The events take place after the Extra Edition anime special and serves as pretty much an extension to the plot. I liked how Kirito referenced Kizmel from the Progressive series. Kirito also explains that since he reset his stats in ALO, he's been farming hard in order to catch up to the others, showing his dedication and effort to become strong. And only he is able to infiltrate the Sylph headquarters just to meet Sakuya XD

One of the main parts though is that they were finally able to reach the summit of the World Tree and that New Aincrad served as Asgard in ALO. Kirito also comments and commends on how sophisticated the AIs where, technology is definitely evolving. And Kirito getting the highest branch of the World Tree perhaps an allusion to Alicization?
