Gundam SEED / GS Destiny have many epic scenes.

But for an whole anime, I would have to say "Kanon" (2006). I have never seen anything better. Fantastic stories, great humor, tearbreaking drama - a true masterpiece.

Yeah, Gurren Laggan has quite a few epic scenes and is pretty crazy (in a good way), but the story is too simple.

Am I the only on that sees the irony in someone named ParadiseLost saying GTO is epic?

I have spent too much time not reading this post.

If they made a Battle Tendency Anime or OVA, I think it would fit the bill. Heavily armed chariot races on the backs of mad zombie steeds against Aztec vampire demigods with the antidote to the poison currently circulating your bloodstream as the prize as the Nazi army encroaches from outside. I do think so.

Self-promotion time!

To quote myself,

Leuconoe said:
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is epic in scope and subject . . . This isn’t the debased ‘epic’ bandied around on imageboards. This is the real deal. It may be the first time I’ve encountered an anime which has seemed truly Virgilian - I’d say Homeric, but I think in its awareness of war’s victims, its solemn stateliness and its focus on empire(s) the Legend is much closer to the Aeneid than the Iliad.

Another blogger also wrote on the subject of epic anime, and his post is an interesting read (though I disagreed with him on some points).

The criteria I personally use are (a) the anime must be more than 75 episodes long (so that it takes more than just a couple of days to experience it), (b) the anime must have massive scale (like the fate of nations at the very least), (c) the anime must have a sense of humanity.

'Humanity?' I hear you ask. Well:

C.M. Bowra said:
[the epic] gives a special pleasure because its events and persons enhance our belief in the worth of human achievement and in the dignity and nobility of man.

I realise, however, that most people just mean 'really good' when they say 'epic'.

I'd probably have to say Monster. Higurashi was epic at times, especially the ending, but it started to get dragged out a bit in Kai. I'm also tempted to list ef - a tale of memories as epic as well.

Yeah.. That's another good one.. One of the best horrors for me.. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni & Higrashu no Naku Koro ni Kai.

I tend to seperate my standards of classifying an anime as "Epic" by it's type / genre..

Kanon 2006 / Clannad - So called "Best harem"
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni & Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Best of horrors (For me)

Death Note is now overrated.
I remember watching the first episode when it all started and watched it till the end out of interest not just because someone told me to try it. Now everyone's like WATASHI WA L DESU! A year after it came out...

I know the term 'epic' has turned into a ridiculously subjective term in this day and age, describing anything from Paul Thomas Anderson's next movie to a Youtube video of someone killing themselves on Halo 3, but come on, some of these anime are not epic.

Epic should at the very least include multiple locations spread out around the globe, the passage of time, and ever-increasingly big obstacles and encounters for the hero. TTGL, Juuni Kokuki, Princess Mononoke, Mobile Suit Gundam, yes?

Elfen Lied? COME ON. The only thing epic about that is the amount of pointless decapitations.

Justify your decisions guys please. Dont just blurt out nonsense like Tenchi Muyo or something without ever appearing again in this sordid thread. Make me believe. Make me trust you. Show me a light at the end of the tunnel. Save me. Pay for my child support. Be my Richard Gere and take me off the streets.

DO IT.

You have your point of view, each has its, if i prefer Elfen Lied isn't becouse is violent(certainly is a own part of anime), but the story of it.
There are many who say the opposite and many can have the same opinion. This are preferences. I don't think your is a right way to judge, each is free to decide whatever he prefer.

Like others on here, I'm going to say Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The action, the soundtrack, Kamina vs Viral, and the way they fought on galaxies......it was really an exciting show.

Also, Samurai 7 was quite an adventure. There were samurai, mechs, and spaceships...It actually came together nicely.

Yeah, but its like me saying black is white and no one can tell me otherwise 'because its subjective'. Well no, its not. Epic has a dictionary definition, how about we just go by it? Otherwise this thread is just another in a long line of threads compiling lists of the most random selection of anime in the world. (well, Japan)

I think the criteria I threw out there a few posts above is pretty lenient to be honest.

I've chosen those anime becouse in contrast to many anime trivial, they have interesting story(original may say) and partly the characters interact with each other expressing their emotions in captivating way.
