School Themes if you cant get through a show because of it.

Also the High School theme is like a Superhero MC its easy to get the teenagers/kids to love it and relate to it.

it's not like the mainstream audience in Japan are highschool kids, or anything.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

Well I managed to get through two episodes so it's alright. I I turned off Shimoneta after 5 minutes... I'll try to watch another episode tomorrow.

That's why I'd never plan to live there, their culture is just too different.

It all started with Breaking Bad. I mostly watch tv shows now but I recently finished One Punch Man and I got back into Dragon Ball. I watched Prison School last year, that was pretty fun.

Easy and understandable plots can usually be written by using school as a setting, and lets not forget that anime's main demographic is aimed at teenagers.

Your example is Bakemongatari? ehh. Most of the series takes place outside of the school. It definitely doesn't classify as a school anime.

To answer your question because it's an easy and convenient setting to write. Also in Japanese culture youth is valued, due to their work culture, so its appealing for those who work to remember high school and such.. And its appealing to anime otaku who didn't have a perfect high school life. And it's easy to relate for actual high schoolers. A lot of reasons, really. Which is why its the most overused setting in anime.

Because in Japan, all the fun in life is kind of over once you start university. You have so much work to do all the time that there's not really a whole lot of time leftover to spend on some interesting storyline. In high school you have infinitely more spare time. So not only is it much easier to make an anime about high school, but there's also a lot more *fun* to be had in it. Or what, you want to see a 24-episode series about overworked college students studying for exams all the time? Sounds very entertaining for sure

That, and you know... the biggest anime demographic are teenagers. Go figure

But I don't always want to go for a quality series or supernatural/fantasy series. I like having some mediocrity so the quality series seems more whimsical.

I guess that make sense but for me I can do without any anime being set in highschool even though there are some anime that are set in highschool that I like.

Again, it's the target demographic. And also high school life is fun, the pressures of life haven't caught up yet and at least there's time do something..

What? You prefer watching a middle aged man filing up his bills and trying to deal with his receding hairline instead?

An anime with an adult protagonist dealing with divorce, finding a new lover and having to deal with lack of mobility in his line of work would be be far more interesting than typical shy loser teen in highschool.

Its probably what some people have said already which is that it can be relatable to most people. After all the majority of people who watch the shows probably have been in school and will generally know what its like. Of course there is a fantasy-like element to it where people can be like, this is the kind of life I want or wanted when I was at school. Other then that it would be down to the demographic which is probably be people between the ages of 13-25 as a broad guess/estimation, who are either still in school or remember what it was like to be in school before the soul crushing reality of the world kills it off.

I don't get why older adults are like "I can't relate to high school animu anymore"..........because it's not like you would suddenly FORGET all your memories from that time.....would you?

I certainly haven't.

Who can still remember their first crush? Their first date? That awkward progression into adolescence and accepting changes and losing things from childhood like friends or important treasures or the places you liked to play at?

I'm sure MOST adults can still remember these things.

It's like saying "I can't relate to the movie Inside Out because Reily was twelve and I'm not twelve anymore".

But nobody would say that because it's BS. EVERYONE has gone through at least one of those things Riley went through and they can relate to her because those important memories don't fade away into nothingness unless you're past 80 years old and/or develop Alzheimer's disease or something of that sort.

Absolutely true, this.

When I was there in 2014, no Japanese women wore pants. XD

It's true, and I don't know why people suddenly dismiss certain anime series just because they can't "relate".
"oh well this has never happened to me, so I don't think it's a good animu", okay well obviously this series wasn't geared towards you maaaaan -_-.

One of the reasons I still love peach girl is because her situations she deals with in high school I feel are quite relate-able to me, but even if I couldn't relate I can understand how these thing could affect someone if they were real.

There are a lot of corny ass high school series (same goes for any show, not just anime), but I don't think they're bad because I can't personally relate.

It just seems to be the standard to have most anime in high school setting. I guess maybe it's to make it relatable to the average anime viewing audience but I find it tiresome, and I wish that there were more series set in higher education settings or out of school in general.

Nothing bad about high school anime if they're done right. Usually they're comedies, romances, or dramas and those are done fairly well.

It's just that some anime have settings like post apocalypse that don't even need a school setting but it's there because the protagonists are teens like in Owari No Seraph.
“Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth. But the world isn't perfect, and the law is incomplete..." -Alphonse Elric

I think the setting is really overused, but honestly it doesn't really bug me too much. That being said...

Well, high school is the setting for starters. It was terrible, and some of the worst years of my life. I don't need any reminders. Especially when it sugarcoats everything and makes it seem like some fun happy place that people want to spend even their free time at. LOL, rubbish.

Secondly, variety is a good thing. Without it things can get predictable and boring.

Anime=entertainment for teenagers

Highschool make it relatable for it's target market.

Anime is not mean for grown up or adult. Anime is overall still immature type of entertainment.

Highschool, RPG fantasy world, mahou shoujo, idol they are all overused setting/premise but in the end, 'it depend on execution' is what really make the difference for quality.

But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist.

Highschool anime is typically created for teenagers and adult perverts. I'm not saying normal adults can't enjoy them because stuff like hey arnold can be enjoyed by adults.

I'm just saying your past the intended audience. Much like those grownass men who rant on how bad nick is now.

I like both ideas actually.

I will say it'd be cool to see a series that Dr Greo was talking about, especially since they're not as common (or not as mainstream). I think both have their place and both can attract a wide range of viewers.
