| When you root for the protagonist of a series, especially those in a romance with more than one female interest, you also project your own ideas into the series. You not only want the protagonist to be successful, but you also want the girl you find the most attractive (not only in the sense of beauty), redeemable, and interesting as a character to be the one the protagonist ends up with. This might be self-insertion for some people, but I don't see it that way, because usually when I think about the best girl, it's not in series with a protagonist that I cannot connect with. I can't speak for everybody but for me, the best girl is just the girl that I ship in the series. I usually find the cliche main female character to be bland and not very interesting in most shounen series. I like characters with more spunk whose problems and their relationship with the protagonist make up for a more interesting route in a romantic development. Essentially, it's just who the viewer likes better as a character and wants to see be the main romantic interest. |
