We are excited to announce the addition of a new feature to our forum: an ignore user function.

At the bottom of the Forum Settings page, you can add users to your ignore list. This will collapse the added users' posts on the forum, hiding them from your view. Please note that this is different and separate from blocking users.

Our forum moderating staff highly encourage you to use this feature to ignore users who get on your nerves, rather than replying aggressively and/or abusively.

A few notes:
  • You can only block a maximum of 30 users. We're hoping that this number should be sufficient for most users.
  • Ignored posts can be expanded by clicking the faded header.
  • Quotes of ignored users are still visible. This is more difficult to hide and may be considered later.

This is the first new feature of a series of planned changes for the forum. Please look forward to some more changes (that many of you have been requesting) coming up soon.

Once again, I'd like to note that development on MAL is a team effort: multiple projects are being planned, developed, debugged, and executed simultaneously. So we'll have updates for you on other areas of the site coming up soon as well. We appreciate your patience.

Yay! Less people will pick on me now :P

Sadly, I have to get used to "My Watched Topics" being pushed to the left now since I click it very often.

Thanks for the hard work.

Ah, looks like it works pretty nicely. Just for testing though, I don't really dislike anyone here enough for actual practice.
I'll take any new features we can get though, provided we don't lose any old features in the process.

Can the forum setting putted in the bottom instead along with search feature? I'm accidentally keep hitting ignore topic instead of watching since it is pushed to the left.

Not a person that ignores people, so I will have little use for the feature, but it is visible that some would benefit from it.

nice way to deal with the low priority reports based mostly on being annoying or baiting
anything which simplifies the mods work can allow them to focus more on other things
and it's also an interesting feature for the users

What the.....

xD this is supposed to be a feature to emulate the reports, so in that sense they're assuming a report of a staff member would be ignored

or have a counter on the profile to show how many ignored the user (or would it make more sense to have it next to the posts?)

This seems a bit silly. The point of a forum is that you interact with a large group of people, and sometimes you aren't going to like those people.

If anything, there should be a form where you report users for abuse rather than something like this. People are going to use this just because someone makes a snarky comment towards them one because people are babies who can't handle jokes.

There is, but the people here never use it. Your not knowing about it is a good example of that.

tried it on some random people, collapsing posts is a lot of fun
maybe it could be further improved by adding a little "ignore" link into each post (next to the "report" ?), to make it easier to ignore someone while not having to go all the way into the forum settings

@Zazie122
"If anything, there should be a form where you report users for abuse"
the "report" link is already there for that

"People are going to use this just because someone makes a snarky comment towards them one because people are babies who can't handle jokes."
yes, this is what this feature is for, to reduce the number of people sending reports for those same reasons (i'm assuming here)

Again, barely anyone uses the report button. This was likely implemented because people often get into arguments, which creates more material to moderate.

Were we responsible with what power we've been given, the forum wouldn't suffer for it. Clearly we're not.

Also, I loled at "My MAL-announcement : ignore users".
It really feels very much for me. :)

But I am not so sure a max. of 30 users is enough ?

Yes, but between some of us users there will never be no interaction possible, that'd be somewhat worthy.

A nude beach's purpose is that we can feel free to enjoy beach and sea nude.
I may still want to wear shoes if the sand is too hot, or for glass shards, sea urchins and the like ...

People are going to use this just because someone makes a snarky comment towards them one because people are babies who can't handle jokes.

Well, that's their own problem. Who wants to be childish will not be kept from it by missing features.

No no no, it's different. You're reporting an individual forum post, rather than the account itself. There's no "report this user" feature -- it's "report this post".

Fair enough, that's plausible. I still don't agree with it.

B-But forum arguments are fun! I don't know why the mods are so against them, since a lot of them are just banter and aren't actually malicious in any way (maybe).

And some people are going to dunk you and your bare feet in the ocean and hold you under for a few seconds. That's what a forum is.

it isn't that much power anyway, it affects only the ignorer, and if abused the ignorer is going to self exclude him/herself (the 30 limit also prevents from ignoring everyone)

i rather think this won't work well in some cases, like baiting, cause someone who gets baited is unlikely to even think about ignoring the bait
this will really work well with constantly annoying posters (or well known baiters), a bit less with cases like the new accounts created only for spam/bait

a further upgrade of this feature could be: being able to limit the ignoring to some specific forums (like some posters being annoying only on some shows and not on others, for example)

There is a blank report feature under "Help" on the menu bar. You can utilise it for such circumstance.

That's not really obvious though, nor is it probably prioritised. Given the speed of the MAL staff (nobody in particular, just overall) I doubt those harassment reports get dealt with on a timely basis.

I'm not condoning bullying or harassment, but people seem to think that everything negative said about them is harassment in some form but eh.

Freaking finally! but can they still see out posts and topics? I ask because of the second note. If you ignore someone but can still see what they post by clicking the faded header, then can they do the same? I'm just not sure how it would worked on the ignored user's end.

@ Hachiko75

How it will be handled here, only time/experience will show.

However, from all other forums using standalone forum software I know, I see it handled so that ignored users can still see your posts, and typically they get no indication that they are ignored by you. (can't message you, though, so there's a strong hint)

There you would also see their messages when quoted by someone not-ignored.

You can however use the "ignored" status to be recognised by custom scripts which would then change appearance of ignored posts (get rid of totally) or even replace quotes with "here be ignored stuff" or whatever you want.
(Foxreplace for Firefox can be used for this)
