I really want to watch Satoshi Kon's works; so out of his (I think) five movies and Paranoia Agent, what work do you think is his best anime and why?
Also, are you looking forward to see Dream Machine if it ever comes out?

On a sidenote, I'm planning to buy Perfect Blue something next week.

I love Satoshi Kon and his work, especially Paranoia Agent as it's my favorite and brilliant in every sense of the word. It's a shame that he passed away and that his last project is in development hell.

All of his movies are pretty good (I haven't watched the show Paranoia Agent yet), but Millenium Actress really stands out for me. The instances where the past and the present intertwine were really fun and memorable. A really nice movie about the life of one actress chasing an unachievable dream her whole life.
The OST is also very enjoyable.

Guys, if I want to get into Satoshi Kon's works, which of his works should I choose for starter? I prefer something a bit lighter so that I have an easier time getting into it.

I feel that your going into this after hearing so much praise about his work so it might not meet all your expectations, but everything he made is still worth the individual experience. I wrote a essay about all his works for my Japanese Animation class and it was the easiest and most fun essay I ever wrote.

To me, he's amazing, and someone we lost wayyy toooo sooon.

For me Perfect Blue is a masterpiece and his best work. As far as films go, it's a psychological roller coaster.

Not a spoiler, just my summary of his works shortened

Bascailly, just watch this man's amazing work he gave us before he passed.

"Lighter" in what sense?
Paprika or Tokyo Godfathers are a good way to start imo.

Perfect Blue to me is the best. Satoshi Kon to me was like a major pioneer for psychological thriller anime. I wish he was still around to make more.

Lighter in the sense that it's not heavy. :p I mean the one that's easiest for a beginner to get into his creations.

Yeah, I hear he's a f*cking amazing director. Unfortunately, at my go-to-retail-store for anime, I can only buy Perfect Blue, but I really want to see Tokyo Godfathers and Paranoia Agent. Thanks for that.

He's one of the very best and his filmography is as flawless as it can get.

@Tog25thBaam

I don't think it matters at all. I started with Paprika, which may not be the best one to start exploring Kon, but I enjoyed it anyway. Try following a chronological order, for instance.

Edit.- Oh, sorry, you mean lighter. Then Tokyo Godfathers, definitely.

I never liked Paprika.

Perfect Blue seems to be mildly chaotic for the heck of it but otherwise I liked it enough to award it a 8 as an exercise in insanity.

No, it isn't. Perfect Blue may be the closest and its treatment of violence and/or sexualization is very circumstantial.

Yep Tokyo Godfathers it is. I haven't thought of following the chronological release order, I will try following the order after TG. Thanks.

he's a good director, but paprika and perfect blue are still both total (yet artistically respectable) messes. paranoia agent did well up until the last few episodes.

millennium actress is really good though. it sucks that he passed away so early. :/

While I love all of his works, I am especially fond of Millennium Actress because I can't really imagine any other way it could have been done. Also Susumu Hirasawa definitely deserves credit for the great soundtracks.

Millinium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers are pretty straightforward and without the psychological fuckery. Only Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent are the ones you want to avoid.
