So I'm rewatching this anime, and I remember what made it so flawed, the direction.

In episode 2, for example, you see Ed and Al mourning, and it's all a sad scene and all, and suddenly, Winry shows up and it turns into a happy-go-lucky bickering about dinner, and a moment later, they're all chanting during their dinner and drinking happily. I can hardly think of any moment more jarring than this, well, except for episode one, where, instead of building the world, opens into the characters fighting a filler monster of the fortnight.

I don't recall future episodes were this unbalanced, but time will tell as I'm finished
What do you think? Did you find it badly directed as well?

The direction definitely struggles with keeping a consistent tone. But I find the direction solid for the most part.

Well, I would agree. FMAB's great, but it does have the issue of tone. FMA 03 was much more consistent in it's tone than FMAB, being consistently serious when it needed to be.

Well there are times when you need to be happy too. I think they made episode two that way because the boys were mourning about their mother's death but when they put the goal in their minds to bring their mother back they decided it was pointless to keep mourning for ever. And dont forget they were kids... So of course they would be always laughing and playing and they would be forgetful.... You know even when my grand mother died my younger sister kept playing so you cant really blame them. They were kids

FMAB suffers greatly from tonal whiplash, it happens a fucking lot and I hate it, FMAB can't even take itself seriously since a lot of the serious moments get ruined with a shitty comedy they shoehorn in the middle of it, it's like FMAB was made for 10-year-old kids, goddamn.

FMA (2003) is a lot more consistent in those moments, this one takes itself seriously and the serious moments doesn't get ruined with shit comedy.

FMAB really is a mid-tier shonen anime. Its carried by nostalgia. Gateway/new anime watchers dont give a sh*t about quality direction in anime as long as there's cool fights every few episodes

Yes, its tone was not handled well in the beginning parts.

The comedy and lack of a consistent tone is a big weakness of this anime. Together with the rushed start it makes FMAB overrated for me. Still great, but overrated.
