Sentai Filmworks announced at their Anime Expo panel that they have acquired the Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes) anime series. It was also announced that Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry) and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (When They Cry 2), as well as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei (When They Cry Gratitude) have been licensed.

In addition to the anime, Viz Media's panel announced plans for the release of the first three volumes of Legend of the Galactic Heroes light novels in North America. The first volume is set to hit shelves on March 8, 2016, with the other two coming later in the year.

The original light novel series of the Legend of the Galactic Heroes series, written by Yoshiki Tanaka, follows the rise to fame of two militant rivals, Reinhard von Musel and Yang Wen-Li. In 1988, it won the Seiyun Award for Best Japanese Long Story and received a 110-episode OVA adaptation, animated by Artland and directed by Noboru Ishiguro. The anime series continued its production through 2000.

As for the novel, I may check it out sometimes since the OVA is too long for me

Excited about this, but I probably won't buy it unless it becomes available in eBook format.

Not to mention that Sentai Filmworks licensed the anime for this series, among other rescues (like Higurashi)

How ironic. It was only a couple of days ago that I watched the "My Conquest is the Sea of Stars" movie.

I wasn't planning on watching the entire 110 episode OVA anytime at the moment, but you know what? I'm probably going to purchase those DVDs once they get released.

This is something nobody saw coming!

If anybody would've told me about 4 years ago Legend of the Galactic Heroes (both novels & anime) would be licensed in 2015, I'd think they were joking or either not grasping the concept of business.

What a world. I'm speechless.

Hm, tricky. I feel pretty conflicted about this. I would love to read these but I don't know how I feel about reading the first three volumes and stopping there.
I think it doesn't have enough of a fanbase to make this release a significant success that would prompt them to keep going until the end. I'll still buy these and hope for the best.

Also, seeing this reminded me of that announcement awhile back about a new LotGH show. I haven't heard anything since but somehow connected that to this. As in Viz assuming that the show might become relevant in these following years with the new installment? Perhaps that's just a stupid thought, but oh well.

I feel the same way. Since the first 3 volumes are on the way, hopefully the rest will become available in the same year. But that might depend on how much it'd sell.

That is exactly the case.
"The Legend of the Galactic Heroes will be released from Viz Media's Haikasoru imprint. Haikasoru has the first three volumes scheduled, starting with volume one in spring 2016, and will release more depending on the success of the first three." - Viz.

More Logh circulation in the world and in the US is great news. I guess i'd consider reading them depending on the price, but as others said their is a real chance of the entire series not being translated which is worrisome.

It truly shows you the power of Logh that it can get licensed over 3 decades after it's initial release.
