Mary's clichéd backstory sucked a bit of fun out of this episode, but I'll forgive it if the next couple episodes work well.
Don't forget.

Damn Mary was similar to Manato but had the opposite happen to her. Pretty slow episode again. I'm not liking the pacing tbh

Seems Mary didn't have it easy either but at least they know the reason behind her behaviour.
The question is will she become less stoic as their cooperation progresses.
It was nice to see her laugh for ones tho.

Damn Mary ='(

I didn't expect that Mary had a history like that. She prevents to use magic during battle because she doesn't wanna run out of MP like with the white goblin.

Glad that we found out about Mary this quickly. I guess the way she acts is understandable. Still quite bitchy sometimes XD Like "what did u eat for breakfast?" "Food" lol

But the cracks in her wall of sternness show how cute she really can be. Her apologizing to Moguzo was cute and her rejecting the offer for having lunch showed quite the cute side of her. I wonder how high her level is in comparison to the main guys? I mean she went into Dungeons and stuff.

I want to know How long have they been here tho? It's seems like they've been here for ages.

And Ranta...ARE U FRIGGIN BLIND!! Yume's oppai are perfect sized!

well made.

GREAT episode overall. i don't want to say the pace is so slow, because for me, it was like they were putting the details into it or more like A-1 Pictures is taking their time to make this anime....
Marry's past was predictable to me after the first half ended. i knew she was hiding something and it was really predictable...and finally! i knew it! she is not that kind of person....THANK GOD! i seriously want to see her with her cheerfull and happy personality :D

This means that Mary is on a way higher level than the others, she has lots of experience and knows whats ahead, if she shares some of her knowledge then they'd be able to progress faster and then you could all stop complaining about the pacing :*

Well I'm glad Mary's backstory was explained, I didn't expect it to happen this episode honestly. I can now accept Mary's, what I used to consider irrational behavior as her reasons for acting the way she is is reasonable so Mary's a-ok with me now!

Another nice episode with lots of development. Now that we're halfway through the show I assume it'll start picking up which would be nice to see but I've been pretty cool with the slowness that's been going on.

What makes Mary logical??? If she's truly sad that her previous party got massacred then why is she cold towards her current party. Since she's the most experienced in the party, she's supposed to help them instead of refusing to cooperate and refusing to discuss their roles in the party. Mary is a bitch!

Being social is not a prerequisite to being a priest. Each individual character knows what their role is, they just want to know what Mary's role is. Mary had a traumatic experience that she's clearly not over and she rather not explain to a crew she just met why she is the way that she is.

Mary does her job well, they're just too inexperienced to see it. Not a single thing about mary is bitchy. Antisocial =! bitchy. I'd be pretty annoyed too if I had to deal with big mouths like Ranta all the time. And she does work towards keeping her current party alive, that doesn't mean she needs to be all buddy-buddy with them.

She's a healer, not a front-liner and she has limitations to how much she can heal, so she only heals the injuries that actually impede movement or can lead to more serious issues. She's also learned her lesson from her last party that it's not a good idea to get too attached to people that could die at any moment. Emotions just impede your ability to make the right choice. And Mary learned that lesson with her last crew. Her experience is what made her logical.

The difference was that she wasn't the leader. So she didn't put herself in harms warm to protect the others. She over extended herself to keep the others too comfortable. So she has terrible case of survivors guilt because of the missteps from the previous group's leaders.

The problem there is if she discusses her past. Then that "incident" will come up. I don't think Mary is over what happened. Haru and the rest at least had each other. Most of her party was killed. There was no grieving process her fellow group. Most likely the few remaining members went their separate ways.

Everyone is bitching about the pacing. But I've come to enjoy it. My only gripe is that the pacing + the episode count will = unfinished mess by episode 12. I'd love for a season 2. But i doubt it'll happen unless this show gets 10K BDs per volume and 50% LN/Manga surge in sales.

Haruhiro's reaction to Ranta's loudness and annoyance pretty much sums up mine to Ranta. I hate that brat! Just die already!

I believe Haruhiro will grow into a fine leader for the party.

Well, that backstory about Mary should justify her current behavior. She really was different in this episode tho; I liked that. Suppose she'll open up to the new party eventually.
Mary is indeed beautiful. And she'll be even more when she'll start smiling again. Hope to see that soon.

Btw, I miss Manato a bunch. T_T

Great episode, even if the development is fairly quiet, the plot is also very detailed as to the feelings of the characters, Haruhiro facing the dilemmas of being a leader and even Ranta showing your jealousy, it is also possible to understand Mary's personality, but I believe it will take some more time to her loosen up with new companions, I look forward to continue watching the anime ..

That scene where they were walking down the alley had some of the worst animation I've seen in a long while, simply atrocious. Actually, the novelty of the series itself is starting to wearing thin for me. While I'm ok with the plot moving slowly, i don't feel like the characters make up for it nearly well enough to compensate for the lack of progression and this new Mary is not any better.
I'm hoping there'll be something in future episodes to spark my interest again because I was enjoying this quite a bit at first.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

^ This guy gets it.

I will also add that the "she's supposed to help them" line is pretty naive. She's the odd one out joining an established clique, and you expect her to tell others what to do because she is more "experienced"? I can see how well that will turn out *rolls eyes*

Mary has her priorities straight- conserving her mana so that she can keep her party alive. She healed Moguzo's open head wound first instead of the DK whining over a scratch and demanding to be healed before the tank. She was understandably pissed at said DK.

And she was not asked to "cooperate" - she was being criticised, which she is understandably sensitive about given her past trauma. First, the party is openly wondering why she does not heal their every scratch during battle. The spotlight is put on her- "Maybe it's your healing method" - what, it's all her fault? She is told she is "set" in her ways, another way of saying uncooperative. Then she is told she is "different" from their previous priest (who likes being compared to others?). Unfavourably too, their last priest was a "perfectionist"- meaning she sucks in comparison.

Try this on any healer in any MMO, or any other player actually, and get ready for a ragequit.

Another really slow episode.... Pacing is a huge issue with this show
On a side note I liked Mary's backstory since it explained her character
Other than that it was just the same old... killing goblins and talking :/

When I started this series I was extremely meh about it, but now that I know how the show works and kinda know what it's doing I think better of it. It's a fantasy adventure story starring awkwardly human characters (seriously, the whole 'should we wave hi' scene in the tavern was too familiar)

Although everyone is trying to do better at being friends now, I did notice that at breakfast the boys got a whole table to themselves whilst the girls had just a bench...

Haruhiro realizes some weakness with everyone and Mary even realizes it when he helps and makes a suggestion to Moguzo.

Yes she is high leveled but she needs to realize that this crew is young and inexperienced.

I'm just curious if they start to go out on harder missions if she's going to stop them or not, knowing full well the dangers that are ahead.

I can easily see them going after some Kobolds.

Not really a fan of Mary but she's better then Manato, I'm still so happy he's dead.

It's satisfying to see the group improve and get better fighting goblins. Haruhiro developing into the leader role nicely.
And we find out more about Mary and why she is like she is.
Wonder how the remaining episodes will play out.

I actually liked this one a lot! The first scenes with Ranta going crazy over Yume and Haruhiro were hilarious. Also, we got to know why Mary is the way she is now, which was interesting. Predictable, but not less endearing.

This was pretty interesting episode with things slowly getting better for the whole group with Haruhiro becoming a better leader slowly and also the Mary slowly getting more situated with the group. The first part was super funny with Ranta getting in Haruhiro's face wondering what was going on with him and Yume. It was also cool to see Haruhiro starting to watch his party members more and seeing what is needed to make their group stronger. We finally learn more about Mary and her past and now understand why she is the way she is now. It will be pretty interesting to see how these next episodes will go now that they know of Mary's past.

I guess I am the only one who enjoyed this episode. I hated the other episodes because of how different it was from the light novel but this episode was pretty good to me.

It is quite annoying in every thread we have people complaining about the pacing, maybe it is just because I read the light novel but the slow pacing doesn't annoy me at all because I know in the future when the really exciting stuff happens I am going to enjoy it going through every single detail.

If you hate the show just stop watching it please the complaining about characters and bullshit is so annoying why do these fictional characters piss you off so much? Everyone says Ranta is a piece of shit and I agree with that but it is a anime and he isn't going to die soon you might as well either get used to him or just drop this.

Here's the problem. The party was used to having a priest as a vanguard but Mary's fighting style is different (which is understandable). Now, the party is confused since they are noobs and only know one type of priest (tank type priest). What annoyed me the most is that Mary knows that her party members are a bunch of noobs. When she was asked (nicely) about her role in the party, she should've just made it clear to everybody what her role is instead of being a bitch and saying nothing about it. I'm not saying she should dictate everybody how to do their role all I'm saying is that she should've at least told them how she fights.

i'm fairly certain they have completely different animators for different projects. It's why their works are always so sporadic in terms of quality. We go from complete shit animation to wtfbbqholyanimationsogood.

Manato's method was more wrong than it was different. He put too much risk to himself when he should have been at a distance. There is nothing tanky about wearing cloth. Also, fighting with a wooden staff is silly at best, and suicidal at worst.

I don't see why mary needs to explain her purpose in the group. She's a healer, she heals people. They already lost one healer because of his own recklessness, they should know better by now that priests are not meant for the front lines. Someone even told them that priests are targeted more often than anyone else because enemies can spot them and will target them because of their healing capabilities.

If you're saying Mary is in the wrong for not coddling them because they lack any kind of common sense then fine, but I still fail to see how that makes her a bitch. Especially since she's trying to harden them during the easier fights so that they don't become too reliant on her when the going gets tough. And this isn't something she can convey to them without talking about the incident she's not comfortable with talking about.

I don't know why a key information was left out, but it explains Mary's choice for not opening up to her new team. She's been kicked out of many teams since the traumatic experience with her original team. A lot of teams didn't give her the benefit of a doubt so instead she was kicked out early which lead to her apprehensions towards getting to know her current team and opening up. If you look at it from her perspective, why should she interact with them more than necessary if they're going to boot her off anyway?

Anyway, I really love the art style of this anime. It's very pleasing, but it's disappointing how light on content the story and animation are. I really wish they'd go in-depth on the battle tactics and character interactions. Those things would really flesh out the story and make it more enjoyable to watch. As it is, I don't have a good outlook for the future of this anime adaptation. Just going to be an advertisement for the light novel. That sucks because I prefer animation over text.

Lots of derps in the art quality this episode. Geez get a grip of yourself A-1. That's two episodes in a row.

The episode was outsourced, i guess A-1 cant keep up with this and Erased in one season.

Actually Erased last 2 episode also outsourced, i guess typical A-1 in middle of the season.

Well, at least Mary is starting to open up a little to her new party. It's understandable that she doesn't want to get too attached and make them complacent because of what happened to her old party. She was basically a Manato in the past.

Then again that's exactly what the party needs at this point of time. Haruhiro learnt a thing or two about how they actually work in combat instead of just rushing in to go for a dogfight and expect to be healed. In a way they're also lucky that they learnt their lesson early in their journey as opposed to Mary's old party who had to learn it later on the hard way with three deaths.

Once they learn the value of this, they can surely grow stronger as a party. I can also see Haruhiro becoming the leader of the party now; not only is he more composed but he's also focused and has the ability to rally the party together.

This episode was fantastic at fleshing out Mary's character. What has impressed me completely with the series is the attention they put into characters emotions and reactions. While Mary's backstory may have been predictable, her emotions felt real and her growth in the group (albeit small) felt moving. She has easily become one of my favorites.

For those who are complaining about the slow pacing, I don't think that is going to change further on into the series and to be honest, I hope it doesn't. The slow pacing and extra attention to building the characters and world is what makes this show worth watching. There are few fantasy series which really engage you in its world like Hai to Gensou no Grimgar.

At this point, waiting for the next episode is going to kill me which was something I was not expecting at all.
