I'm in Science, so I use zero editing software for my homework. There's no reason for me to need a Mac. I got a Toshiba Satellite for about $600, and it works out great for me, seeing as the hardware is good enough to even handle gaming.

Yet at any given time when I turn around in the lecture hall, all I see is glowing apples. I want to cry, thinking of all those poor science students that only shelled out extra cash on a Mac because their friend had one too, when they could've gotten a computer better suited to their needs, for less.

I have a PhD in science and my Mac laptop saw me through to the bitter end. Perfectly suited my needs. I know a lot of profs at Tier 1 research schools that buy them as well (more common lately.. my boss who made fun of my laptop bought one himself 4 years later). So your field isn't that important. I wanted something different from my desktop (PC) and I got it.

It just comes down to preferences and I don't understand why everyone thinks they are mutually exclusive. I own a Mac laptop and have a nice PC desktop (gamer at heart). I wanted my laptop to be distinct from my desktop. Why is there no idea like bisexuality for computers (or even pansexuality if we expand a bit more)?

Oh and I love how we can classify people's personalities and careers by one computer they own. I use a minimum of 4 different ones daily.

Actually, a PC intergrated with a Mac runs extremely well, I wouldn't mind building myself one of those, but I don't really have any money right now.

Because you can only edit videos and pictures on a Mac, naturally.

I don't hate Macintosh per say, but I'd much rather use Windows. Only because Windows is more popular and thus more compatible with many things, most importantly video games. Plus I've used it all my life so I'm more used to it and all its defects.

I once met a woman (graphic designer by trade allegedly) who tried to access google images by typing "google images" into her yahoo browser. She became both confused and flustered when images of the google logo appeared on the screen. "Why isn't it going to Google! I don't understand!" she said. Minutes later, when she still had not managed to access Google, she looked around wildly, highly embarrassed and affirmed "I'm a Mac girl you see", with a big shit eating grin on her face.

But really. Not all Mac users are completely incompetent idiots. I'm sure there are many perfectly normal folks who use these computers. I just happen to have met quite a lot of the former. Thus the slight dislike for people who love to tell me about how they are "Mac people" and how much easier and better it is to use a Mac computer.

All glitz and glamour. Trying to be young and hip and fresh and whatnot.

Just like the users.

I'm a mac user just based on family history but I hate it except for the speed/lack of virus'.
I HATE how every mac user/apple is so stereotypical of pc's though.

Not that expensive to buy. A pentium dual-core system, couple gigs of ram, a cheap 9xxx series geforce card with a compatible mobo and a reasonable hdd can get you about $400 - 600. Compare that with an iMac which costs double or more and runs the same OS and more.

Just because it's cheap doesn't mean I have the money.....
Besides, I wouldn't be getting a cheap 900 series nor do I think I would want dual-core, I'd save the money to build something worth dancing over.

"My" computer is a mac and I'm an "artist;" I've just found that it has worked best for me, so when I replace it I'll most likely get a mac. But my husband has a windows pc, which we use to stream media to the xbox. So I wouldn't be without a pc, even though I prefer macs :)

Overall, I think the "warring sides" when it comes to what kind of system that you use is pretty pointless. Also, why do people care about who owns what? Why does it bother them? It is something I will never understand.

See the consumerism thread?

disclaimer: I have not actually read that thread.

I use a mac because it suits my fucking mind better, and I've used one for so long. I feel that the OS is a better design for how I want to use a computer. I don't think I will get a mac laptop though, if I get one. I will get an eee PC and then try out windows 7. It suits my needs more, because I would like something small for typing and basic tasks, and if I were to buy a tiny macbook air it would be a waste of money for me. It would be too big (thin, but still bigger than the eee), and have extra power I would never actually use. I prefer desktop computers, and I like my iMac. This is just me. I don't think it really should be a "war"
Also with a student discount macs are not too badly priced.. plus dodgy American dollar. I do think that macs should be less expensive, though. But hey, don't you wish everything were less expensive?

i dont hate either (although i prefer PC - i built my desktop and have a netbook)

if you have a decent reason why you want to use a mac or pc, i have no problem with it

but i only have problems with one stereotypical type of mac user: the female fashionista who buys a mac just because its pretty and she has money. and then she cant even figure out how to use it. now THAT pisses me off.

This, personally, I prefer Mac over Linux & Windows, Linux is a great OS, but my experience with hardware compatibility sucked, I couldn't find drivers for many of my hardware, sadly saying.

Really? I found that a majority of my stuff works fine on Linux, though I do sometimes have issues with my digital camera and I haven't even tried to plug a printer up to it yet. That's why I keep Windows handy to do what Linux can't. XP is fine without the internet, but once you get it connected...well, let's just say I'd rather surf the web on Linux. I'm thinking of dual booting my parents' computer with Linux and Windows. Linux for surfing, Windows for word editing.

It's so easy to protect yourself against viruses. :B Firefox + Avast + basic common sense = a clean computer. :3

I can understand however how someone with little computer experience could have problems. For example, I have a friend who managed to install some kind of virus on her computer because a notification popped up saying "YOU'RE INFECTED DO A VIRUS SCAN NOW!" and she clicked yes, because she didn't recall that her antivirus was actually Norton not "DELUXE FREE ANTIVIRUS." >.> For such cases, a Mac would be perfect, because you're less likely to catch something.

Well, I'm glad that your Mac suits you. That's the thing though, your decision was a well-thought out one. You knew what you needed and since you thought that Mac would fulfill that role you went for it.

The bottom line is, you got a Mac because you wanted something different...and it seems to me like a majority of people get Macs because they want the *same* as everyone else.

I just think it's silly when people get their daddy to shell out an extra $500 because they want to tote around a Macbook like everyone else. >.> Especially if it's not something they really need.

Then again, trendwhoring always results in the buyer getting ripped off...so maybe they're aware of it? o.o I dunno.

I don't know how antivirus companies' statistics look like, but I noticed more troublesome infections during the last year or two.

Well, nowadays, computers are supposed to be very idiot-proofed, lots of people use them even though they know little about them and don't even care to learn.

I am a Mac user, AND I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE PCs!!! I had one for about 5 years (I went through three Dell PC computers throughout that time span), then I recently bought a Mac OS X with Snow Leopard, and man what a difference it makes! I may not be able to have an easier time accessing the programming; however, a Mac takes care of itself. No more scanning, defragmenting, Disc Cleaning, and etc. Plus the screen is 21.6 inches and it is an All-in-one computer that is oh-so-silent. No more towers. A nice clean look. Nice desktop and finder. It is just amazing.

You went through 3 Dell's in 5 years? Man you must be really shitty with computers.

Well usually the only people who say MACs suck are the people who have either used them for 5 seconds or have never used anouther OS other than Windows in their whole life.

Basically cutting things down.

Macs i'd consider as the multimedia god while PCs are generally used more for gaming/servers. Sure they both excel in multimedia but anyone who has actually USED a Mac will probably say the same.

This.

I, personally prefer PC, but if you're into any kind of serious media, then Macs are probably better to go.

I use a PC because I'm a gamer, with a slight end of working with After Effects/photoshop. Nothing real big. So for me, I can build a computer at half the cost of a Mac that works well for gaming.
