Sample size has shot up to 3000. This will be interesting to analyze. Most people were predicting that its initial rating would dip after AX. I wasn't expecting it to decrease much, but this sort of response is unexpected though perhaps not as unsurprising as it should be (given its enormously favorable response in Japan).

I think the most important metric to watch will be the score distribution and at which point it starts to stabilize. Right now things like troll votes are still exhibiting some sort of effect on the score (the number of 1s is .9% of the total, which is a 3-5x as high as top-rated titles like Steins;Gate, Clannad:AS, HxH, or FMA:B.
Correct. In a couple of years when that sample size is great enough to generate a more appropriate rating( at least by MAL's usual user base, IE trolls/multiple accounts, several seasons being categorized as different anime like GINTAMA... ect.) , I don't see it staying over 9.1-9.15. I highly doubt anything topple FMAB's spot for an extended period of time anytime soon. But we'll see.

It's the first animated film to enter competition for best film at the London Film Festival, and I think most serious critics would at least consider it a more relevant artistic work to the field of animation than the Gintama movie, which is currently sitting at a 9.11.

Interesting. I guess I have no choice but to watch this thing today to see what I've been missing out on.

The only thing that amazes me is the ratings of "Gintama" it's ridiculously high and I've hardly seen anyone giving less than perfect score for things related to that franchise.

Keep in mind that the only available source is a bootleg DVDrip with shitty quality, subs, and watermarks that was meant for internal viewing only. I recommend you wait.

I get the impression that Gintama has somewhat of a "Cult" fan base.

Maybe Steins;Gate 0 could become the next big thing. Isn't S;G in the top 5 like for years now ?

I'm sure it will. I think I actually mentioned that on this thread several months ago. That could be a serious contender for #1 spot. Another I can think of would be a remastered and more mature Rurouni Kenshin. I could see either of those shooting up to the top and staying there for a very long time.

Depends on whether or not the licensor is generous or greedy, but yeah I hear S;G 0 is even better than the original, so there is that to it.

Looks like it's already here looking at Kimi no Na wa. Steins;Gate 0 is an easy choice as well since Steins;Gate is so highly rated, it has the benefit of being a sequel(generally only people who enjoyed the original will watch it), and will probably be able to avoid Steins;Gate's only flaw of a slow start.

Steins;Gate 0 is darker than the original ,so I wonder how it's going to appeal to the viewers.

this is better rating than what we have today, i mean gintama occupy half of the top 10 ,i don't know what so great about it .
i think an anime adaptation of lone wolf and cub(if there is going to be one ) would be among the top 10 best rated anime.

If they nail that Steel Ball Run adaption, when they get to that part of Jojo, then I could see that having 9+ since the manga is already 9+ and all the people who aren't fans of Jojo will have been weeded out by then.

Maybe when Re:Zero ends it will be above 9 for a little bit like One Punch was but slowly drop below to 8.9 or so.

I don't recommend it; I think it does a disservice to the film. But it's ultimately your choice.

Lmao actually I was downloading the movie in the afternoon, but it crashed when 100 MB or so was left. I think I will pass, shinkai movie in low quality is not satisfying. But the wait for 6 months. :<

I just did the same thing, but my computer did not crash like yours did XD. It was definitely held back by only being in 480p, but you could still tell it looked phenomenal, just like 5 cm/s did. It's like watching Freaky Friday + The Butterfly Effect + 5cm/s... but it is much better than any of those movies. Did it have some cheesy moments? Sure. But it was also really creative storytelling - and leaves a big impact (no pun intended for those who have seen it) for being 1 hr 46 minutes. I'd try to watch it again if you could.

I'd say it about as good as Samurai X's OVA, Tsuiokuhen.

Fucking trolls I swear lol. People are going to do the exact opposite too. I just saw one reviewer give it a 1 because "I had trouble masturbating to this film"

Well, Koe no Katachi's manga has an impressive score of 8.72
and its movie adaptaion is going to be done by KyoAni, the same studio that did Haruhi's movie which was once the highest rated entry on MAL..so my bet goes to this one.

I didn't even realize it was being upvoted so much until I saw it posted here and saw for myself. Accounts and other fakes like this https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bertowski It's suspicious why it would just shoot up by .3 score in a short time.

Well that now the worst reason I've seen for a low score. That even beats salt scores because at least those scores want another show to raise in ranking.

My question is, why take rating seriously?

Before a series even airs, thousands have already voted.

The rating system is a joke.

Koe no Katachi just shot up to 9.02.

Welp I completely forgot about that one. Not sure if the 1/5th rule has already been applied tho, so it might actually get even higher if it hasn't.

Edit : dropped to 8.99 now

Colour me surprise. :O This list looks so much better without gintama taking up most of the spots.

Imo more people need to watch gintama to balance out the cult. Maybe get the franchise from taking up like 6/10 top spots.

So AoT season 2 didn't even come close to reaching 9 huh? unlike Koe no Katachi and Haikyuu...Oh well.
Anyway, maybe AoT season 3..? and Code Geass R3, S;G 0, OPM2 are all strong contenders.

And maybe My Hero Academia when it finish airing since it has a score of 8.79 at the moment.
