Well Violet Evergarden almost had no plot but still it's visuals and character development did the trick. So it's a tough choice for me.

Maybe I'll still go for the story.

Katanagatari does both, so I choose...Katanagatari.

Depends on your defintion of visually stunning, because artstyle is pretty subjective. Some people will prefer an anime with a simple artstyle but that's really sakuga-heavy,while other people will prefer an anime that looks more detailed but has less actual animation.Artstyle kind of takes a backseat when the anime gets me really invested.

There’s a lot with both factors so it’s not necessary to debate the topic.

A great story, but both together even better.

Visuals are nice and all but if it’s a shit story with shit characters then it’s a shit anime.

I like both but I would prefer a better story than stunning visuals.

If it's a great story I don't care
about the visual that much.

honestly sometimes I'm in the mood to just see something visually stunning so I don't mind if the other aspects kinda suck.
I do prefer a good story though.

A great story is most important for me.

I think I need both, though I lean more towards a great story.

I can get over shit art, when the story is entertaining to me. However not the other way around.

That doesnt mean I don't care about pretty visuals - I do. I esp. love the use of bright colors. But that means nothing, if the story/characters bore me to death.

I prefer that the work has a great story, even if the visuals are not the best, I will still be able to entertain myself and stay immersed in the story.

Story is more important to me. Redline is a good example of a visually impressive anime with a lackluster story. 5/10

To be truly great a series needs both. But if I have to make a choice between great writing or amazing visuals, I'll pick the writing every time. At the end of the day, that's the mark of a good anime.

Great story, as long as the animation isn't fucking OPM Season 2.
But Demon Slayer fanboys will never get that

Neither, to be honest.. I prefer characters the most.. Them being interesting, enjoyable, relatable, or other..

both, more so the story to be frank. Shitty visuals can bring down a show just as much as a poor storyline.

Visuals on their own mean absolutely nothing but combined with stellar directing and sound design it can absolutely make up for a subpar story. I prefeer both although: characters > story and visuals.

Another one rises up from the depth of being finished...
Japanese animation is art. Books are art. Would you prefer a book which looks flashy and has beautiful illustrations, or actually a book with maybe bland gray name, but rich in essence, narrative, story and thought put into it?
My main grip with series like Violet Evergarden and Kimetsu no Yaiba. Nothing but beautiful hollow covers. The mass praising them does not care to even try to open the covers; they would find nothing. An empty space...

I think directing is more important than either, as well as the overall script. I think I value both the same, as I can’t sit through an anime with a mediocre story with fantastic visuals or an anime with a phenomenal story but bland visuals

I'm guessing visual directing is part of the former, then they're both almost equally important really.

I love me some nice visuals but without a story to hook me I may as well be watching fanart instead.

Anime that can totally smash both out the park are my cup of tea. Somali and the Forest Spirit is gonna be anime of the year!

why not both?
but seriously when the anime has a charming or decent character design i'm almost sold.
and i will always prefer a good story about visual effects.
