Please read the whole post before commenting so you fully understand which type of anime I´m looking for

To make sure you understand what types of anime I like I will list my favorite animes.

Favorite animes:
Monster
Kino's Journey
Moomin (1990-91)
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Shinsekai yori
Haibane Renmei
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Zankyou no Terror
Psycho-Pass
Claymore

The most important things in anime for me is the story, atmosphere, characters and the world which the story takes place in. I want to be emotionally affected by the anime and drawn into it. I want the atmosphere of the anime make it feel believable and interesting. The characters should be relatable and complex. The world in which the anime takes place in is also very interesting for me. How the society works, how people live their life etc. Good examples of that are in Kino's Journey, Haibane Renmei (especially those two) and Psycho-Pass. But the emotional part is probably the most important, I must feel something when I watch the anime to enjoy it. And I don't really like humour, though it was okay in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. It just shouldn't be the main focus of the series.

Do you have any recommendations that fits one/some of the criterias?

I didn't care to check for grammatic errors etc., but I hope you understand what I wrote.

I'm thinking of watching 12 Kingdoms, do you think I would like that anime?

Saraiya Goyou (House of Five Leaves) should be right up your alley

You'd probably like it. The show starts off a bit shaky and the characters are unlikeable at first, but the journey is very much worth it. I don't recall there being much of an "atmosphere," but the intricate setting should make up for it. Great character development and story as well.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - in my opinion much better than the movie
Monogatari Series (Bakemonogatari, Nise...) - absolutely amazing art, great stories (one story last for a few episodes), great characters
Mawaru Penguindrum
Jormungand - if you like military/mercenaries stuff
Ping Pong The Animation - the art is "unique", but the story and characters are amazing and realistic
Durarara!! - nice story and great characters

Sarai-ya Goyou was the first show to come to mind for me as well. Other options include

Dennou Coil
Seirei no Moribito
Hyouge Mono
"Bake Neko" and its sequel Mononoke
Kurenai
Oh! Edo Rocket

Mouryou no Hako has a lot of atmosphere, but it's pretty slow-moving in the middle.
