I watched Fate Stay Night. It was alright but nothing special in my opinion. Then I watched Fate Zero.

Difference was so huge I still don't know how it is possible that Fate Zero is so much better.

Not just in terms of animation, which is much better, but also the story is so much better and serious. Why are these two so much different?

Because the deen anime is a terrible adaption of what was already the weakest and most poorly paced route of the source.

One's an adaptation of a light novel, and the other is an adaptation of a visual novel. They were also produced by different studios.

Because you watched a butchered version of F/SN, as others have said.

Watch the good version airing right now.
And I mean that in the most sexually painful way possible.

I didn't find Fate/Zero all that impressive aside from the production values. The current adaptation of FSN Unlimited Blade Works is much better paced and more engaging than both previous Fate TV adaptations.

Which FSN version you talking about? Ufotable or StudioDeen. StudioDeen version is definitely bad but Ufotable version just started not long ago and it still too early to compare it to Fate Zero.
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

Because different authors and different animation studios if you're talking about F/SN from 2006 VS Fate/Zero.

Well its true that Fate/Zero's very much different from Fate/Stay Night and that its much more serious than FSN. It's no surprise that its so different from one another because both of them has got different authors. FSN has comparatively a lighter atmosphere than Fate/Zero, while Fate/Zero was written by Gen Urobuchi, who is the same author of Psycho pass, phantom requiem, black lagoon etc.
So its pretty much understandable from where the seriousness in this anime come from.

This however...You couldnt be more wrong unless you tried.

But I will let it slide since I just woke up and I am not in the mood to explain how Kinoko Nasu is more cruel and serious(in general) than Gen Urobuchi.

Nasu is a great world-builder but if you think his dialogue is anything other than abysmal you're likely delusional.

As someone above me said, Fate Stay/Night is one of the weaker routes of the game.
And the fact that Fate/Zero was written by Gen Urobuchi and produced by UFOTABLE, who also produced the really amazing Kara no Kyoukai films.
So it had a really good writer and the production value was of the charts compared to Fate Stay/Night.

You do know that Knk wasnt written by Urobuchi but from the writer of FSN right?

Who the writer is had nothing to do with it.Script writers, directors and animation studio do.

Is it really worth your time to fight people who've already made up their minds? Nothing good ever comes out of responding to bait from people who think they know something but they really don't.

I kinda wish more people paid more attention to who is behind what tbh.

Okay I was a little unclear I guess. What I meant was that Both KnK and Fate/Zero was both animated by UFOTABLE. But I know that Urobuchi only wrote Fate/Zero and not KnK. Last but not least, you're right, Kasu Kinoko is the original creator of KnK and Fate Stay/Night.

Different Writer.

FSN has a cast full of teens and F/Z mostly focuses on adults. For me that's been the biggest difference because it makes for a different tone/atmosphere/focus/character chemistry.

I used to think FSN 2006 was the best anime since sliced bread. Now I recognize it as a badly paced train wreck. At the time though, I think it performed its job of introducing me to the visual novel and all of the characters.

I prefer this new version that's airing right now.

Not a fan of Fate Zero. It's also badly paced, feels like it's missing out chunks of content, don't care about a majority of the characters. As a whole, it seemed unnecessary. It had a nice, albeit pointless chibi-Rin cameo and mind blowing visual quality.

Definitely not 'better written', imo. If you throw all of those pretty visuals on the FSN 2006 anime but leave it with the same convoluted train wreck of an ill paced story, they'll come across as rather similar.

One redeeming feature? RIIIIDEEEEERRRR. Who was ultimately just fodder for the antagonist anyway.
