Do you like mech or do you hate it? What are some of your favorite shows with mech, even if you hate it and why do you think so much anime has mech? Is it a good tactic or one that lacks creativity?

I personally hate mechs although I've enjoyed some anime with mech in it like Code Geass which is one of my favorites. I feel that mech lacks creativity for modern anime since it's not hard to come up with a big bad robot that has arm cannons galore, but maybe that's just me.

Nothing wrong with mechs, but for some reason they love using unlikeable main characters for mecha anime.

Mecha allows for a unique avenue for anime to explore heroism, human conflict, and the themes of soft sci-fi. Its pure iconicism and contribution to anime as a whole is simply immeasurable.
In the past, and even now, it remains a integral part of the anime landscape.

Haven't really seen many. But actually, most of mecha shows I have seen were very good.

TTGL, Code Geass, FLCL are all my favourite animes

I don't mind mechs, sometimes they are really cool.

Aldnoah Zero is one of the good ones, as well as Code Geass.

It depends how the mecha are used. One of the reasons Universal Century Gundam is one of the greatest sagas you'll ever see is because the mechs are a medium to tell this grand war story and narrative on humanity. It's easy for a show to get fixated on "oh look shiny mechs" or "let's throw in mechs because we can" which typically equates to crap on average imo.

Code Geass shouldn't have even had mechs they literally just threw those in there to rake in unsuspecting mech fans.

I love mechs but I much prefer when they take on a more war realistic approach then just robots fighting for the sake of some petty goal. UC Gundam timeline is a great example of what can make mechas so great and then on the opposite side there are things like Star Driver and Buddy Complex that just don't quite do it. Though mechas for some reason tend to have some of the most generic MCs ever...

NGE, Rahxephon, Unicorn, and Patlabor would like to have a word...

Good writing and creativity aren't genre specific. Tea and madeleines can be the substance of a masterpiece. Proust proved it.

Mechs can be amazing but too few times are they NOT generic (99% of Gundams) or just stupid (Aldnoah.Zero).

Yes, as long as the mecha anime is the "real-robot" or has explainable technology and has real world influence, such as politics, not just some teenagers transforming or riding a silly weird robot and self-proclaiming "Defender of Justice" or "Destroyer of evil"

I like the robots themselves, but I don't know about the genre since I haven't watched enough. Despite loving Gurren Lagann, I'm speculating that overall I'll prefer the real robot subgenre, or at least something in between real robot and super robot. Beyond that, I don't know.

I don't really think of power suits or power armor as mecha. To use Iron Man as a Western example, I don't think of the normal suit as mecha, but I do think of the Iron Monger as a mecha.

It might seem arbitrary, but I have a hard time thinking of anything small as "mecha" even if it technically is.

At first I was like that. I thought mecha was only about giant robots, I never knew anime about armored suits, cyborgs, androids were also considered mecha.

A lot of them are really great, though some of them are annoying. I haven't really liked many of the "combining super robot" anime for instance.

And they could all work without the mechs, even the ones that pioneered the modern mech anime.

I prefer more realistic space combat such as the fights exhibited in "Cowboy Bebop" and simply advanced ground warfare in the likes of video games with a futuristic setting.

I like Mechs, but not from Japanese Anime, but from video games, more specifically Battlemechs from Battletech and Hecrs from Earthsiege. I feel like they're a somewhat more realistic of what a mech would look like if it were real. They feel like real machines of war unlike gundams that look humanoid like and fly all over the place shooting billions of lazors and rockets.

But what the hell do I know...Maybe gundams will become a reality in real life one day...

I don't care anything about mechs, however I'll watch shows containing them as long as the quality is good and the story doesn't revolve entirely around that limited subject.

Mechs can be interesting, but hardly ever in anime.

Western media does them better. Warhammer 40,000 Tau suits for example. Looks way more believable and like actual thought went into the designs unlike 99% of Japanese mecha which look like the #1 priority for the creatives behind them were to save plastic on licensed toys.

Too flimsy and spindly without being sleek, holding guns with robotic hands rather than integrating/ underslinging guns into arms, lots of useless adornments which do jack shit etc.

^^ This is how it's done.
