This is my first forum and i thought of dicussing about the variety and also the cliche protagonists in anime (both female and male).

I guess i will start off with my first anime ever- Naruto. So, i basically started of Naruto when i was 8 or 9 if i can recollect. I watched the anime from the beginning and Naruto shippuden was already out, so i was ready for dedication on this. I got recommended by my cousin and enjoyed it a lot, but for some reason i only watched that and nothing else because i never even thought about other anime. I only started this year (actually getting into anime properly) and Naruto corresponds to Shingeki no kyojin -Eren. They correspond and i'm just using these as an example. They are loyal, caring, protective and... overpowered.

My main aim is just to point out they have some sort of power which they involuntarily get, which i genuinely hate. Especially how Naruto is even powerful because he is the reincarnation of someone (spoiler i won't point it out). I would really prefer if i see someone is not overpowered, but is gaining power from own efforts. If Naruto and Eren didn't have their power, it would be so much more better IMO.

Anyway, what's your opinion of an ideal protagonist and types of protagonist in anime that you find cliche or unique?

i don't care about characterization TBH. what i give atention is character development.

some character can be annoying as fuck in the beginning/dislike as hard as i can. but if it developed well, i will like it.

as for type, there are too many things to list, but mainstream one deasnt make automatycaly bad, and non mainstream one automaticaly good. i look all of them depend on execution.

if you're talking about action's protagonist, I'd say I hate OP'ed protagonists from the bottom of my heart, doesn't matter if they achieve the power from the start. Good example for this is:
- eren (who as you said received a power to transform into titan)
- kirito (who basically is a NEET hikikomori who only play games all day long when beta testing so he knows more about the world)
- bell cranel (I mean, he's considered a weak person, but he managed to be the key person to defeat that gigantic boss? come on. what've he been doing before the series started?)
- etc

when talking about non-action protagonist, I hate overly open-pervert characters and lucky bastards like, too much for me to write.

Ideal protagonist imo, is so far, hikigaya hachiman, kidou eita and oreki houtarou. I like their life principle somehow that avoids women. I mean, too much male protagonists these days looking for women like it's the most important thing to own in life. seriously?
Cooking is like fapping.

It can be lots of struggle when you're in the middle of it. Sometimes it gets hard and boring. When you're about to finish you're filled with excitement. Then finally you get to enjoy the result of your hardwork. Sometimes it doesn't meet your expectation. But most of the times you feel like you're in paradise and your struggle were not in vain.

But then comes the messy aftermath you have to clean up.

He's great too imo, especially during the later chapters. He could lower his perversion a bit though.

When it comes to the ''Hero, saviour, defender of the world MC etc...'' that we see everywhere in anime then I love me some Tragic Heroes or Anti-heroes archetypes.

He is pretty much my favourite Tragic Hero in anime

There's what I call Antichrist Superstar.

This can be a protagonist or an antagonist. This is a character who feels rejected by society and tries to overcome it/destroy it/replace it. It's an archetype that relies on questioning ideas.

I find the Moral Hero to be pretty boring. It can be done well if it's mixed with Innocence Lost like in Medabots, or if the heroism is addressed. If it's just a special person who decides to be moral then it's boring.

I also love the neurotic, weak type like Shinji from NGE or Yukki from Mirai Nikki.I felt like these didn't do enough with that archetype, but it's interesting to see it. The fact the character isn't fit to be a hero adds tension.

I said overly open-perverted. I don't have any comment for straight characters, but the type to talk dirty and tease girls anywhere and anytime are what I'm talking about.
