Natsume's Book of Friends is one of my favourites and that's considered shoujo. So no I don't consciously avoid shoujo anime.

I watch/read everything. I don't care about the demographic, I read everything, I watch everything. I don't care about the genre either (Well, I try to avoid shotacon and lolicon.)
People that exclude a demographic will miss a lot of good stuff. Because something is shoujo, it will not say it's all about romance. Their are a lot of shoujo that have good action, for example Lucky Dog 1 Blast or Akatsuki no Yona. Their are even shoujo without romance into it.

Shoujo X Romance. No yuri subtext or any kind. It ruins my mood.

I don't actively avoid it, but I'm not really a fan of the artstyle in most shoujo.

Sam here. I like shounen more. But the ones which are neither shounen nor shoujo are also interesting.

I used to avoid Shoujo, but after watching Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, I began to watch Shoujo, especially if the main female protagonist is a tomboy or has a cold attitude. Comedy plays the crucial part. The only type of Shoujo I avoid watching is when there is reverse Harem.

While as a man i watch and read more shounen/seinen i don't directly avoid shoujo/josei just because of the target audience, for instance i seem to have knack for finding supposedly more gender-neutral mahou shoujo ( it's the only genre related achievement i have on my graph.anime.plus , though that is partly because of the lower tresshold required ) but even those without the shoujo tag tend to be aimed at women (i know there must be a few mahou shoujo out there aimed at men and maybe even one or two that are aimed at men from a diffrent angle then fanservice)

It does feel really awkward a lot of times to be watching/reading something that as far as i can see is strongly aimed at girls, especially in public so like ecchi, shoujo or mahou shoujo are definatly genres i prefer to avoid watching/reading at public places like school or breaks at work.

The reason i rarely watch/read shoujo/josei is because the themes they usually cover don't really intrest me, while i prefer good plot in an anime (to the point i love ecchi while at the same time disliking unneeded fanservice(unless it's extremely good)or plotless ecchi) i do get bored without decent action, ecchi or comedy and apart from comedy i don't usually see those tags in anime/manga aimed at women, same goes for setting while i watched a lot of anime school tag i don't really like the setting and shoujo seems very very prone to using that boring setting, jousei doesn't but at the same time it's even less likely to have adventure and/or fantasy then shoujo

last note: while i know there must me a shounen/seinen mahou shoujo out there more complex then "ecchi/hentai with hot/cute magical girls" if you know one please tell me i'd be very intrested to try it out just for the novelty

I'm male and I don't actively avoid shoujo (besides yaoi). It's just that, usually, the shows honestly aren't my kind of thing. There are a few I've watched and enjoyed though.

I've found some really good series in the so-called shoujo genre. If it has a good story and good characters, target audience doesn't matter. Genre doesn't necessarily preclude those things.

I'd say some examples of "good shoujo" are Akatsuki no Yona, Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii, and the currently airing Ore Monogatari!! Then there's Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, which is really hard to categorize as either shounen or shoujo because of how it deconstructs gender roles. AnY, SSU and Ore have wonderful, strong characters. Though comedy is extremely subjective, I think GSN-k is one of the best out there.

In short, I'd say don't let genre limit your choices. If it looks like it could be interesting, give it a shot (yeah yeah, cliche).

Not replying with SJW junk, but if a man can't watch a good shoujo and maybe even cry a bit then he's not a true man. It's like singing enka as a man - being able to be both strong and sentimental, that is the essence of a real man. Even Freddy knows, and he's gayer than you.

Lol if a man says to be loving Ao Haru Ride, Kimi ni Todoke or fucking Say I love you he is gay as fuck sorry but yeah you're right there are some shoujo that are good for both genders like Skip Beat nd shit

I basically avoid Shoujo via my avoidance of shows that are heavy on romance. As will all media now, romance is in just about everything but I can deal with minor romantic subplots and harems are a non-issue. Romantic comedies tend to walk the line, falling on the "meh" side for me, more often than not.

So since Shoujos tend to prominently feature romance I, more or less, avoid them but occasionally one comes along that I really like (most recently, Akatsuki no Yona).

Nah it's all good. As a guy Shoujo sometimes has things I like that may not be found in Shonen. Some bad things too, but you just gotta pick and choose what anime you think you'll like based on characters/synopsis rather than demographics.

I'm not a lolicon, you're just projecting your tendency to lewd 2D characters.

I used to avoid shoujo like the plague back in the day. Gave it a chance with Peach Girl, and I thought it was terrible. Gave shoujo a second chance with Kimi ni Todoke, and now I'm a sucker for those cheesy love stories. The cheesier the better.

Mmmm... cheese. *drools*

This season,Red-haired Snowhite is one of the better anime of the season,if not the best.

Quick note, romcoms =/= to shoujo, there are lots of romcoms aimed at guys and not necessarily harems too. You probably know but just for clarification~

Also I like both, a good work is a good work regardless of demographic.

He says he does not avoid anything, which is a contradiction to him avoiding being a faggot.

I am a female and I really REALLY don't enjoy shoujo animes/ mangas at all! I mean back when I was a teen yeah I enjoyedsome of them because of the romance and whatnot. But now that I am an adult, I prefer to watch things that have more storylines than just love and trying to get a guy or a girl!

Hmm, I tend to avoid shounen series that emphasise romance (especially ecchi & harem stuff), but sports and mecha are among my "must see at least one ep" category so it depends on the content :)

Actually I'm more careful with shoujo series these days because unless it's a romcom, I'm likely to get frustrated by the insecurity stuff and other boring tropes.
