Aren't they underrated?

I know the 'internet debates is lolz special olympics retard!!!' is pretty common, but why?

I find text to be very useful for having debates. I can examine exactly what the person (and I) said. It's right in front of me. If I misunderstood someone, I can re-read his comment or he can quote exactly what he meant. It's more organized.

You can also take your time, maybe a break of a few hours of even a day and later approach the topic with a calmer mind. You're not under pressure to come up with an opinion immediately.

What do you think?

Well,yeah,you can take it more..slowly.

Though the level of the debates can be rather low as well people are not exactly keen on admiting the faults in their argument.

Keyboard debates aren't actual debate. People can cowardly hide behind the keyboard using tone texts. I can say type something, and tell you that I meant something else. There are just typing tones, the only real debates are arguments where you call out on each other's bullshit immediately with quick communicative manner; Skype calls for an example.

Yeah, in 9 of 10 times people just can't admit that they're wrong.

There's nothing to be gained from them.

All that time you spent debating with some retard online could have been spent playing Persona.

Yeah,exactly my sentiments.

Well they're slower, but the other guy could start copying stuff from other websites.

Depends on the person you're debating with. You can gain a lot, or you can lose a lot - brain cells I mean.

Doesn't matter if the opponent copies the next if it has a valid point in the argument.

Sounds to me like you haven't met intelligent people, or just didn't bother discussing with them.

And yes, I had plenty of interesting discussions here on MAL.

Anonymity makes it easier for people to be honest, but it also makes it easier for people to be dishonest and deceitful.

You can definitely have some interesting discussions the net. I think I just gain even more if I'm discussing with someone face to face.

But it's not really his opinion.

Depends on topic. But generally I think most of them useless.
It's not the case with professional and specialized communities.
There we can have a fair amount of useful debates and info.

Well on the internet there's Googling so people can take the time to back their stuff up, but personally, I never saw any point in debating on the internet

They can be pretty fun most of the time. People having a fit at each other, maximum hate and lots of rage.

A good debate should not end in one person winning or loosing but it should end in both parties reaching a compromise of some sort.

If you think debates are for winning there's nothing for you in actually debating.
