We don't have them (flies) in the first place.

How do you avoid them in the first place?

We eat the fruits fast, and the veggies are in the fridge.

The best way is to get a cat and train it to eat fruitflies. If this doesn't work you can always just resort to a jar of either vinegar or beer with a paper cone in it so the flies don't escape. Add more for increased effect.

I see the problem now... in light of the new habit of eating fruit the old habit of not tossing out the garbage until it is absolutely full has brought forth the flies... dang.

How many days do you limit yourself to? I may have been buying too much in 1 visit to grocery store.

We buy just what we need, 1 or 2 fruits at a time. Our tortoise eats the skins of the fruit too, so we have next to nothing in our bio-trash. We throw it out every other day, still.

Usually what you did works for me, but take it as a good sign if you see them. I take it to mean the fruit or veggie aren't heavily coated with pesticide.

Thanks this is pretty helpful. I can only go about once every 2 weeks. How often would you say you visit the grocery store in a week?

We visit the grocery about once a week. A great alternative for fruits (if you're eating them for the vitamin C) is cabbages. They have lots of nutrients, and last for a long time.

I keep my fruit and vegetables in the refrigerator/freeze so I don't have a problem with it, I rarely have flies in my house anyway.

I don't think I've ever had to deal with fruit flies...like someone said earlier, eat the fruit, and keep vegetables in the fridge.

We eat them before the flies even appear.

I never had this problem.
I don't buy much at a time so I run out quickly though.

You have the right idea, but wrong method.

All you need to do is get a small bowl and fill it with apple cider vinegar. Then place a few drops of dishwasher detergent so the flies will sink in.

You don't need a cover with holes or anything. That just makes it harder for them to get in the bowl.

No plastic bag, no fruits, no soda.

Just apple cider vinegar, detergent, and a bowl.

Erm, I don't really understand the problem.
I keep most vegetables in the fridge, the dirtier ones (potatoes, carrots) hang in bags on the balcony - but I don't care much, since there're packaged and, well, they're dirty anyways, and are this way before I buy'em too.
When I keep fruit for some time, I cover the bowls with towels. And I try to leave them in cooler places, less populated by insects.

But maybe we don't have that many of them because of climate.

Go to Home depot, buy some Raid, and spray your entire house with it. No more flies!

I once had fruit flies grow from my orange peels thrown in my trash can. Damn bastards were everywhere!

I have a bowl with some food to bait them to land on it then put a lid or cover on it once they have all settled down and carry them outside to be freed.
