These past few episodes have had very melancholic endings. This episode really hit me. The pain of holding onto something for so long, maybe even living only because of it, and the difficulty that lies within truly moving on without looking back. "I can't keep going stepping on her." Reminds me of the stories of Orpheus and Lot's wife.

But on another note, I like how Ginko doesn't sugarcoat anything he says and tells it how it is straightforwardly.

Good episode.

That guy was a fool for not moving forward and clinging to the past that is unattainable. I like the symbolism of the bridge.
Armageddon was yesterday, today we have a problem.

dem regrets holding him back
"Urushibara Ruka. The mannerisms and voice of a woman... No... More feminine than any woman. But he's a guy. Taller than Mayuri, but so very thin... But he's a guy. Looks great in a miko outfit... But he's a guy. It's already twilight And yet, it's so hot. The cicadas are crying. But... He's a guy."

No matter how much you hold on to the past, it's already gone. You have no choice but to go forward because looking back might only bring you more sadness.

So the Zen guy will be like that for 20 years later even after his death? That's sick.

Oh and nicely said DaItalianFish.

Sad, sad episode. This episode was like dealing with a loved one in a coma, you cannot let go of that hope that they're still in there. In the end, the inability to let go led Zen to step backwards and return to the village perpetuating that cycle for possibly 20 years.
It is interesting that this series can be interpreted as commenting on things like that. Reminds me of the "drug addiction" episode.

Sad and tragic episode. I was hoping she would be alive but Mushishi is always sort of "realistic" with it's outcomes like she died on that night because of the fatal fall. Poor guy, he's now a living corpse.

maybe I'm dumb but it doesn't seem like Ginko often offers people an escape from their current situations, so I was fooled for a moment to believe that Zen would leave with him. On another note, I think if I lived in a simpler time I too would prefer a life on the road rather than being settled down in one place. For Ginko, life and its many forms and bounties can not be discovered in just your corner of the world.

kinda got lost in this episode. hana and zen crossed the one night bridge, but zen said the last time the bridge appeared was 60 years ago when his grandpa was born. also, the next time the bridge will appear will be in 20 years, but last time it took only 3 (since hana's death to current time).

someone explain the bridge to me please.

Feels are real in this episode. I didn't expect Zen to die too. The idea of him being a living corpse for 20 years seems even more depressing than him having actually died.

And I dunno why exactly, but the final words to each episode always make the scenario seem so much more devastating. ;__;

Also, I second the comment about all the characters looking too similar. It didn't bother me at first, but it's really starting to. I get it'd be hard to make so many secondary characters all look unique (a new set every episode), but more effort could've been put into SOME variation, at least. Probably the only flaw I can actually of in the series thus far.

I liked this episode. It seemed to me as though he didn't want to start a new life and wanted to go back so that he could be with Hana.

I have to admit, by about episode 11, 12 and 13 I have noticed all of the characters are drawn similarly LoL.

By the way, did anyone manage to catch what it says at the ending? I only managed to see it in kanji form. But, there seems to be a block of text after the credits. So does that mean this episode was dedicated to someone? I would like to know about this, otherwise it will bug me if I don't find out what the text says at the end!!

One of the better episodes of Mushishi, very very powerful.

I kinda knew that guy wouldn't move on but it was still heart breaking to see him fell down the bridge after all Ginko's effort to stop him.

What a tragic, creepy and sad episode.

I honestly wonder how everyone thought she was still alive. To me it was quite obvious that she was a zombie. I mean, no one would survive that fall and her eyes were empty.

So many characters looking the same is kind of bothering me too. Maybe it sounds silly, but perhaps so many people looking the same is from Ginko's perspective of meeting so many people in his travels that some people just start to look like everyone else, like they don't really stand out in his memory, or maybe they remind him of people he met before.

This episode reminds me a lot of episode 8. The one where the man lost his wife out at sea, in the fog, and spends 3 years waiting for some sign of her to show up on shore.

Both those episodes were about moving on from the past... And in both cases the men failed. Shiro had to be forcibly ripped away by Ginko. But for Zen, the decision to go back, return to the past in a sense, was fatal... and Ginko couldn't save him. (what would Zen return to anyway? A life without Hana. A life of ostracism.)

Hana is the same way. She couldn't take the chance of a different future than the one laid out for her. She didn't want to be selfish, when everyone around her was being selfish. (I mean seriously, think of your daughter's well-being... Not just social 'obligations.') Turning back was fatal for her too...

I can get why both characters wished to go back. Leaving your past behind is hard. A future of uncertainties can be daunting and scary.

Too bad he didn't. And that it all happened because of family issues. :~

Does every episode have to be depressing? Every episode is the same thing. Ginko tries to help someone, The person doesn't listen to ginko, the person dies. It's getting really boring.

I'm thinking it's a mis-translation. Maybe it's that the bridge appeared 20 years ago and since his grandpa is turning 60, then it should appear this year as well.

To those wondering why they can't go backward but the bridge support them when they go forward, I think it's because it's not a bridge. It's a swarm of mushi heading in one direction.

It's like, if you step forward, they have no choice but to take your weight since they need to go forward but if you step back the ones you step on will go forward and the ones at the back will stop until your dirty foot is gone.

Yeah, I'm sad for Hana. The guy just wanted to f***, can't be helped. xD

It was obvious this episode wasn't going to have a happy ending since there's so way she would've survived a fall that high. Had she just gone with him instead of trying to please her pos of a family this wouldn't have turned out to be such a tragic tale : /

I knew Hana would be dead. It'd be even worse if the mushi left and she was still alive because the family would just pick right up where they left off and have her marry the dude ASAP >.>

So since Zen fell off the bridge, I guess the mushi just went back to the previous side of the valley taking Ginko back too, right? :/ that would suck for Ginko. Stupid Zen. Now it's gonna take 20 years until he officially dies too =____='

They both kind of died Lot's wife style. This episode was also a bit similar to Romeo and Juliet.

DaItalianFish said:
The family only cared about their standing (the mother only wanted Hana to return to normal so she could marry the chief's son or w/e) and Zen only cared about his personal desire of Hana. Neither cared about Hana herself.

Ouch. Yeah, I guess that's an even darker interpretation than what I had in mind. I'll go a step further and argue that, in addition to the causes you mentioned, Hana's undoing was also her indecisiveness. If she had only made up her mind before stepping on the bridge, she would have either lived on in the village or could have been on her merry way with Zen.
