| Aoi Bungaku Series |
| - Grave of the Fireflies (I personally didn't find it tear-jerking, but most people apparently do so it's worth a go) - Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (a disaster anime so plenty of sadness here, particularly the end) - Haibane Renmei (less so in the beginning, but gets progressively darker as it goes on) |
| Texhnolyze, SaiKano, Casshern Sins, and Bokurano. Depressing as hell, and also extremely sad. |

| Clannad AS Full Moon wo sagashite (you definitely gotta watch this :P) And, also seconding Tokyo Magnitude 8.0( the last episode will make you shed tears) Each episode of Jigoku Shoujo also has its own sad and depressing moments. If you dun mind episodic series, I'd suggest you start with it first. |

| Seconding Texhnolyze, Haibane Renmei, Clannad AS (But only if you don't watch the final bunch of episodes), Voices of a Distant Star and End Of Evangelion Also try 5cm per second, Aria the Origination (Only gets a kick after you've watched the other seasons first though, and more melancholic than actually depressing), Cowboy Bebop (Only really gets sad in the end), Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Has a lot of genuinely tragic moments that make most of the other stuff you'll be likely to see look cheesy and dramatized.) and The Sky Crawlers. |

| Gankutsuou has a bunch of really sad scenes, so do Gunslinger Girl (especially later chapters of the manga can get pretty depressing, but both anime seasons are sad as well), and the Soukyuu no Fafner OVA (the TV series is more bittersweet than outright depressing). And seconding Legend of the Galactic Heroes. |
