I'm sure a thread like this has been created before. But truly, I would love to see something like this brought forwards. What is the most generic anime? That would raise light to the question of what is generic in anime? Wouldn't the anime considered generic also be able to be recognized as original, because of the fact that its pure faults and flaws seem to set a standard as to what is and what isn't generic? I dunno. Maybe I'm a little too high to be on a forums site right now. But I do believe that this is quite the interesting topic, and I'd love to see (both see as in recognize and watch) the anime you all present. Thanks.

I'm not entirely sure how, to be honest. I guess it's the mix of various things that I feel like I've seen in other anime. You've got the blonde guy who's a perv, there's panty shots, giant robots, a lot of the characters have odd colored hair (like Chidori with her blue hair), a main character who ends up in situations that the girls think are perverted but he doesn't
, and the artstyle (I can't really point to anything that looks like it, but it definitely feels like something I've seen before, aside from the lines under their eyes (which is a nice touch, it makes the girls (and even Sagara) cuter)). But there's something about the mixture of all of this that just feels charming, and well, right. I am only 2 episodes deep, so that could very well change.

Oh, in that case, I think it's when a show is executed well even if it uses the most basic cliches.

Wouldn't say there's a 'generic anime' rather a 'generic *insert demography/theme* anime'. Like say a generic romance shojo, generic action shounen, generic school battle harem, etc.

I can't think of any anime I've seen that I'd say is super generic. Probably because I cherry pick like 90% of what I watch.

These are generic. myanimelist.net/anime/30296/Rakudai_Kishi_no_Cavalry

myanimelist.net/anime/30544/Gakusen_Toshi_Asterisk

Fantasy school echhi anime. These and the harem/slice of life anime takes up most of the seasonal shows.

Not saying generic is always a bad thing btw.

Yes, I agree. I still mix up Asterisk and Rakudai Kishi with each other because they're so similar.

Nogizaki Haruka no Himitsu

It's about a rich, athletic, meek, popular, intelligent, internationally recognized, cultured, clumsy, beautiful otaku waifu, and it stars an average high school boy who happens to be the only one who understands her through romcom ecchi hijinks.

I'm genuinely interested to see if anything can top that.

That was written in 1998 and adapted in 2000, so I'm not sure if it counts as generic. Then again, I'm not too familiar with romcoms pre-2000s that aren't Rumiko Takahashi, so I can't say if there was something else before that set any trends.

Comparatively I still think it's way better than stuff like High School DxD which are just as shitty and generic but are also packed to the brim with borderline hentai levels of fanservice which they censor so people will either get ATX or buy the Blu-rays.

If you're still mixing them up after watching about half of their episodes then you are not paying enough attention, because even if they share the school-battle-type setting and some tropes they are still a lot different, especially when it comes to the characters and fighting.

Rather the question should be "which Anime is unique". Nowadays there are many Animes which appear generic just because there are Anime in the past who were similar in terms of setting/tropes. Just what I don't get is why the school battle harem type of shows get heavily criticized because of that. Obviously in other genre/type of shows there are also a lot of repeating stuff.
I'm feeling thank you

Generic shows (i still enjoyed):
A-Channel, the generic slice-of-life school comedy with no defining features.
Nanatsu no Taisai, a recent generic battle shounen.
Seiken Tsukai no World Break, a generic highschool magical battle anime.
Jitsu wa Watashi Wa, a generic urban-fantasy romantic comedy.

I liked the part where the female lead is not the generic high-spec girl Tomoe, but an unemotional rei clone Julie. And the first girl didn't win, but was eliminated almost from the start. That alone makes it stand out among the rest.

Maison Ikkoku & Ah My Goddess probably popularized the trend of co-ed dorm living romances, but I can't be too sure. Love Hina is a generic harem, with the generic loser protagonist, generic moe 90s-2000s artstyle, and has the typical childhood promise generic plot.

If you watched or read Rumiko Takahashi's past work it is extremely generic. her style of humor always takes extremely naive and dumb characters and repeats the jokes but changes the plot and situation. There is always a huge emphasis on misunderstandings and the main implied romantic female lead is always dense. The problem is this one doesn't really add anything to the formula the predecessors did before it. Ranma 1/2 was a martial arts parody and a subversion of the ideal japanese family, Maison Ikkoku is a slow building romance, etc. Kyoukai no Rinne doesn't do anything new with the formula and the characters stagnate too early on in the series.

Lol yea I realised qhen I was writing but then again it is generic! SAO's second half became fanservice oreimo-like bullshit, SnK is your general shounen without any character development (only things that's "new" are the big fucking titans which is not even that creative) and well Tokyo Ghoul speaks for itself

For magic battle highschool harems, I'd say Absolute Duo, Gakusen Toshi Asterisk, Rakudai Kishi No Cavalry, Hidan no Aria to name a few off the top of my head.
There's also that abomination called Kuusen Madoushi Kouhosei no Kyoukan, which was not only generic but just plainly fucking terrible at the same time.

Seraph of the End (1st season) was a 10/10 example of genericness too.

You know what's generic? your response is. It should be put into a frame and captioned "generic bandwagoning SAO hater". There's more to second half of the 1st season of SAO than Kirito-Suguha romance. Oreimo definitely doesn't have swordfights or tentacle rape.

By the way, Oreimo is rather non-generic, but I've only read the novels. In fact, all the media about otaku culture tend to be rather unusual.

generic is usually used in opposition to original, so something which reuses previously used themes, and uses them in the same ways they got used before by other shows
it's a subtle way to say the generic show did copy other previous shows while not adding nothing new in it
it can also be seen as "lack of distinctive traits", since if you were to remove all the "common" themes from a generic show, nothing would be left

"Wouldn't the anime considered generic also be able to be recognized as original"
differing opinions on what is generic may change based on the previous experience of the people making the opinion, for someone who just started watching animes anything may look new and original, the more experience you have and more shows will start to look generic to you

personally i did find psycho-pass 2 extremely generic, cause after having watched the first season i couldn't find anything new in the development they made there, it felt like a bad copy of the first season
but that may have been cause to me the main villain did look like a self-insert character :/ (even more than makishima, who at least was a bit bearable)
