If this thread already exists let me know, and I'll close this. I'm new and have not got into this community much.

So, before you found MAL, how did you keep track of the shows you watched?

I still use my old method even though most of my stuff is on this site. Just an old habit I guess. :P

I used notepad, my anime list was okay but my manga list was too much. A friend recommended mal and here I am.

This. In fact, I actually enjoyed anime as a whole more before I started keeping track of it on MAL.
You've come a long way, baby.

I didn't. I wrote down the manga series I liked in a notebook at some point though, and this list has been very useful to me since then. Once I tried to create a list on baka-updates, but I was too lazy for it.

I didn't. I actually never thought about keeping track of the Anime's I watched until I came across this site. That Is why some Animes on my list don't have a specific date for when I started/finished. I had to guess the year for the Anime when I added the series to my list.

Animenewsnetwork.com, Anime-Planet.com, and AniDB.net. Also .txt files and a spreadsheet before I found those sites, though I no longer update the spreadsheet. Prior to mid-2005 or so, my anime-watching was pretty much limited to what I bought on DVD or borrowed from friends, so it wasn't hard to keep track of without specialized databases.

Like others said, I would only watch one series at a time when I was younger, haha. Remembering where I was when it came to longer 30+ episode anime was always a pain and I would either write it down on a piece of paper or just try to remember.

I started really watching more anime again (after like 6-7 years of just watching a series every few months) and I had no idea how to keep track and a lot of people on twitter suggested this site~

I *think* there was a site similar to this when I was younger? I tried using that but never remembered

I didn't, and now i'm having problems figuring out what I watched and what episode I was on. That's why I'm glad I found this place, but problem is I don't enjoy anime like I used to when I first got into it. Haruhi Suzumiya and Naruto is what sparked my interest in anime, but I've watched so many boring shows compared to them that I can't find a good anime anymore.

Are you kidding me?

I've watched probably about 50% more anime than the ones I have on MAL - and I keep adding them because over time I've... forgotten the titles.

Before I knew MAL existed, I never recorded the shows I'd already watched, I just wrote down a list of shows I wanted to watch on a blank piece of paper. I had around 20 shows on that paper before making a MAL.

before finding this site, i didn't even know what anime was. I only watched Naruto and then a friend of mine showed me this list of cartoons called "anime" on MAL. So i only was watching Naruto thanks to cartoon network.

That and the only anime I watched were anime series that was on the front page of anime streaming sites like anilinkz, its how I ended up watching a lot of ecchi stuff before I found MAL.

Before joining this site, the only anime I watched was Death Note and Elfen Lied so I didn't really need to keep track. I was a very undisciplined anime watcher. I took like four months to finish Elfen Lied, mostly because I watched one episode in one day and I would remember about it just in the next week.

Now I watch anime way more often -- like everyday -- and I don't know if I should be happy about this.

Well, back then when I started to watch anime on a seasonal basis, I never felt the urge to sign up on MAL since I could just use a Word document or a Excel sheet to catalog everything I watched. It was pretty handy as you could tailor it fairly easy to your own needs. The lists here are a bit difficult to customize, unless you know how to use the CSS editor (which I don't :P).

I don't really think I did besides just going "oh yeah I've seen that" if I came across something I'd already seen. The total number of series I'd probably seen back then was maybe a hundred if that so it wasn't really hard.

I used Access, then ANN, and when it started to not have titles I'd seen I looked for other places to supplement it, like here and Anime Planet.
