So this is a harem anime with the harem voice actor. The cooking just filler.

Just another episode for perverts and Otakus. The show does certainly improve and the humor get´s alot better, but comeone this was unnecessary.
It´s a mediocore show for a reason.
I couldn´t choose if I was meant to have a boner or get hungry. So I did both.

Seriously how to make this the perfect show.
1. Make every episode revolve around meat.
2. Enhance the fanservice make the show 16+.
3. Put in beer references and remove all the PG 13 comedy.
There we go you have yourself the manliest Anime since Hellsing and Gurren Lagann

I don't get what you're trying to say here. Are you implying this show is mediocre because of the fanservice?

Always enjoy watching a cooking battle where cheap ingredients beat expensive ones. It is really too easy to win a shokugeki with the best grade beef, it barely proves you have cooking skills. Even if the MC wins all the time, as long as it's because of skills, I can accept it.

It would be scarier if the stakes were lower in the shokugeki. MC will obviously win if his whole cooking career is on the line, but if it's something insubstantial, THAT poses a REAL THREAT. MC might get his self-esteem hurt, and by extension, my self-esteem would take a hit as well.

As always the dishes look super delicious and I'm glad the toned down Nikumi's foodgasam tbh, the judges as chibis were really cute as well!

I can't wait for the start of the next arc next time!!

An excellent episode, probably because of the build-up episode before, and because of how deep Mito's foodgasm was, involving her backstory and memories.

Was also good to learn about the umami taste group, had never heard of it before.

No I rather meant something around the lines of this!

Regarding the mediocrety, it´s my opinion towards the whole hype of the show.
I think it´s just an enjoyable Harem with neat humor that goes from bad to good and entertaining cooking showdowns. The story isn´t that compelling and the characters not too original. I actually see in Souma Luffy and Naruto while Erina is your typical Tsundere, Megumi is just another Hinata, with more screentime.

I'm entirely certain that either the mangaka or the anime team has suffered a severe brain trauma prior to the creation of this anime. I love food so i keep watching, but everything else is absolute garbage.

Or at least the first part.
It was a pleasant surprise though. :)

Luffy, Naruto and Hinata aren't exactly original either so I don't see how that's a bad thing and Erina isn't a "typical tsundere" lol. I also don't see how this is a harem anime. Just because the characters are blushing it doesn't mean they're in love with the Souma.

I just finished the last episode and commented right after. Call me what you'd like, at least i'm not the one defending this dumb ass anime where eating raw onions (i guess i need to spell out that this is an exaggeration, and the point is that the foodgasms often come from the most basic and relatively tasteless foods) would strip the clothes of people in foodgasms. So much dumb shit it's actually funny.

Point is the ecchi is the only really bad thing about this, and the competition could be harder ofc, and the story a bit deeper. But it's still an ok watch in it's own way.

Nothing is 100% unique anymore, neither is Light from Deathnote or Alucard from Hellsing. I didn´t say the show is bad I do certainly enjoy it. It´s just nothing special and the sale numbers speak for itself.

Let me rephrase it. Naruto or One Piece are more unique Shounen than this.
Before you start arguing no they are not, yes they are because of their age, they reinvented some of those Shounen tropes that are so popular and cliche nowdays.Even though they are Dragon Ball inspired they shaped an era. SNS is a good show, but it´s way more conventional. It´s more than a generic Harem because it mixes the traits of a battle shounen, but it´s still nothing more than a harem/battle shounen mixture.

I´ve read the entirety of Ranma 1/2 and have to say I enjoyed this show way more. It always was a generic harem/battle shounen combination, but it never tried to be more. Also the humor had way more quality. Ohohho that´s so funny he makes silly buttsounds, the jokes are just immature. The times I really laughed at Food wars are yet to come in the Anime and it was when the author didn´t actually try to be funny but rather give a unique note to a character. That French cooking guy, I don´t know his name, whenever he does his magical girl cooking giving dudes Sailor Moon outfits I fall from my chair. That´s funny, you catch your viewer off guard. But asswobbling jokes are even cheaper than fart jokes. Oh no he shakes his naked ass, how silly. Really that´s humor today? It doesn´t even add innocence to the show because of the fanservice the show is far from that. Decide what you wanna do, make dirty jokes and pull through or be innocent and leave the fanservice out. Don´t direct half of the show to teens and the other half to 7 year olds.

Ecchi/FS is almost never bad, except when it completely overwhelmes the series (such as AIKa, AIKa Zero).

However, if you only watched kid/action anime until now, then ecchi may be a bit much.

Like I earlier said, just because the characters blush it doesn't mean they're in love with the Souma. This isn't a harem and neither is this generic.

Again what's your point? Ranma 1/2 is a "comedy" anime so it's supposed to make you laugh. Shokugeki no Souma doesn't have comedy as one of its genre so its not supposed to make you laugh and its not one of its main focus.

Something that would make one laugh would make the other frowning in disgust. Humor is subjective but that's not even one of this show's main focus so why are you making a big issue out of this?

I feel you completely missed the point, it's not the wobbling that is funny, it's the nakedness, because of how improbable a quasi-nudist would be in Japanese society. The wobbling is just here to add concrete emphasis on the nakedness. Improbable humour appeals to all age classes.

But that said, since it's an ecchi show, of course they'll use every opportunity to do some male fanservice, to balance out the over-abundant female fanservice.

Ok before this shit becomes even more pointless let me summarize.

I think this show is pretty generic and just mediocore, that´s my opinion I expressed nothing else. You asked for the why.Because I made a joke about manliness and how beer, hot woman and meat as a theme make the perfect show (for men).

Since you want an elaborate debate on why this show is jus mediocore. It does nothing better than other shows of it´s genre. It doesn´t deliver, in every area it tries to deliver it doesn´t do much. It certainly has half naked women, have I seen better porn? Yes I do. The fights aren´t really awesome, because well they are about cooking and hard to take serious. The comedy is ok, but not outstanding, many other shows are better.
The story is more or less ok, but more often predictable than not.

Apparently it has only 3 genres according to the details manager.

Music+Animation= It´s good nothing to complain about, just your typical seasonal Anime quality.
Ecchi= It certainly delivers and is often well placed, but this episode in particular I found it to be annoying. Yes Ikumi, we get it you have big tits. I´d still rather see the story progress.

School= Yes it takes place in school, what else to say. It´s an interesting premise to make the best students have much power, for it´s uniqueness I´d say this is above average since the school is involved.

Shounen= Yes it certainly is a shounen. It uses alot of cliches in the book, like characters, forced tension, will he be expelled? Find out on the next episode of Yu-Gi-Oh, when the fate of the world rests on Soumas cooking. Then the hard working Mc, that never gives up and encourages everyone around him. Or the cliche of introducing 3 girls in a will they won´t they relationship with the MC.
No I do not consider it a Harem because of Blushes. I´ll give you the reasons why i consider this a Harem.

1.His father mentions he needs to find a girl "he loves" so that he can cook for her.Cut to Erina, like the author saying that´s this girl.

2.MC befriends the shy girl, improves her self confidence blablabla, they become friends. Np maybe she´s the female sidekick.Fuck he has seen her naked! This wouldn´t be problematic if it wasn´t in conform for women following Japanese culture to "show their skin" only to their Husband.Still maybe that´s no big deal it was by mistake after all. But Megumi mentions this right after, sorry Mom I cannot get married anymore. Many will play that off as a joke. But no that´s the author playing with expectations enforcing pairing wars.

3.Ikumi, she´s the one with the most blatant affection towards Souma , and I bet sometime in the future they will throw in a scene where Megumi and her befriend and she mentions how Souma saw her naked on their first day, just to make Ikumi freak out and leave the room for a cheap laugh.

Like I said an enjoyable show, it just doesn´t deliver enough.

See that´s where I do not have a problem, with the guys getting foodgasms too.
Yes if the girls do why not the guys. Fanservice for everyone.

I think it´s not spoiling when I say there is a bathhouse scene with dudes. Fanservice for the ladies. But that gay guy getting naked is supposed to be funny. It´s not funny when a guy shows just his ass in my book. The last time I found that funny I was 7.

It know that´s subjective, but I cannot think of anyone who genuinely laughed at this scene who isn´t a virgin. The pointis the joke is so innocent that even a fart joke is dirtier. In a show where you express women getting off on food, that shouldn´t be your worry.

Imo it´s missing the whole nature of the show. If you show one momment a half naked girl trembling at the deliciousness of a meal and in the next you are making asswobbling jokes you combine 2 demographics.

You really don't: as I was saying, the improbable humour (like seeing a giant banana fall from the sky), is universal, and isn't age or gender-related.

And for the sake of the argument, let's suppose you're right, even then the shounen demographic is quite wide, so your interpretation would still be incorrect even then. Especially when you think how immature Japanese humour is in general, and how their favorite humoristic device is repetition in particular (just watch any variety show to be convinced).

It´s true that japanese humor is quite often immature, but it´s also weird and sadistic at other times, we could sit here and debate which is more true and never get a conclusion. Just keep in mind the japanese do use very childish humor for shows like One Piece, but they also create the most brutal and scary horror movies worldwide.
And no I do not mean trash like Tokyo gore police or Crocosaurus vs Megashark.
They have a wide variety of entertainment since Anime as a media simply has an overarching spectrum, and movies in general. Japan isn´t just Anime and the humor in live action movies vastly differs from that in Anime.

Which is why I´ll just quote Miyazaki here and say.
Anime should not be made by Otakus for Otakus. Food wars although partially grounded certainly has alot of nods towards Otakus. If you´ve matured enough you will not like asswobbling jokes. If you´re a 25 year old virgin living in the basement of your mom with an Asuka pillow, you probably will.

This isn't about which is more true, it's about how the humour in Shokugeki no Souma is aimed at one demographic. What you just said is irrelevant to what we are discussing.

It´s not because not every 12-19 year old which incorperates the demographic of Shounen likes ass wobbling jokes, I do not remember that me any of my friends or any of my classmates to laugh at such a joke. I didn´t make study on this, which would be the requirement to close this debate. But I do not think that a vast mayority of teenagers finds this to be funny. Except the japanese teenagers have such an immature humor.

If I´m wrong feel free to prove me wrong by showing me any source that explains how well or ill received this joke in particular is.
I get the concept of a running gag and how it´s a general well perceived concept. But a running gag can go from OMG they killed Kenny, To Homer strangling his son. To Zorro having no sense of direction, to a guy wobbling his ass.

I do not believe that people honestly give this show any improved credit for showing off this guys naked butt and wobbling it,

Brilliant episode! The first Shokugeki on a grand scale for Souma was fantastic to say the least. Nikumi's close up shots were...yeah. But damn, the meat look DELISH as fuck, I'd LOVE to have all that meat in my mouth for sure. x)

Anwyays, really fun episode, especially at the end. Can't wait for the next one.

This was a pretty good introduction to the Shokugeki. Nikumi was impressive, but essentially she knew nothing about the art of Dons. It was quite fun to watch. The way they animated the meat cooking was visually beautiful but seriously harsh on the stomach (I didn't have any food with me....).

Next up is the Aldini brothers. I can't wait.

The bra scene at the start is actually a part of 4 koma in the comic volumes. Hahaha. I like the fiery flame bra... just like Yoko from TTGL.

And as usual Souma being a troll. Cant wait for the next arc. This is where it gets good. ^_^

I never understood that either but Yukimura kicked ass ofc.

They just explained that last episode :( :( :(
Being a chef means supplying your own ingredients and that means good connections with food suppliers and farmers, you think just any ingredient is good enough to go to high class restaurants?

It's funny since later in the manga, the ecchi almost disappear to let better foodgasm without any stripping and there will be a lot of competition too, Souma isn't as strong as you think he is, they just haven't introduced some other strong cook yet.

Both of the food looked so delish. Even so, Souma was the triumphant in that shokugeki. Don food has to taste better in everything inside the bowl after all.
In the end he wasn't even a member after all! The way it went was so hilarious! LOL! I felt a little sorry there for Nikumi.

Great episode after a good buildup in the last episode. I found the commentator was hilarious, have an inner self and shit.. XD XD

As for the food wars.. That's a good one.. For the people who think souma will lose, come on, if souma lose he will get expelled.. Ofc he's gonna win this.. It's his first food wars after all.. But i do hope in the later of the story there's a better chef who can beat souma in food wars..

The art is still an excellent ones.. Made me hungry with these whole meat related foods in this episode, lol.. Overall an entertaining ones, can't wait to see it again next week..

5/5

I watch this for the food. My god, the food looks delicious. Never will I be able to produce something like these dishes...

Lol Yukihira Soma slaying women and winning Shokugeki with cheap meats like a true Don cook.

The meat master has mastered my meat, indeed.

I agree that everything about this show screams "conventional shounen." Even the cooking scenes are executed in a way to make them look either like a traditional shounen training scene or a traditional shounen battle scene. The cooking setting puts a new spin on it and makes it fun, but that alone is hardly enough to make it "unique."

It's a good show, I'm digging it, but anybody trying to say it isn't conventional is just lying to themselves because the setting is the only remotely "different" thing about the series.

Hmmm predictable results here, so nothing to be surprised about. :)
Souma kicking Nikumi's butt with half-price meat, how about that?!

Interesting development at the end! Nikumi actually fall in love with Souma?! SHHHIIIIIIPPPPP!!

Fun episode. It's probably gonna devolve into a harem at the rate it's going, but it'll at least still be fun.

Isn't the point of don for it to be affordable? Why did Nikumi splurge on excessively priced ingredients just for the sake of it being a good dish? Don't any of these pretentious characters know anything other than luxury cuisine, or are they just snobs?
Why do people have such bad taste? Anime isn't subjective anymore.

Loved how the judges of the Shokugeki almost immediately devoured Soma's don when it was presented to them.. Soma is just THAT good.

Nikumi has developed a crush on Soma, only to find out that he isn't joining Don RS. XD

Great episode :D
