Did SHAFT make Monogatari more popular?

Would the Monogatari Series have been as successful if it wasn't animated by SHAFT and Shinbo?

SHAFT/Shinbo series are quite unique in a way... some people call it artistic while others think it's a easy way to cut the budget (all those stills, blank scenes, random colors).

I've heard that the LN series were quite popular by themselves but the anime series has really made it popular. What if another studio animated Monogatari?

Lots of good manga/LN get butchered because the adaptation was terrible.

Yes. Considering the novels were huge and best sellers before the anime adaptation. Niso isin was popular before it.

SHAFT did Bakemonogatari Justice by giving it 15 episodes. Any other studio would have given it 13 episodes and we would have then gotten some shit second season and never hear about the anime again.

But then again Nisio, Isin gets good adaptions for some reason. Katanagatari was another one of them but medaka box was pretty bad.

I think it would have still been popular, just not nearly as much so. It's a unique show that needed a unique company to be as good as it is, and SHAFT filled that role perfectly.

Although, most studios might have never picked the Monogatari series up to begin with.

Perhaps the question could have been better phrased... Would both SHAFT and Monogatari been as popular if they didn't work together?

I'm wondering what this series would've turned out like if it had more... normal animation.

Medaka Bo is a decent manga and Nisio's try at shounen genre.

It's a generic ecchi harem.

Of course it'd still be popular.

The "SHAFT" style does save a lot in terms of animation budget. And if they get good sales, they'll just redo the animation in the blu-rays.

Monogatari series is popular because Shinbo directed it. Shaft doesn't really have much to do with it. His signature style just happened to work extremely well with the content (I like to call "psychological comedy" which is driven mostly by word games).

This series would have fallen flat (at least for me) if anyone else had directed it. Just imagine, all that dialog without the random shots and head-tilts... it would have been awful.

I don't want to over-praise Shinbo though. His style only benefits content that is more psychological in nature. It doesn't work for romcom, and I have a whole bunch of those in my drop list that he directed.

SHAFT definitely gave this show a better.. I guess feeling. I think that any other studio would be able to make this show as good/entertaining as it was/is.

I wouldn't say that it's popular because of SHAFT. But the unique way of animating that SHAFT does, and this series just compliment each other perfectly in my opinion.

The Monogataris are what they are mostly thanks to the animations and the style (apart of their mostly brilliant characters), so I think that is true that the influence of Shaft has made the popularity of the series, although I think that with the popularity of the novels, it would have an anime adaptation even without Shaft on scene.

I think they both made each other a bit more popular.

Monogatari is popular because of Shaft, because the latter uses the visuals they had been using for four years previously for the animation (imo, this kinds of kills the Monogatari anime for me, they go too overboard with the visuals that it detracts from everything else and doesn't build up any momentum).

Shaft is popular because of Monogatari, because people like Monogatari (and Madoka Magica) so much that they treat Shaft as the best animation studio to ever exist because of that, even though just because a studio made good shows doesn't mean that every show they make is good.

I don't really care about which made which more popular, but I started reading the Monogatari light novels out of a sense of fairness, and I actually think they're pretty decent.

I get the feeling that I would have enjoyed Monogatari a lot more if it had been done by the same studio as Katanagatari, or at least any other studio, rather than Shaft.

SHAFT popular because of monogatari?

Maybe it -increased- their popularity..but I'd heard of SHAFT long before that show.

It's like no one's watched Zetsubou Sensei..

It's mutual, both are popular because of each other.
Monogatari LN were already famous enough in Japan so Shaft got the spotlight by adapting them. Monogatari also become famous because of Shaft unique, aesthetic and godly animation. They were totally faithful to the material. Not to mention their music is osm.
