How does your family act towards your otaku-ism and the shows you watch?

I just really wanted to see if there was anyone else like this out there, my parents absolutely despise anime, don't wanna let me collect figurines from the anime, and like never take me by the local bosco's to get more manga (I have to do most my reading digitally) and just all around hate my hobby saying it's a waste of time. And my mom is always like "Anime to me just seems like something for little girls!" Or my favorite "Your to old to be watching that stuff, grow up!" And my Dad doesn't really say a whole lot about it besides always changing the subject when I bring it up. I just kinda wanted to make a small topic for people to rant about how their parents/family treat their otaku-ism, or 'Nerdiness' as they call it. If at all possible post some funny experiences related to their behavior towards it. One time I tried to get my Dad and Mom to read Nisekoi (For my mom.) and Tonari no Seki-kun (My dad.) My mom only read a few pages of Nisekoi saying that the story line was predictable (Heh, that's what I thought at first.) Complaining about reading backwards, and asking why they would suddenly start yelling at each other (Obviously they hate each others guts.) And just claimed he didn't like Tonari no Seki-kun, saying he didn't find it funny at all, and that he couldn't follow what was going on.... Sigh... Well I've also added a little poll so give one of them buttons a click. And btw a lot of people are misunderstanding me, I am not referring to myself as an otaku, I merely using the term that gets used towards me, and people like me, alot

That's why I can't get my cousin into anime, he assumes it's all packed with sexual stuff, or 'hentai' as us otaku call it

They used to think it was childish, but then I showed them Tokyo Ghoul and pointed out how much they enjoy animated Disney movies in an effort to fire their logic back at them. Since then they haven't really cared all that much

Oh ya, anyone got any good recommendations for an anime to show to my parents? It would have to have like ZERO questionable content in it, wouldn't want it to be a romantic one either... and it would have to be some what normal... hmmm

My husband doesn't like it. Says the anime culture is bordering on a cult. And I get his point, after seeing people who collect manga and figurines, and have favorite characters on wallpapers, t-shirts, avatars, phone cases etc. Or people that compare real life friends with anime characters, when those friends have no idea what they are compared to and couldn't care less. Or people that can't talk about anything else than anime and manga. He is like "I understand you have a hobby, and that's fine, but don't shove it down my throat." He doesn't like the "too much drama". He doesn't like the exaggerations in fanservice and hentai (too big, bouncy, almost sparkly boobs anyone?). And he doesn't like that you get waaay to attached to some characters. I am a quiet, closed (I wouldn't say otaku, because I'm not THAT obsessed), anime watcher :). And he is fine with it, as long as I don't waste too much time on it. You know, everyone needs their thing to relax. I'm watching anime, he plays video games. I know that sometimes he can play the most violent games, and I'm fine with it (for me even Mario might be too stressful). And he knows that I watch all yaoi that I can find, and he's fine with it (it's interesting how the hate for yaoi from a friend, opened for me a whole new world, because I didn't know about it before he complained. I should thank him one day :D). I'm still trying to watch things that might make me squee, when my husband is not around, because I might get overly excited. I prefer to flail and jump around when he is not here to see me :D But that's not always possible, especially with my voice-crushes surprises, when they play a character in an anime and I didn't know about it (Miyano Mamoru or OnoD anyone?)

I told my parents a couple of times that I'm watching "Japanese cartoons" (they don't know what "anime" means, and I doubt they remember after I told them), and they asked "Aren't you too old to watch cartoons?" (I'm 27 and live apart). I told them "Well, there are cartoons even for adults you know?" And they thought I watch porn :| So I gave them Death Billiards. Mom loved it. I don't think my dad watched it (or if he did, he never commented on it). I wanted to show them Death Note, but they won't cope with Ryuk and Rem... I don't know if a could find anything else for them to enjoy.
(wow, this became a long post...)

Of all the series you could've have shown them, you choose nisekoi!! Seriously? Not saying its a bad series but, you should've shown them something a bit more mature don't you think? Like death note, monster, full metal alchemist or attack on titan?

Honestly, if you keep showing those type of series to your parents, you can't really blame them for thinking all anime is for kids.

So I don't blame the parents here, I blame you. Don't get me wrong, everyone has different taste and from looking at your list you're the type that like light hearted series. But if you really want them to get off your back you need to take my suggestion and show them one of those series I recommend I guarantee you their opinion on anime will change.

Out of the list death note is my #1 pick, if they watch that and still think alll anime is for kids, just call it a loss and move on.

Not many know I watch anime and I plan to keep it that way. Where I live, anime fans and their "rub it in your face" type of behavior has caused many to form a negative opinion.

My parents really don't care too much, though I don't think they understand that I'm not just watching "kids" foreign cartoons. I do remember my mum walking in on me watching Attack on Titan during some gorey moment and commenting saying "I thought cartoons we're just for kids" or something of the sort.

I recommend Monster if you're trying to get your parents to watch an anime.

Americans eat up mystery/drama/thriller type television shows, and Monster is a lot better than most of the live-action American shows within that mystery genre.

On topic - My parents don't know I watch anime. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't care if they found out though. I don't think they would think something off-base like "lolz cartoons r only 4 children"

Death Note is really good (even if the quality of the show drops after a certain something happens), but I would be a little bit hesitant to recommend DN to my parents. I think Ryuk and the supernatural aspect of DN would be weird and off-putting to a lot of older people, whom most would probably want for something to be totally "realistic". In the end though, it would probably still be pretty high on the "recommend anime to parents" list lol.. Probably Mushishi as well, to be honest.

Definitely agree with this. Death Note is a great gateway anime for teens and young adults but for parents... Not so much. You really don't need to show death and guts and edge to prove that animation has a larger scope than many perceive it to be. If I was somehow forced against my will to introduce an anime to my family, it would most likely be a Miyazaki movie.

Speaking of Miyazaki, why do I rarely see his works being suggested when it comes to "Prove anime is mature!"? It is probably the ultimate choice.

well i dont really tell them about it but if i tell them i watch anime they wont know what i talking about but just the other day my father walked in the room when i was watching anime and he asked "Are you watching hentai?" and i just yelled at him to exit the room :P . Yeah so as you can see my father doesnt know what anime is but he knows what hentai is so its pretty much useless if it tell him i watch japanese cartoons because then hell just think its hentai. Also if i tried to get my father to watch anime he'd just say he doesnt have time for such things and completly ignore me .

To summarise i try to hide it especially from my father because of his prejudice .
Altough my brother knows its not all sex and hes tried watching some anime before but he just doesnt like alot .

My self, my husband, and my four children all watch anime. Sometimes together sometimes not. My seven year old grew up watching Miyazaki movies. He tells all his friends in school about Totoro, Ponyo, and No-face. Most of his class mates think it is super cool and wish their parents would let them watch. I do not see what the problem is with anime, it is nothing more than a genre of television/movies. It is no different than being a action movie fan or a sci-fi fan. It is something to enjoy and unwind with. Now like anything there are people who take it to extremes and give it a bad name. However, they are mostly in the minority.
There are many unusual things in this world. Everyday events occur that cannot be explained. Bizarre phenomena that often go unnoticed because people close their eyes to what they don’t understand. But the truth of the matter is, there are many unusual things in this world. And people…. People are the most mysterious of them all.

My family doesn't care one bit about what I do for my hobbies. I bet even if it's jerking off on dakimakuras, they still wouldn't be bothered.

What really bothers them however, is how much I spend on anime-related stuff which includes DVDs and figurines. Ah well, my family has always been cheap, even asking my mum for pocket money as a kid made her look like she's getting a heart attack. But I'm working now and earning my own money so they can't do a thing about it.

My family generally don't care, though they do comment about its violence when I watch it with them next to me (didn't watch any ecchi with them next to me, but I'm sure they'll comment on that if they did see me watching)

Only odd reaction I get is from non-anime-watching friends. They generally seem to think my outburst of weird imagination is somewhat connected to watching anime.
