This topic has been done to death, but I'm interested in opinions.

Personally, I prefer comics, because of great stories like The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, and funny series like Deadpool.

Manga is pretty serious though, Like Death Note, Berserk, Full Metal Alchemist, Attack on Titan, etc.

I'm not bashing manga though, I haven't read much, but I enjoyed Pokemon Adventures (or whatever it's called), ChocoMimi, and Dolls (as in the one with the plant dolls)

And before you say, "Your comics never get shows based on them", kindly look at some of DC's animated movies, like Under The Red Hood, The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and Part 2, and Justice League: Doom, all of which are based on the DC comic books.

I think you need to read some more manga. I worked at a comic book store for a few years. I've read a lot of both and like both. I tend to keep up with manga more because it is a bit cheaper (those floppy comics keep getting more expensive). But you are talking about some of the best and most serious American comics vs some pretty light weight manga.

Some suggestions:
Berserk
Vagabond
Vinland Saga
Sanctuary

Both have their merits. Though I think I lean more towards manga since there is more verity of genres. I know not everything is a super hero story in American comics but a lot of it is. I also like that most manga have a complete story. Which is a large part of what drew me into anime and manga.

What i dislike about American comics is the seeming lack of creator ownership and control. Marvel and DCs icons just keep cycling through story arcs by different writer and artist teams, each new team effectively or deliberately undoing significant life-changing events written by the last, and since they are corporate cash cows there's little danger of them really ending. Granted, there are also creator-owned titles under the Image and Top Cow banners that seem to exist only to cash in on hot trends... Yes, there are also super-popular manga titles that go on forever or that get extended beyond the logical ending (do I even need to name names?), but creator ownership shows more over-arching vision and direction as well as the power to end the story appropriately rather than when sales dip.

In Japan, on the other hand, the artists makes their own stuff and when they stop, the manga stops. That means that they have full control of the series which in turn, contributes greatly in storytelling/characterizations consistency of long running/popular series. And this gives a wonderful diversity as we've seen in manga industry today.

Personally, l prefear the lower quality black and white manga over the colorful american comics. This is mainly due to the series in US changes artists without warning, and several of my past favorites often suffered horrible fates in the hands of replacement artists.

My problem with many comics are...they're made to literally never end. Batman, Superman, Avengers...they'll never end, so we'll never get closure or good character development.

Like Amiluhur said, another problem is that almost nothing is permanent. You could be following a comic for ten years, and then a new writer comes and retcons the whole thing, making it pointless, or kills off all your favorite characters, or worse, gives their personality a 360.

With manga, none of that I usually ever a problem, because only one author writes the whole manga.

I agree, Rob Leifeld is a good example of a bad comic artist.

I like mangas more than comics because they are one big story, instead of multiple stories. It has more continuity. Also, reboots on comics and whatnot confuse the hell out of me. It's basicaly impossible to know where to start a comic, especialy from DC and Marvel (basicaly the 2 actual comics company xD). I don't know, mangas just seems more focused to me.

I don't really dislike comics though, I love Walking Dead and Fables (wich I haven't read nowhere near enough). Hell, I even have the huge guidebooks for the Marvel Universe and the DC one :D

i like long contuining stories and over all manga has always done that more
"If you tremble with indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine"

When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one
For the Union makes us strong

I'm not really interested in the genre variety comics have. With manga I get sports, romance, historical drama, magic insects and lesbian pornography, which is much more my thing than superheroes. I'm pretty sure there are some avant garde comics about some murican dudes with a midlife crisis and shit, but meh.

:[ Some of you people cry about others stereotyping Japanese anime and manga but you also end up stereotyping American comic books.

Superheroes are not the only things American comic book artists write about. :D Please do a little bit more research before you trash an entire industry. I guarantee you, they're just as diverse as Japanese manga.

I do agree with you but I do have to say super hero stuff does dominate the landscape. Though a ton of non-super hero comics get turned into movies people just don't realize it.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
A History of Violence
Sin City
Ghost World
American Splendor
Persepolis
From Hell
Road to Perdition
300
30 Days of Night
Stardust

Some of my favorite western comics are fantasy like Fables, Castle Waiting, Courtney Crumrin, or Sandman. There are also some great sci-fi titles like Transmetropolitan, Saga, and Girls.

I like manga a lot more. In general there seems to be better visual flow. A lot of comics I've read have too much visual information going on. Tons of colour and detail in every single panel and the general word count seems to be much higher. Makes it more difficult for your eyes to just effortlessly be guided through the pages.

Though I guess I don't really understand the visual language of comics compared to manga as much.

When you say Western Comic you mean american comics right? Because there are as well Franco-Belgian comics and other comics in Europe.

I prefer mangas over american comics for many reasons:

- Esthetic: I prefer the look of mangas over american comics.

- Diversity: there are a lot of different mangas about all sort of subjects, while american comics are mostly about super heroes.

- Lengh: I don't like long series, I like it that there is a beginning, a middle, and an end with character development, so mangas are usually short compared to american comics (mostly super heroes), that never really end and keeps getting revamped and continued.

- Consistency: I like it that it's the same artists that keep the series running which is the case for mangas, while the american comics, in order to keep their series running forever keep changing of artists and writers.

I always had a problem with the denomination of "comics" .
People tend to use it like it means "super hero comics" for what I undestand , so then it would only mean a specific genre of comics , am I right ?
Does "western comics" mean something else than "comics" then ?
I'm serious with those question , because even when looking for definition and such , the source seems to contradict themselve or then they say something that seems different than the actual use of the word in everyday conversation or forums .

I've never read super hero comics , it never interested me . The only one I read was Watchmen , (wich I loved) , but I know it is considered peculiar and even not really like a "super hero" comics . More like a "graphical novel" .
Before discovering manga , I was into european stuff , maybe more in the underground departement . Then I discovered american "underground author" (but are they that underground to begin with now ?) like Daniel Clowes and Chis Ware . I still love them and consider them as extremely talented authors.

The only thing I can say is that , now that I'm into reading manga , I tend to have more problem with the overal structures of comics , I mean the book in themselve : I prefer the little size and format of manga , their paneling , the number of page , etc..
The reading seems more fluid to me , and the "lack" of color never was a problem for me .

I've only read 2 spidey comics in my life and 1 of them had xmen on the back. I love both.

What I hate about american comics tho is that many superhero comics are on the same style and that those comics are very short. That's all I love all of them.

However manga's are always on top. The artstyle is just amazing as fuck! the oh I won't even bother naming.. everything is so amazing :'3 literary everything :)

Haven't read all that much of either.
My stats define 3 days worth of manga, and I guess it'd be something similar for Western comics.
I think I lean towards manga, but there are some very good Western comics/graphic novels.
An old favorite of mine is Elfquest which debuted in 1978 or so. The first volumes are gorgeously colored by one of the two creators, Wendy Pini. Surpisingly, all of it is freely available on the official website.
Incidentally, the style of Elfquest should probably appeal more to manga fans than most other Western comics.
Just take a look: http://elfquest.com/read/index.php?s=OQ/OQ01
