Great episode! Gave more necessary insight into the personalities of both Shirou and Rin. Hopefully Shirou gained some positive additions to his reputation from some people after showing that he can fight tactically and isn't spineless. Rin is tsundere and lively as ever with her expressions. The introduction of the purple haired servant was done well, though it seemed much shorter than I'd hoped. The adaptation continues to be very faithful and so far appears to be going one day per episode. Though, I remember feeling much more excited at this point in the visual novel than in the anime, but I'm not sure if that's so much the fact that the story was fresher when I was reading the VN or if this anime wasn't able to carry over certain charms that came with reading in the other medium.

Also,

Damn, Tohsaka was annoying this episode with her tsun tsun qualities. I take it back, Saber > Tohsaka.

Far be it for me to question how forums should be moderated - no matter how fatuous it may seem.

I can't seem to remember; did Mitsuzuri also go missing in the VN? I don't recall if that was the case so I was surprised in this episode.
Yeah she did.

Which leads me to question: I can't remember, does Mitsuzuri ever re-appear?
spoiler the answer, obviously

I don't even keep track of my anime list, but I've watched all of the available episodes so far for this show, and so far it's nothing special. Just because I believe this show isn't the AOTY means I'm trolling. I'll still continue watching, but I'm losing interest in it as each week passes by.

And can you take few secs and write the things you don't like in this show? Cause seeing many of those 'Hated' rankings here on this episode I'm just wondering myself what's the main reason people don't like this.

I don't necessarily hate the show. I still think the show is good, but it's nowhere near as perfect as many claim it to be.

The main protagonist is basically the same type of character that we've seen in a bunch of other anime shows, the slightly naive 16-18 year male, but Emiya is a little bit more tolerable since he's a bit more mature and there's other traits about him, like his courage makes up for it. Rin is starting to become unlikable, especially in this episode after attacking Emiya. The show is starting to drag out a bit, but probably to explain the entire context of the story to viewers who aren't familiar with previous Fate shows.

I also like some things about the show like the gorgeous fight scenes and the servants, but I'll probably end up dropping it, and return to it when it's finished.

I'm reasonably certain its more a response to the whole priest thing and some of their honestly outrageous and inconsiderate behavior like spoiling things for with no regard for people that are just watching the anime because they are seen as "secondaries", policing threads for any dissenting opinion on the show and just having treated the threads like their own personal chat room and members only club until the mods eventually stepped in and said enough is enough.

Maybe things cool down from here as they already seem to be and as the show starts to pick up, but I can only imagine how these threads would look right now were the mods not being more proactive. I think in this shows case a lot of people like the show well enough but just hate the fan culture and fan boying surrounding it cause otherwise there's not much to hate about the show itself that I can see. Not exactly fair, but its kind of like what did some people expect when they decided to act the way they did about the show, pissing people off and probably creating a bit of an anti movement that wouldn't be there otherwise.
Let it go already. If the issue you had has by your own words gotten better then why continue with this anti-priest agenda?

You are looking at this the wrong way if you think most people who hate this show hate the fans and thus give it a 1 because "Look these fans are terrible, then I just can't like the show at all."

If that was true, this would apply to SnK as well since there was pretty much the same amount of hype for it there with tons of eren/misaka/armin avatar posters running around. But nope, its not new, and its nothing big. It's just how it is where people go on their alt accounts and start baiting and trolling the discussion thread.

Obviously you can't see all the bait that was posted here because it was deleted but the point still stands. But now we are going off topic to discussing why the fan base and hate for popular shows are terrible now aren't we?

I can't speak too much for Titan since I wasn't here for that even though I did watch the show but did the shown have a dedicated group of fans going around essentially policing the threads for the first couple of weeks and essentially just crapping on anyone that didn't post only the most glowing opinions about the show. And no I didn't see the posts you are apparently talking about but to me at least it seems like there are certain posters that see any post that is critical of the show or says they find the pace slow or boring as baiting. I mean there's a definite culture here where it feels like you can post low content comments all you want as long as they acknowledge the show as greatness but any post that suggests otherwise pretty much as a rule sees the poster called out to explain themselves and in some cases be subjected to ridicule, not that everyone is taking it that far. My theory is no doubt this has caught the attention of trolls somewhere and theyre gaming the polls a little trying to illicit a response out of the more hardcore posters. Not saying that's what happened, it just wouldn't surprise me.

And this isn't an anti priest thing, in fact some of them are actually being quite reasonable and helpful recently, but to deny that they've become pretty infamous and probably a trolling target as a result I think rubs out a pretty plausible explanation for the apparent deleted baiting posts and thread poll looking like a bell curve instead of the usual top heavy one.

You are generalizing here a lot, the hate towards the whole fan base as it's just on entity, the priests (which most of them just went with the flow later and changed their nick to contain a priest like me), it's your opinion on the matter and you're saying it like it's a fact...

It's you who came to the F/sn threads before you even watched the show and wanted the fans to stop fanboying over the show like it's the best thing ever, before you even watched the first episode itself.
Now you enjoy it a lot yourself and see no reason to hate the show itself, so you got to blame something, if it's not the show, it's the fanbase that ruins the experience of the show.

Stop being so Anti-something and if you enjoy the show, just participate in the discussions about the episode and not why the fanbase is this and that, etc.

^ this is an example of how a dissenting opinion can be expressed without something that tempts me to call bait.

But in any case, F/SN as a whole is a deconstruction of the typical shounen hero. Shirou starts off naive, but you'll find that this anime (following the UBW route obviously) will become quite critical of his naivety and ideals later on. Already, the show has hinted that something is wrong with Shirou and how he isn't quite normal. The typical shounen would just give him a tragic backstory and make him want to do good for the sake of good, but I can assure you that things are different here since they already they've began to question his "selfless do good" mentality.

If the show's being too slow paced, then coming back after the whole show or first cour has aired might be for the best.

You are pretty right that there are people who go and criticize anyone's opinion which doesn't agree with them on why this show is pretty amazing, but this is not something new.

If I were to go right now into ummm... Lets say when SnK was popular and call it a "boring shitty anime that has nothing of value and is being overhyped" (Yes, something similar was said in this discussion thread but was removed) there will be people calling it out on me for it.

Now there are people who don't talk like that and simply say why the show doesn't deserve its rating or its standing and I am pretty fair to those people. And of course there are those who go way overboard in telling them that their opinion is wrong and that they should correct it. But I don't really think that's something special about F/SN 2014 discussion boards, I think that just happens for almost all sorts of products that have vocal fans for them.

In any case, I am not really arguing with you as much as agreeing with what you are saying and telling you that "yeah, but I've seen it happen all the time here and there."

That's why I don't see a reason to keep bringing it up as it is going to continue on for some anime show in the future. Regardless of how you put your argument and how well thought out it is.

All too often, someone expresses an opinion in a tone that's very provocative or offensive (e.g. "boring shitty anime that has nothing of value and is being overhyped"), and then complain that "the fanbase is hostile to those with a different opinion" when naturally the fans call them out on it. Actually, this happens a lot in life in general.

TBH you can fit entirety of plot and every single thing that happened in that thing in 10 words. And most of that you can predict anyway.

With FSN there's a very clear problems that some people do not even REALIZE what is a spoiler(ex: servants, zero stuff, etc) and what is acceptable(episode contents, meta based on episode content). So the possibility of getting spoiled on FSN is A WHOLE LOT MORE BIGGER.

The Rin/Shirou conflict and resolution was poorly done; it's just hard to believe that anyone would act like that.

If Rin had intentionally missed her shots in an attempt to scare him off and everything else stayed the same, that'd make a lot more sense.

To be frank, the logic that during the daytime you are mostly safe in public places is sound from everything we know so far:
- Mages are not supposed to give out their identities or magic stuff and prefer secrecy.
- They have to get rid of witnesses so most likely would be less inclined to do something with multiple possible ones.

Even Rin, a full-fledged trained magus, herself assumes that going to school should be okay because of that.

Its a public place stacked with people - as long as you do not end up in an empty hallway, its safe and its not like Shirou can just stop EVERYTHING in his life on a moment's notice.

TBH I think its obvious Rin KNOWS that. This whole thing is more like trying to make a point to him AND to herself(going by her last scene in previous ep), to prove to Shirou that stuff is serious and to prove to herself that she can do this to him(especially after Archer going all "HAHA why you are cutting him slack"). Level-headed Rin would not have even tried something like this in a public place, obviously, but emotions are emotions.

Nope, in the VN she was actually trying to kill (incapacitate) Shirou, so if it looks like she is pretending just a bit not to hurt him. It's wrong, she is just being 'merciful' and doesn't like killing people unnecessarily.

She was clearly trying to hurt him going by Gandr damage shown.
Its just that Shirou is damn pro at dodging so far(thank you Lancer), which is even shown by Rin's surprised facial expressions after he pretty much dodges most of her first shots.

I mean look:

First shot grazes him, then he moves his body to just barely barely bullet time the next ones based on pure calculation.

Then we have split second dodges like:

Where Shirou is saved by very well timed and calculated two jumps.

Even Rider fight is full of split second dodges and Rider is clearly faster than Rin:

So yeah, Shirou is REALLY good at dodging. Which when we think about it was hinted in prologue already when he casually sidestepped the trackteam's attack.

This episode is the one that would have prompted an insane marathon of the entire series, if it had already finished airing.

Still, I have some complaints:

The "detective" part could have lasted 30 seconds and we wouldn't have lost anything of value.

The blushing and head-tilts. Oh my god, it bothers me so much. Oh my god, fuck Ufotable, fuck moe, fuck tsunderes, fuck anime, fuck everything, FUCK.

Wow. Yeah this is why I still barely take MAL seriously, they don't read what other people actually post. Sorry but this is a really twisted view of what I was even getting at that seems to be putting whether someone enjoys the show and will praise it at the forefront of everything. I even said straight up in my post that all of this was just theory and speculation...like if people would just read the actual post.....

Seriously THANK YOU for actually reading and understanding my post and what I'm theorizing rather than jumping to wild conclusions of us vs. them and fanboys vs. haters. Actually when I was referring to some of the priests being more helpful you were one of the ones I was talking about, having the presence of mind to tell people to stop spoiling things for newer viewers and just generally being a reasonable person.

Yeah it's nothing new, FS/N UBW is just the current example of it where as 2 years ago it would have been Attack on Titan. All I was realistically trying offer was my theory on why there might be some extra hate and backlash all of a sudden, but it's amazing just how much some people have completely and utterly missed the point I was trying to make. It's like they see pure haters around every corner or something when really I just have more than one way at looking at the same issue whereas I swear most people are only capable of looking at things from their own and your either with them 100% or against them 100% in all possible cases.

Oh well, MAL gonna MAL basically lol.

But she is the poster girl Tsundere

How can you hate her for doing what she is best at :-C

Because it's soooooooo obvious. I can hear her screaming "it's not like I wanted to be friends with you, baka!". There was nothing blush-worthy in her shaking Shirou's hand (and in the other 892793 times when she blushed).

Or when she does her little head tilts at the end, it's like she's asking "AM I KAWAII !!?!?!??!?!?".

I even have Kurisu in my favorites, but this is too much.

I still don't see any difference with Deen version

There is no difference They are just playing a DEEN version and lying saying it it different.

So far the story is the exact same. Fights are prettier I guess.

There's already been a difference since episode 1. Either your memory isn't too strong or lack attention to detail.

The Rin/Shirou conflict and resolution was poorly done; it's just hard to believe that anyone would act like that.

If Rin had intentionally missed her shots in an attempt to scare him off and everything else stayed the same, that'd make a lot more sense.

This thing with Gandr is
(not much of spoiler, just explanation what this spell does)

Mod Edit: I've added a couple of other nested spoiler tags here, because while a brief explanation of what Gandr is, is not a spoiler, going on to talk about Rin's intentions is.

Ok, I was reading this board and made an account here only to explain to people WHY this show is so overhyped, because actualy it is.

This show is not subpar, the animation is gorgeous, when you have all the facts it is a great pleasure to see the characters from the VN animated correctly and in-character, but in the end the VN was good because of the whole material of the three routes; only UBW simply won't cut it for it being the best anime serie of the year.
As it is, the show is really above average, but not a crowning moment of awesomeness, at least not yet.

BUT.
It is so so so so much better than the deen version of the Fate route, and so much better than the UBW movie story-wise and so much better than the Tsukihime-anime-serie-that-does-not-exist, that this 2014/2015 UBW is like an oasis in the desert for Type-moon fans.
People simply do not realize how much Fate fans had the short end of the stick for many years as far as animation is concerned, at least until Fate/zero

By the way, in this ep I very much like how Rin's near Oedipus complex is showing.
Don't misunderstand, even if her father had been more of a father and less of a mage she would still have become a magus, magic is the love of this girl's life, but perhaps she would have turned a different kind of mage if she was more a Rin and less a Tosaka.
Perhaps kind of like the "Magic Gunner Rin" from the doujin.
I'm a big softie.

Errr, you should remove that.

Otherwise, nevertheless, that info is kind of wrong.

The only issue is that Ufo didn't show that at all, those shots looked like they could rip a huge hole through Shirou's body.

Yeah, and those holes in the ground wasn't helping either. Gandr should be just curse. Basically.

Rin's Gandr is similar in power to a pistol.

As such, most hits will indeed be non-lethal, but just like a pistol you don't just go "exhausted and unconscious" from being hit. The impact is definitely going to break a rib or two.

And just like Rin said, if it hits a vital spot it can be fatal. i.e. headshot.

You are incorrect. Regular Gandr is indeed just a curse, without even any corporeal form (ergo 0 kinetic impact). However, Rin's Gandr is modified and has corporeal form and impact.

You are assuming Archer is not close by for some reason despite the fact that so far he has always been by her side, even in school, despite it being a well established fact that no one self-respecting would dare to try to reveal themselves to general public in mid day.

I thought it was straight-up stated that Archer was somewhere else that day?

Is it just me or does the Saber act quite differently compared to Fate Zero?
Also, allow me to make a wild guess - all heroes and masters will be conveniently from the school?

Mod Edit: Spoiler removed.

You should probably not mention half of those characters since they are spoilers.

You s hould probably just report the post and NOT quote most of spoilers.
