~ ☣ The Ramblings of an Insane Science Lover ☣ ~

Due to requests from members, this will be a thread dedicated to all things science; where you can discuss theories, ask questions of our more experienced scientists, or simply enjoy the glory of science. Let's keep the club alive~!

P.S. Since this will probably derail into a chat thread anyway, feel free to discuss non-science related things here as well. Science-related topics only!

I don't know much about science, hahaha xD still in high school here hohoho

There's this thing that annoys me until now, though. Since I never got to understand it. Even until now. ;_;

It's equilibrium. Huhuhuhu T^T

The only thing which I'm certain is true in Science is that fishes can't breathe on land. hue

"In water, the mudskipper breathes through gills like other fishes do. However, when on land, it carries around its own "air tanks"; a mixture of air and water in its gill chambers." source

oooohh I think I've read of that fish somewhere else >.> I think it was on some kind of "list" or something, for the unique creatures of this world, yadayada.

I hate blobfishes. Eeew.

If someone goes back in time, would that person go back in time in our time or would our time continue without that person and he'd go back in time but in another time? Something like a copy/paste of times where the time traveler moves from the original time to the copy time. Hm.

I have zero knowledge regarding theoretical physics and quantum mechanics but according to Wikipedia:

Everett's many-worlds interpretation (MWI) of quantum mechanics suggests that all possible quantum events can occur in mutually exclusive histories. These alternate, or parallel, histories would form a branching tree symbolizing all possible outcomes of any interaction. If all possibilities exist, any paradoxes could be explained by having the paradoxical events happening in a different universe.

David Deutsch suggested that if time travel is possible and the MWI is correct, then a time traveler should indeed end up in a different history than the one he started from.

On the other hand, Stephen Hawking has argued that even if the MWI is correct, we should expect each time traveler to experience a single self-consistent history, so that time travelers remain within their own world rather than traveling to a different one.

Novikov self-consistency principle asserts that if an event exists that would give rise to a paradox, or to any "change" to the past whatsoever, then the probability of that event is zero, thus it is impossible to create time paradoxes. It assumes either that there is only one timeline, or that any alternative timelines are not accessible

Everett argues that even if Deutsch's approach is correct, it would imply that any macroscopic object composed of multiple particles would be split apart when traveling back in time through a wormhole, with different particles emerging in different worlds.

Excuse me while I go mend my brain.

I just quoted all that from wikipedia cuz I don't know anything about physics or time travel :P

I assume you are referring to the many-worlds interpretation. Your view is that when a man travels back in time (point A to B), that in itself changes the past and he will be unable to return to his original future A and end up in C.

The question is: Did he travel back to his own past (B-A timeline) or a different one (D-E timeline)? David Deutsch argues that the man would end up in D which leads to the future E since in the B-A timeline, the man never time traveled.

But consider this: The predestination paradox or temporal causality loop is a scenario in which some earlier event #1 is the cause of (or at least one of the causes of) some later event #2, and through time travel, event #2 is also the cause of event #1. I think this is similar to what Hawking argues.

For example, your cookies were burnt in the oven (#1) and you travel back in time to set the timer for a shorter time but you made a mistake and set longer (#2). When you return to the future, your cookies will be burnt (#1).

This suggests that the man would return to his own future A.

If Deutsch is right, I find it interesting that a time traveler is able to jump between timelines when traveling to the past but unable to do so when traveling into the future.

What makes a human a human? Is it the mix of body parts and personality or would you consider just a personality human? If I lose an arm, would you consider me a non-human, since I'm not complete in the human body parts aspect? Following this logic, if I grabbed my brain and slapped it in a robot body, would you still consider me a human? Or would you consider me something else?

That's a philosophical question (Mostly asked by people with existential crisis)
The special thing about human is that we're "unique" from each other. There is 7 billion people on this world and on this day they live their day in different way.. Aside from that, the one who judges the humanity inside you is the other human..
Lets take it this way, if you're a 23 years old male which works as clerk on nearby store, lives on apartment and loves to play chess on park people would think you as general human.. But if you're a 23 years old male which works as clerk on nearby store, lives on apartment and loves to lick every bypassing person then people will sense some inhuman traits inside you..

(If you slapped your brain like that you will dead for sure..)
(And if the technology is enough to make a robot very much the same as human I'm sure those robots will rebel against human soon.. Because they will naturally seeks freedom like human did)
(Plus if you're not born from a human womb you're obviously not a human)
(The concept of humanity is unwritten as it is a common sense if your mental age is old enough)
