Sometimes I say bad-ass female leads but then I get Revy-like recommendations (which is okay); but I'm looking more for stories where the woman MC is not a damsel in distress like in most anime (at least it seems).

Think Saber from Fate or Ryuko from KLK.

Any recommendations?

EDIT: I should clear up that I'm looking more for characters who are tough and strong in their personality and determination than just their muscles. The action girl has quite a lot of these, but there are characters that are tough without being physical fighter. A good example I can think of is Ayumu from the manga LIFE; who was very strong mentally and had a determined personality; yet she wasn't an assassin or a mecha pilot.

if action girls are your thing, tvtropes got you covered

also if it really seems to you that in most anime 'the woman MC' is a damsel in distress, you are clearly watching the wrong stuff

Balsa in Seirei no Moribito sports some well-developed biceps, but her real strengths are intelligence and courage.
