The depictions of blacks in Baccano! border on racist. Either the manga-ka didn't know better, or the designs were chosen because they fit the period of the story, Prohibition America. I'll be generous and assume the latter. Buddy (rhymes with "Muddy") Waters in Uchuu Kyoudai is a decent African-American character until they decide to run the little strips at the end, for kids no less, where the characters are all portrayed as animals. Buddy, unfortunately, becomes "Buddy Gorilla." Again I'll chalk this up to the horrible ethnocentrism of the Japanese, but most of the Americans I know who were following this show were incensed.  There are only two black characters I don't consider racist caricatures in anime. One is Dutch in Black Lagoon, and the other is Lewis in Blood+. |
