The further I get into season 2 man, the show just feels completely different.

The tone is darker, the pacing is way faster.

Half the characters feel like completely different people, especially marie who is more mature and quiet, or nyanta who is barely even in the show.

I realize deen is adapting this visually, but did they hire a completely different director or alter the script or something?

It feels like this show went from Fairy Tail type comedy in season one, to evangelion level gif spam and psychological mumbo jumbo.

I t was toned down in the first season but the dark elements were present sense the beginning. This time the dark elements cannot be so easily dismissed as they are crucial to the main plot of the story. still if u read the LN it would be even darker... than it is now

The show was trying in the beginning to do a more economic/tactical but, season 2 seems to focus more on the new problems that they caused during the first season. Now you could compare season 2 with the first two or three episodes of SAO(only way better I might add). With a more serious to it,I mean the first season focused more on tactical themes and such but season 2 is more showing us human nature and such. How we can change in our nature because of it just being a game, that is what I at least think is the reason for the show's change of tone

True, way to ruin the characters, especially Akatsuki who from a likable character turned into some whiny bitch I'm starting to seriously be pissed with; she's supposed to be what, college student age-wise, right? Yet they made her more whiney than any kid in this show, and that's saying something. I'm disappointed.
