What are some differences you see in genres over time?

So, I've made a thread in the past that was much more general than this, just overall, how anime has changed. That would be here, don't mix it with this one.

This time around I'm asking changes that you like, don't like, or have simply noticed within a shared genre. e.g., romances in 1980 vs. 2010, mecha in 1990 vs. 2000, etc.

I think the most obvious change over time has been comedy, which is understandable, as comedy changes along with pop culture and what's present at the time. Even as far as what's socially acceptable. Many comedy anime today are quite a bit more risque than they used to be. The use of violence, however, still sticks around today. Nowadays, it just doesn't feel the same, though.

Sex in high school is normal.
Sex comes right after a confession (in high school)
Couples that never tried to have sex with their partner are stupid.

I'd assume that sex in highschool in the hentai genre is not recent. But what do I know.
Seriously though, what shows are you watching Imeon where this is true?

Not really a "genre", but self-contained OVA's used to be violent action-fests with a little bit of gratuitous nudity, whereas nowadays they're nothing but just straight up porn.

Space operas and serious sci-fi are much less common (they've been on the decline since the 90's though), and mecha shows tend to just play it safe and not do anything original. It's just the market at work, though. The last two really original mecha shows for me were The Big O and Gasaraki, and guess what, they were both huge flops for Sunrise. If you wonder why Sunrise don't do anything interesting or innovative anymore, there's your answer.

I'm not well versed in sci-fi, but it clearly was more popular 20 years ago. On the bright side, I just watched Appleseed, and that's from 2004. I guess that's only 10 years-ish.

Considering the quality of a lot of original animation lately, I don't think that's such a bad thing.

I honestly don't know what is and isn't an original animation anymore, I stopped caring. I just want quality, that's all.

Gonna point out the obvious here, but action has really loved it's showy CG graphics these days to sell. I wouldn't say it's a bad thing, but more older ones felt like they came from the manga since they didn't use the CG.

I don't know anything about this, but I'm curious. Has there been a rise or decline in anime that change the ending of a manga? I don't mean ending early to get sales (heh, Sankarea), but outright going down a new path.

Anime skirts were always short (Kagome).

OT: There are few original works today. I like them because it really measures the talent of a studio in terms of story and animation. I also like it because there are no source materials to debate and compare. Just imagination.

Err, reverse traps is females who appear male. You're looking for 'traps'.
Only reverse trap I know off of the top of my head is Haruhi from Ouran Koukou Host Club.

Mahou Shoujo for kids have older Otaku fanbases now (and all of the issues surrounding that fanbase unfortunately).

There used to be lots of lolis in harem anime, now it's almost all tits (Screw you Japanese government).

Idol anime are more focused on local groups (usually situated in one prefecture or even one city) instead of larger, more manufactured groups like with Idolm@ster or AKB0048.

Actually, there have been a lot of shoujo and josei (well seinen too ofc) that prove what Imeon is saying.

It's not like adaptations are any less hit or miss... but they're highly on the rise, especially LN adaptations.

Yes. It's not really directly said but implied. If you watched so much anime other than hentai you can say this is somehow true.
